This is not meant to be an attack, but what specifically did you see that led you to feel that way?
A few things stood out to me. His ability to identify the defencies in the team very early in the season... and voice them to the rest of management. It seemed to me, the management team had a very good open setting where each of them could share comments and thoughts, not without pushback, but knowing they would be heard allows for a very productive work environment.
Based on the defencies he identified, he voiced those with the players (in a group and individually as required) and tried to emphasize the importance of adjusting and playing a certain way to achieve ultimate success. They never got there, but were damn close imo.
He is in no way a push over. He will challenge each of his players in the way he sees necessary, rather than a one size fits all. That being said, he is a no bullshit coach and that doesn't work for all players, especially players who are not honest with themselves (see Vesey). But those who are honest with themselves, are always able to receive comments/input/criticisems from others.
He has the respect of his team... that speach in the game 6 OT intermission, and the way the team responded with their play gave me chills... they heard it, they felt it and they exectuted... minus the actual goal. They were done in by idiocy twice. The fact the players played the way they did after that passioante speach was telling to me on where he stands with his players. There is respect (or is it respec) there. The way they played in Game 7 speaks to the mental fragility of the collective leadership group there. Coach MacLean shared what everyone knew vocally in one of the later episodes, to me that performance is not on the coaches.
Everything he identified as a probem early in the season, in the end, played a factor in the playoffs. Tells me he knows what he is talking about, has ideas on how to make adjustments to mitigate and is willing to continuously adjust. More adjustment is needed, a la the over-posession we see at times.
And I guess just in general, he seemed to have a real feel for what each player needed at certain times througout the season.
Does he make in game mis-steps? Yup... I am not aware of a coach that doesn't. Shit happens fast in the NHL and sometimes you get caught up in your own head... but it was not prevelent and in no way lead the team to lose that series.
Just to wrap that up, I am a fan of the Leafs and anyone on the team at any given time. I don't give two f***s about any coach or player in general... but as long they are wearing blue and white I am their biggest fan and try to support them in a positive way... with absolute freak out sessions thrown here and there ;-)
