Fast is sooffffftt, gets intimidated after taking a few hits.

Miller is the guy that will bring that grit, hunger and do what it takes to win attitude.

FWIW, i think both will be on the roster next year.

Hags-JTM-Fast

could be our 3rd line next year. i think Fast could make up what we lose with Cally defensively and I hope that JTM can become dubi like. JTM definitely has some turnover and defense problems right now though.

Nash-Stepan-MSL
Kreider-Brassard-Zucc
Hags-JTM-Fast
Carcillo-Boyle/Moore/OL-Carcillo/one of the 4Cs

thats a solid lineup, although I'm putting a lot of faith in that inexperienced 3rd line.

It's a shame because if Pouliot was just a little bit better in his own zone he'd be a perfect fit. Big, fast, crashes the net, playing a more straightforward game than I expected - we don't have much of that. I'm sure Fast is more responsible defensively though, he has to be.

Great post. Exactly the way I looked at it when the rumors started. The Ranges team GPG goes up by .5 from now till the end of next year. Take into consideration. Hank's GAA (which is back to normal after the bad start), and Talbots excellent play. The Rangers should get more wins over the course of a few months.

Let's not forget that this team was 10-10 in the 2012 playoffs with a goalie that sported a sub 2.00 GAA. That .5 bump in GPG that season would have equaled shorter series and a possibly a cup.

If the Rangers don't face Boston, or a physical team in the playoffs this year (provided they make it of course), then the odds are very likely that they can make a run to the finals. The Rangers system simple don't match up against Boston. Just not big or tough enough. Thankfully the other teams that play that heavy brand of hockey are all out west.

If I recall correctly, the rangers have won just a single game this year against those "Neanderthal" teams. STL, BOS, LA, PHX, SJ, ANA.

Thanks for the compliment.

I wonder to what extent this move has impacted / will impact our decision to buy out Richie.

I like Pouliot, just would rather give our guys the shot instead of a guy whos been a career long enigma. that said he deflects everything he sees into the net, its been a while since we had a guy just park himself there.

I loved callahans game but I'm sorry we just got an all star first line Stanley cup / gold medal winning winger for Callahan and 2 picks. I'll miss callahans grit and leadership but MSL is much better offensively.

Your welcome, very well thought out. My gut tells me Richards is back... and it has less to do with MSL and more to do with how Richards fits in NY... Richie will sign with the Islanders if bought out.

Most likely playing left wing going forward. Less skating on the wing, less defensive responsibility. Richie is a very nice guy and well liked, Dolan won't want to lose a name to Brooklyn... especially one that fits into the NY social fabric like Richards.

That's how I feel. Typical Sather move. And in all likelihood the end result will be what it typically has for the Rangers and their fans - yet another year with no cup.

And potentially no 1st rounders in 3/4 years.

Love the player; do not love the trade.

Good deal.

I'd rather keep a 1st like Miller that is close to NHL ready than a 1st who is over a year from being drafted, and probably a few more years from being NHL ready.

I disagree. The alternative tomorrow was paying Cally $6M for 6 years. That messes up the team exponentially more than a lost pick.

The third alternative was get get back picks and prospects for the future like the smart teams do with pending UFAs. We somehow managed to lose picks at a time when we were supposed to cash in on this deal. Last time we dumped a salary player for a prospect we got McDonough.

for today, its a great deal, for tomorrow its a horrendous deal.

it basically becomes a loss if we dont with the cup within a few years, its a win if we do.

tough to go all in on a 38 year old.

For the most part I agree, but not signing Cally to a horrendous deal into 2020 and potentially having St. Louis off the books in 2015 might be worth a pick in itself. If the Rangers make the right decision with Richards theyll be able to get a little creative.

If Cally resigns with TB (long shot, but the FL tax situation helps) then the deal looks a hell of a lot better. But im not banking on that.

Which is exactly what's been holding back this franchise. Dumb decisions like this. Richards must go after this year.

Vanek just returned Collberg and a 2nd. Callahan was not going to bring us back something all that valuable.

Theres a decent chance that pick/prospect becomes nothing much of value. Theres a decent chance that pick/prospect is just another solid middle of the lineup guy we are already filled with. And we are sitting here still mediocre, still loaded with 3rd liners and tweeners.

The Rangers were NOT going to resign Callahan, who was in the last year of his contract. They also get the 2nd back if the Lightning resign Cally, which seems likely. So it boils down to a first rounder for at least a couple years of the reigning scoring champion, who can also mentor our young guns like Stepan, Kreider, Brassard, Zuccarello, and Miller. HUGE win for the Rangers.

Great move, MSL will play 3 or 4 more years at a high level, draft picks are over rated and free agents can be had with a proven NHL track record. You'd have to be crazy to compare MSL to Cally, sure Cally was a great locker room guy, but the games are not played in the locker, they are played on ice and that's where MSL will shine.

MSL is a legit top line player. We added a true star (like we did with Nash), but we did not gut our depth (like we did with Nash). I think adding a legit 1st liner without slaughtering our offensive depth is a great move. MSL can draw some top dpair away from Nash which could help him. I like the way our team looks right now, as long as out defense wakes up and returns to what they were before the break.

We are still mediocre with MSL...

MSL>>>>>>>Cally

This is a huge upgrade. The only reason people would hate this trade is because of the picks that likely won't help anytime in Hanks prime.

Despite MSL being better than Callahan (Which i certainly agree with) we still have big holes in our lineup and MSL is not enough to push this team to the SCF and legitimately compete with a team like the Hawks or Kings, or even the Blues.

It is doubtful we can even GET to the SCF.

That's not how you look at it, the team is better, smaller long term commitment to player salary and better foundation to build on for 2015. Watch tonight and see even without a practice how much faster the Rangers look. PP should be awesome too.

I love that we got St. Louis, but the price was too steep imo

This is exactly how I feel. Very excited to have St. Louis on this team for at least this year and next (and hopefully beyond that). I don't like giving up the picks.

don't worry about all the teams in the west. if we make it to the SCF we only need to beat 1 of them.

worry about Bawstun and Crosburgh. Those are 2 teams we'll probably have to beat (both of them) to make it outta the East.

are we better than them? hard to say. Probably not barring Lundqvist going into God-mode.
