I fail to see any correlation. I don't recall Messier spouting off about being closer to family and his kids playing hockey. Or Messier having hurt feelings because his GM didn't immediately put him on the Olympic team.

Yeah, Messier's was all about money. That is much more acceptable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't a major reason the Oilers traded Messier was due to cost cutting?

Was that around the time the Edmonton Glen Sather said something like he would win the Cup every year if he had the Rangers payroll?

So we're going from acquiring a 38 year old St. Louis, at the deadline, to trading for a 30 year old Mark Messier in the offseason 20 years ago, to handing outrageous contracts to free agents post 2006? Alright I'm done here. Carry on.

Edit: Please try to keep the discussion St. Louis.

You can be sure if Messier was left off an Olympic team by his GM he would ask for a trade. He's a sensitive lad.

But I'm not sure that's indicative of mental fragility. And if it is, whose brain was he using for the last 5 years when he led the league in scoring.

Season's not over yet. If he scores one big goal in the playoffs on the way to a 'Cup it's more than worth the price. Let's wait to crucify him.

I'm sorry, 'one big goal in the playoffs' is not worth a first and second round draft pick.

Are you suggesting that none of these moves are related, and that each should be judged individually?

Is the team losing or winning NOW? They're winning. Why are you so incensed?
Because of the assets that were thrown away. I thought this was covered.
Okay so if the Rangers win the 'Cup and MSL scores no goals and a paltry number of assists in the process, will you still be in this thread complaining?
The sole way for this trade to be success is if it nets the Cup. However, if MSL does that, then yes, I will still complain.

Holik, Kasparaitis, Gomez and Redden gave the Rangers exactly what they should have expected. Bure and Lindros were hampered by injuries.

And then there's Kamensky, which I think is a pretty unfavorable comparison to St. Louis.
Ok, but my point is that I remember being on these boards when there were cries to let those players adjust to being on the Rangers.

Previous free agent signings are very relevant because they prove that all moves the Rangers make are bad. Since the Rangers traded for St. Louis, it is a bad move.

I wouldn't trade a roster player, a 1st and a 2nd for Messier at 38, because he wasn't among the top players in the league at 38. St. Louis is.

So why did he do it? Because of the Olympics snub?

Is that why he asked for a trade to the Rangers in 2009?

Im confused by that whole thing, to be honest.

If he wanted to come back to the Rangers so bad in 2009, why did he re-sign with Tampa in 2011, only to demand a trade a couple years later?

More importantly, he got exactly what he wanted (and had little right to demand), but theres been almost zero production after 11 games. Must be a tough adjustment.

Or it's a really small sample? I dunno....

I am actually a little flabbergasted at how this discussion is now seeking to correlate St. Louis to Messier.

It isn't. I can see how a simple person might see it that way, but it's strictly comparing how Messier came to New York compared to St. Louis, after someone suggested it made St. Louis mentally weak.

I don't know.

It could have to do with the fact that the Lightning were a mess with the Melrose/Tocchet fiasco.

It could have to do with the fact the Lightning had missed the playoffs the previous season weren't going to make the playoffs that season.

It could have to do with the fact he was familiar with John Tortorella who the Rangers had just hired.
