"Saying he was "3rd pair" is being pretty disingenuous"

Quoted for truth.

That is 100% my entire point.

Miller is actually being used as the 3rd pair/3RHD this season. If you compare the two, Severson last season and Miller this season, they are not remotely close to the same.

.

So this is Lake Wobegon where only 7D are 3rd pair defensemen because Miller is a 7D.

Wait, are you really saying Miller is our 7th D-man?
Smith gets used more because of his PK role. If you aren’t needed for special teams it’s easier to get scratched.

But yeah, I guess he passed Smith in 5v5 usage.

Let me re-phrase this. I don’t care.

Severson obviously had a bigger role on the team last year than Miller or Smith does this year. Severson also had been on the team for 9 years and played on our 1st pair in previous seasons.

He’s obviously better. He played more when Marino or others were injured last season, he was great depth. He was mostly excellent in the playoffs and most of our defensemen weren’t.

There’s only so many ways I can say Siegenthaler/Hamilton and Graves/Marino were clearly our top two pairs last season and Severson wasn’t on either of them. It’s not complicated.

Miller has been our #3 RHD

1. Was Hamilton
1. Has become Nemec but the difference between Nemec and Marino's time is hardly different... regardless Nemec and Marino are #1 and #2 RHD

#3 is really Miller - sometimes Smith. But ATOI it's clearly Miller. Smith continues to be forced into the lineup purely for his PK. Miller hasn't been a preferred PKer by this staff. And after Marino we don't really have a decent RHD PK option. Nemec has been getting a bit of PK time but not much...but Miller is averaging 3 minutes more than Smith at ES.

But really all of this conversation began with notion that Severson was just a 3rd pairing guy...and the guy who started this iteration even made the claim one time that Miller easily replaced Severson. That was well before the season was lost of course.

By common terminology usage maybe. More a technicality then actuality.

But end of the day he basically played as much as everyone in the "top 5" outside of Hamilton and Marino, and the difference between he and Marino wasn't all that much.

I regret jumping backing in this mess because in the end if it’s important for some people to define top 4 defensemen differently than I do than knock yourself out.

To me there isn’t a “top 5”, just a top 4, particularly when you have two well defined top lines like last season.

The difference in competition between Severson and Marino was huge, so I see big difference there. And Graves was his partner. Plus that pairing dominated the PK minutes.

For me, Siegenthaler was in the Top 4 because he played with Hamilton. That pair had the 8th most 5v5 minutes together in the NHL last year, one of the 8 with 1,000 minutes together.

And I apologize to the chicken who I had promised to leave alone. I swear I will now.

The conversation was about Lindy Ruff getting fired until this derailed it.

We can get back to Lindy Ruff getting fired now, pretty sure we discussed Damon Severson enough.

I still don't see how in the world Ruff survives the upcoming stretch. Including the Ducks' game, very possible they go 1-6 or something over 7 games. Some of these games could be real beatings too.

Fitz better start dressing up as a clown at that point if Lindy is still here.

Today was another classic in “Ruff has chosen a goalie to save him and he will drive him into the ground until he can’t stop the puck”

Thank goodness the Devils brought Ruff back, then didn’t fire him 30 games ago, nor 20 games ago, nor 10 games ago.

I disagree.

But I definitely think we are there now.
Meh. Like I even said at the time, would folks feel differently if Schmid doesn't play out of his ass and the Devs get murdered by the Rags in 4 or 5?

I still think so. Team looked like an AHL squad in HALF of their playoff games. Warning signs were there.

That said, I understand being stuck and afraid to make a gutsy decision after that season. Which is why I said before the season start, they better have the balls to kick Lindy to the curb early if things don't look great. Yet here we are....

PP killed us early vs Rag's, then we looked really good late in that series.

Canes was, in part, a veteran team that jumped us as we came off a big emotional series.

Firing Ruff off that season only makes sense in hindsight after this year.

To each their own but it was clear as day they were winning games in spite of Ruff. They were losing every game and playing catch-up then too. Difference is they pulled it off.
But they dominated the on ice numbers.

(not saying it sarcastically this time).

Real time forecast for Ruff's firing, brought to you by meteorologist Bleedred

Chances Lindy is fired before next game: 33%.

Chances Ruff is fired by the end of this home stand in a week: 50%.

Chances Ruff is fired before the start of next season: 100%.
I'll go with 100% tomorrow

It could very well be 100% tomorrow. I may be underrating this a bit.

I mean, I've said about 8 times this year that ''This is the kind of game that gets a coach fired''. Except I've never really believed Ruff was in any danger of being fired before this season ended.

Until last weekend. And this is really the first ''This is the kind of game that gets a coach fired'' game since then.

So I could be underrating it. They may not want him to take the heat Tuesday.

Hynes didn't coach a home game again after the first ''Fire Hynes!'' chants that audibly came through the TV. I think he had one more game after that and it was the Buffalo massacre. They wouldn't even let him coach the home game the very next night.

Fire Lindy was what we heard last home game.

I don't think the fire Lindy chant is necessary. I think he's getting fired or gonna be allowed to ''Resign'' after this year, whether people chant it again or not. Even if people chant ''BRING BACK LINDY!'' I don't think he's coming back.

Yea I mean last week I thought there was a chance, but also not shocked they gave him one last ride on the road trip to figure it out. He's a goner tomorrow.

....or this team has extremely serious front office issues.
