And if we don't win this year, the best course of action at the trade deadline next year is probably to trade our first and second round draft picks in 2016 to San Jose for Joe Thornton.

WIN NOW

I don't know what Joe Thorton or 2016 has to do with anything.

The MSL trade is over. The picks are gone.

MSL has become a leader on this team and The Rangers are in it.

WIN NOW. The future is NOW.

A trade of draft picks for Joe Thornton has everything to do with this discussion. If we don't win this year, we'll obviously be in WIN NOW mode again next year.

Bringing Thornton in at next year's deadline would follow your WIN NOW policy.

The wolves haven't had a loss to feast on for a while, so it's all the sudden, "Hey, remember the McIlrath pick?"

pretty much

I'd rather not focus on the negatives...

"WIN TONIGHT PLS"

Gotcha.

Not sure ifbThorton is the guy.

Also not sure we can't win THIS year.

I'm not sure Thornton is the guy either, but I also wasn't sure about Clowe or St Louis, but my opinion didn't matter...and yours won't matter either! Good possibility Thornton will be available at the trade deadline next year, which means he fits the criteria of Sather's team-building formula.

I do agree it's not completely unfathomable we can win this year.

Hey, let's remember who started the 'positive' thread after game three, which nobody even RESPONDED to for like 24 hours!

I wasn't kidding, I was really feeling pretty good about the team after game three, and apparently I was the only one. Game four...not so much!

I didn't realize that was you. I ignored that that because I figured it would be taken over by negativity.

Game 4 was gross. I wonder if that was just a dud game or if that was the peak of the imbalance in the schedules.

So is the idea that Sather is so bad that even if we win a cup he should still be fired.

He should have been fired but if we win the cup than looking a the past 5 years it would be fact that he figured it out, got the right combo of players and contributed to staving off another 54 year nightmare. Arguably...to your point...with a better GM we would have already won another one...of course THAT'S subjective too and may be incorrect. You're defending subjective arguments by pointing out the counter is subjective.

Actually I was just saying his point was subjective, which it is. Before that, I was making a point about Sather's pick trading tendencies. I never said anything about whether or not he should be fired if he wins a cup.

My hope is that if he won the cup he'd finally retire and let someone else take over.

This thread was disregarded for a long time. Then someone decided to wipe the dust off and off it went. Pretty sure that is more than a function of just the MCIlrath pick.

Interesting to consider the mindset of the two organizations heading into this game.

Definitely get the feeling if Pittsburgh loses tonight, Penguin fans will be extremely upset, and there is a good chance heads will roll - Bylsma for sure, probably Shero too, and quite possibly some significant changes in personnel as well.

Here, if the Rangers lose, fans will definitely not be happy, but nowhere near the level of despair Penguin fans will fall to if they lose. After a day or two we'll be patting ourselves on the back for making it as far as we did.

Not sure why that is - partly because AV is in his first year, of course, and partly because it was 3-1 and now it's 3-3, but I think on an organizational level it runs much deeper than that.

its pretty simple.

The Pens are a great team with 2 of the best players in hockey. We're talking about a 1 game playoff, on the road...with the Pens getting last change & we all know how the refs are pro pitt/montreal so its no surprise if we get shafted with some horrible calls.

id say we are definitely not a favored team tonight, but a win wouldnt surprise me either. Rangers are a good team. THey are one of the final 4 teams in teh East...isnt that exactly what everyone expected going into this season? if they win, Final 2, not many woulda figured that.

My issue here though is that there arent many fixing options available out there. Nothing really solves issues, and you know the rangers are going to buyout Richards, which adds a hole, doesnt plug one. We could be worse next season than we are right now. not a good thing.

Any team could say this at any time of any year. And what's on paper means little.

true, and a fair assessment. but im looking at it in terms of whats actually available next year (that we know).

terrible free agent market.

lots of impending key UFA and RFAs

Very tight cap situation

Brad Richards decision

only a Few prospects in the pipeline who may or may not be ready.

The situation isnt bleak, because the main core of the group is signed...but some key guys, basically our entire top line in terms of production, have question marks around them heading into next year.

will be a very scary offseason for us no matter what.

Because as an organization, it has mediocrity has become acceptable and organizational excuses are commonplace. Which is why you see some people hailing simply making it to the ECF as the end all.
