A gimmick coach you refused adjust his left wing lock after it got figured out. Most boring style of play ever. I loved when the Philly D refused to move from the back of their net when Boucher coached Tampa.
I remember that Philly - Tampa game. Boucher had his foibles for sure but did deserve some credit for getting that roster to the playoffs and as far as they went. He insisted on solid defensive play. We could use some that "insistence" now. But not Boucher. :)

The teams sole goal is winning but as a fan I want to be entertained.
To me, entertaining hockey means a lot of offence and goal scoring but not necessarily winning.

I like the fire wagon speedy hockey because it is entertaining, rather than the boring neutral zone lock-down that some teams play. I like to win too.

It was hard being a trap team, we were constantly insulted for being boring, and it was really hard to argue it. Endless 1-0 games…. Uhg… Jacque ran too tight a ship, could be good as an assistant coach though.

I think a coach needs to develop a different strategy for each of his lines. Some lines have players with great skating skills which would allow for a more "fire-wagon" type of attack. Other lines would have big physical players who are slower but who might have some offensive skills too. Then there could be the 4th line grinders with minimal offensive skills who might only be effective (meaning GF=GA) if they play a solid defence first style. I would prefer a coach that could get the best from all types of lines.

Top 5 team in goals scored a bunch of times under Martin. Every interview he does and somebody brings up the "boring hockey" in Ottawa when he coached, he reminds them of that. The boring theme was pushed by the media. Great assistant! Won 2 cups in Pittsburgh with a...less than exceptional defwnce core.

Can’t say that I agree with you much at all.

We were a boring team to watch, so was NJ by the way when they were winning and challenging for cups. They had no fans…

Jacque coached an oppressive and boring style that had us push on the counterattack but otherwise play trap hockey to force turnovers. It was effective, especially given the talent of our squads, but it was boring and stifling, and we sucked over and over again in the playoffs because we could never find that extra gear to score when the pressure was on.

Murray got a lot more excitement out of the roster, it’s a shame he didn’t coach longer, and it’s a shame that Muckler couldn’t add to the roster in a meaningful way.

I would like to see an approach that is attack and possession oriented, but with a bit of Jacque when we don’t have the puck, he se the oversimplified ‘Jacque as an assistant coach’.

Good chats :)

Those are stats, during pretty much the entirety of the dead puck era, so not a great period to brag about scoring, where we played a really boring trap style.

Good thing we had high quality players though, but imagine what games would look like if we let our guys attack!

Anyways man, if you enjoyed that style, good on you, I don’t want to try and take that away from you.

I found it boring, it was billed as boring, and we were constantly derided for being boring. It was effective though so we were a perennial playoff team which was great.

Merry Christmas!

Winning is all that matters when playing any game and I can't really cope with people/teammates who don't have the same agenda.
We are fans, and sports is entertainment. We have one champion per year out of 32 teams now.

Personally I want to be entertained over the course of a season more than I want to be bored to tears watching a team trap. I don’t mind a boring game here and there, but a season worth of boring games can lead to watching highlights instead of games, and opting not to bother buying tickets to regular season games.

There is a massive difference between players and teammates who are playing a game, vs fans watching a game though.

Anyways, I’m sorry if I’m someone who you don’t want to cope with :)

The fact that we could score that much consistantly during the dead cap era is impressive. Imagine that offense and defence in todays league...with no clutching and grabbing. It would be the hockey that you want.

Happy Easter.

I absolutely agree with you. We had the players to be epic offensively, while responsible defensively. It’s kinda what I’m saying with mentioning Jacque as D coach.

It’s a shame we never got to see it, but maybe this team will get there :)

The trap was effective, but thankfully it has died out.

I mean I was just being ridiculous with cope but it does drive me insane when teammates just f*** around without any gameplan. Like I was thinking in sports and even video games. I hate when people treat BRs as a death match snd just go for kills whether they win or lose.

But even as a sports fan I am invested when we are in the hunt. That's the bottom line. The type of hockey we are playing doesn't matter if we can get to the playoffs.

But I never found the Boucher or Martin hockey boring either. Maybe it's boring for our opponents when they lose and our defense is solid. But yeah, boring hockey is just another boring cliche that got overused. It never was boring to me during those times. I am bored now than ever.

Interesting discussion folks.

IMHO:
Low event - low winning < high event - low winning < low event high winning < high event - high winning

In essence, wins being equal, I’d much rather watch a DJ coached team than a Boucher coached team.

That said, I’d rather watch a “boring” style that leads us to the conference final than an exciting style that leads us to a lottery pick.

I agree, but then I got bored of watching boring wins since we always made the playoffs and lost to the leafs.

It’s complicated, and I appreciate different opinions on the subject :)

7 points? Giroux, Talbot and Debrincat are 7 points? What is that 15m in Cap space? What?
Do you expect a team, just now emerging from a complete to the studs, tear down, rebuild and just beginning to show signs of climbing out of the basement to be spending right to the Cap?

Not at all. That for 15m dollars we would be more than 7 points better than last year. Lol

Maybe, but there’s also a way that you should treat people, and players. Especially ones that have battled and bled for the team for 1000 games, while the coach just showed up.

Neiler talked more about how he was treated, and the lack of communication more than the actual benching. Like a lot of things, this type of behaviour is often what separates people.

The talk at the time was that Boucher lost the room I think, and I don’t think players like playing his boring ass system. I know I didn’t like watching it. Jacque had is playing a pretty boring trap system as well. It was effective, but painful to watch as a fan.
Jacques also had some of the highest scoring teams in the league, for a bit.

Yup for sure, and we mentioned that. It was the dead puck era of course, so nothing like goal scoring today unfortunately.

It would have been neat to see our guys fly out there.

Anyways, very effective, but I like the new style we see where teams play possession hockey. Good teams look really good doing it. That’s not us yet, but I’m hoping we get there.

I remember Glen Healy doing colour for Sens games complaining about our pk trap, pp trap, trapping during the timout, leaving the stadium in trap formation. It just seemed like whining to me over a successful system that was frustrating him. It never bored me. I was on the edge of my seat every game hoping for a win and then being elated if we did. Style points? Never really thought of it. But i do remember those great Oiler Dallas games where they just seemed to open it up and they were fun to watch. But when its my team, im more interested in winning i guess.
