Johnny Hockey is from Phili... Columbus is close, not that close. If Mrs. Gaudreau wants to see her family, or his family want to see him. It is on an airplane.

okay a 40 minute, versus a 4 hour. I get you. Canada/USA, I get you. He left ~ 16 million on the table...for a 4 hour flight, viruses 40 minute flight. So Mom and Dad visit him 2-3 times per hockey season. They stay 2-3 days. 16 million bucks.

He wanted out. He took the best offer... Calgary 111 points in 2021/2022. Columbus 81.

Where you following the NHL? What analyst had them improving?
they called for a few points less.

Old Johnnie boy wanted out. At any cost..16 million and dead last..He wanted out. He was peeved with something. Maybe one day it will come out. Given Brady's brother and his exodus, I am guessing serious issues. Then Huberdeau and Kadri!!!! Wahh, what is happening in Calagry.

Claude G pocketed a cool 5-6 million extra from the Sens.. The prodigal son returns..yea for 5-6 mill extra.

No relations between wining and free agency... Money, desire to leave, good climate/environment/hot (as in hip)town/taxes.

Marian Hossa got lucky. he caught the upstart Chicago Blackhawks at a time when their young starts where making no money. So he signed a lucrative deal and was on an ascending team. That today, has disappeared. Bridges are gone. Young stars get paid instantly. So little money.. Now you chase the spots where there is still cash...Winning team, losing team, who care..Money, taxes/weather/revenge on your old team

16 f***ing million. Old Johnnie boy needs his head examined. And Claude needs to thank, Levesque, Lessage and G. Vignault..He had more brains than Johnnie boy..5-6 million more. I love Claude. We need to make T-Shirts.
That was nuts. An NHL star player that was either completely naive as to the potential of the team, or was prepared to abandon being on a competitive team in exchange for location and $.

The Senators need to follow the Canadiens' model from last year.

It's pretty clear that DJ's message has gone completely stale and the players have hit peak anger and frustration. Smith's entire persona was built around generating "good vibes" and now that that's gone, there's nothing left.

Bring in someone that can do a hard reset, focus on development (+ getting Chabot and Batherson back on track) and at least make it less miserable for the players to come to the rink the rest of the year.

Then take your high pick and try again next year.

Again, assumptions based on what? He wanted out because? We could get the reason from the horse's mouth, or we could get it from wherever you're pulling it from.

Tell that to NHL players, of course a chance to win matters, don't be obtuse.

Marian Hossa got lucky. he caught the upstart Chicago Blackhawks at a time when their young starts where making no money. So he signed a lucrative deal and was on an ascending team. Marion Hossa was chasing cups from the Pens to Detroit when he had a chance. He landed in Chicago afterwards.

Why do guys take discounts to stay in Tampa rather than test free agency if winning doesn't matter? Why didn't Malkin chase UFA money? Why did Kriecji and Bergeron sign for pennies compared to what could have? They want to win. Seems obvious, they are ultra competitive, of course winning matters. It's why Florida and Tbay couldn't attract free agents years ago, but now they can.

16 f***ing million. Old Johnnie boy needs his head examined. And Claude needs to thank, Levesque, Lessage and G. Vignault..He had more brains than Johnnie boy..5-6 million more. I love Claude. We need to make T-Shirts.
The cognitive dissonance here is astounding, on the one hand you say players only care about money, but then you have a player that chose to take less and had multiple suitors in Cgy, Phi, NYI, NJD and Clb but can't fathom that maybe money isn't the only thing players care about. He said it outright, family reasons and liking the roster. No player commits to 7 years with a team if they think it will result in losing for 7 years.

Giroux could have gotten contracts elsewhere, the guy is still close to a pt per game, he came here because he liked the fit, and we offered a competitive contract. If we didn't have a promising group, you can be sure he'd have looked elsewhere. Nobody wants to lose, and a guy like Giroux is going to have options.

This coach just has to go

Whatever he is trying to do is clearly not working with this Team

Can we hire Bruce since he is wrongfully let go by the Canucks

you misread..

he went from a good team to a bad AND gave up 16 million. All to be closer to home!!!!! He wanted out of Calgary. That was motivation #1. My guess; Phili, the NY teams, Washington, etc. did not want to touch him. Columbus, desperate for anything, made an offer. He had little choice but to take it.

The question is: why did he so desperately want out? And why did Brady's Brother so desperately want out?

Jersey offered him a 7 year 10+ million dollar deal….Their GM said he was shocked, and they thought the deal was done.

Islanders offered a 63+ million dollar contract….

Johnnie Boy wanted out. Yes, he would have loved going home. So say Philie, and the 6-7 Met. teams.

No one wanted him? Age, contract demand, size, piss poor playoff performance. Phili in a rebuild, Washington being OVIE centric. Pitts. being Crosby/Malkin centric. The NY teams are all set, have no added cap room and do not need him...

Columbus needed a flash... pizzaz... Made an offer. He was left with one of 3 choices.. accept, or return to Calgary..or shop around... I am guessing option 3). Only to find out his market was 7 x 7... and those were principally the teams needing flash.. So no Boston, no Florida teams..

He took Columbus... And left 16 million... It was a "I want out".. He did cut of his nose to spite his face.

Brady's brother is younger, tougher, more charismatic. AND ALLOWED Florida to rid itself of Huberdeau.

1) Money 2) spite 3) environment..... win/lose is a distant concern. It enters only if 1 to 3 are met. It can become a tie breaker.

If your two options are NYR and NYI, dollars and term, the same. You take NYR.
Tampa offers 7 x 7... Montreal offers 8 x 9... You take Montreal and buy your wife and all your family a few hundred airplane tickets. It will still be a huge cost benefit to you.

The Sens can attract prime free agents if: they blow their brains out. Its not like Edmonton has been a prime destination. Zach Hyman went because of 7 x 5.5. Toronto gave him 8 x 4... A net gain for him of ~ 6.5 million.. He is a Toronto Pajama boy!!!!!!

It is not "win and they will come". It is "pay and they will come"... Or be shit ass lucky and have your ancestors build a city in a warm spot with ocean front. Or have your present politicians, slice and dice taxes (and services).

I LOVE CLAUDE.

so, a Phili boy, gets a NJ offer of 70 million. On a bad team..at the time, no one knew that they would skyrocket. a 2 hour drive from home. In a dynamic city. (NY not Newark). Turns it down????

The Islanders and 63 million. Well that left ~ 25 million on the table. So I can see Johnnie boy not.

So he take columbus..at 68 million. 2 less than NJ..on a team just as bad as NJ.. Because he believes in them.. Based upon what? A crop of incredible young talent that is coming along? Who???

He wanted out of Calgary!!! He shopped around. And like Kadri..came to discover that the market was drier than he thought!!!! But wanting out, he took the best deal.

Had he really wanted to be closer to home, he could have worked with Calgary on a trade. He could have spent a year lining things up. Phili, the entire MET division. Did Calgary a favor by getting some assets back!! he walked..they got nothing. Took 16 million less. Spooked the shit out of them, so they blew their brains out on Hubereau and Kadri.. Theose contracts will be beautiful in 2025 and beyond.

reason 2 of free agency...anger/revenge... why? Brady's brother the same.. only he was in a way better position.

Are you okay? You type like someone who has schizophrenia.

Ah yes, I did. Won't be the last time lol.

Either way, like most people, I found his decision very surprising. I don't know why, I'd probably prefer anonymity in Columbus over the bright lights and fame of some places.

I asked a friend of mine, one European coach, what he thinks about D.J. Smith and his style.
He watched a few Sens games. Not all of them. So he can paint the picture.

-The Ottawa defense is not that bad, it is just not managed properly.
D-man do not stand up, forwards do not pressure points. They box up right away. Make goalies to overwork and face a lot of shots.
No awareness to clear the slot area or prevent defensive zone passing by opposing team.

-Bad breakouts. Instead using the whole sheet of ice in the neutral zone and change vectors of an attack frequently, to keep teams guessing, DJ is
forcing his team to simple and predictable D to D and to F along the boards plays. It limits offensive chances, offensive zone time, scoring five on five, leads to broken plays and turnovers. No cross passes are allowed at all in their own zone under pressure. For example Chabot can only pass to his D partner behind the net and there is a book on it now.

-Forwards do not use drop passes or cross passes to sustain offensive zone time to tire defense and increase five on five goal production. It has to be practiced as a keep away all the time.

-The whole team is blowing coverage assignments, do turnovers, making the same mistakes again and again without any corrections. Players could just leave for a change the defensive zone if their stick is broken. Total chaos.
Bottom six are just not NHL caliber players. Watson should not be playing enforcer role, can not fight anymore.
Completely useless.

-Team speed is good, but it is not used correctly. The whole team is always chasing a play, because most of the NHL teams play wide and use the whole sheet of ice with cross passes. He said players are not stupid and fully aware, the coach is limiting them with a safe system for breakouts. But it actually leads to more turnovers. It is very frustrating.

-Debrincat needs a setup man, because his game is one-timer, when half of a net is open. You accommodate him, not leaving him to dry to figure this on his own. He has to play a familiar game and a role to benefit the team's scoring. He sees Claude Giroux as the answer. You just have set Claude free in his decision making and not always play strictly a winger.

His conclusion. The coach is throwing away games.

I think someone like Stu should be Cat's winger if that's the case. Giroux is still good enough to be our 2C when Norris is injured, but he's most effective on wing and when he takes faceoffs. Giroux can still be a good playmaker for Cat, but Stu's vision is getting better and better.

I actually think this is pretty good analysis. But at the same time, the team is playing a safe game, especially on breakouts, because of the repeated brutal giveaways that were killing us in November. DJ adjusted things to be safer, and now we're not seeing these brutal giveaways anymore, but as a result, it's killed our 5v5 play. It's pretty clear that after November we switched to just not trying to lose 5v5, then try to win with our special teams. So, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

To be honest, I'd like to see us go back to the systems we were using in November, but hold players accountable and/or let them learn from their mistakes. We were dominating games, but kept getting sunk by brutal giveaways and unclutch goaltending.

I would really like to see

Tkachuk-Pinto-Bath
DeBrincat-Stu-G

I don't know why that hasn't been tried yet. Pinto and Norris play a similar style. Neither are play drivers, and both have great shots and are defensively responsible. Maybe he thinks DeBrincat-Stu-G would have weak boardplay? I don't know...

Man, I want to see us ride with Cat Riddler and G until the wheels fall off.

The hard part would be where to put Norris/Stu if he was back tomorrow. I’d like to see Norris Brady and Batherson back together for a bit with a line of Stu, Pinto, and….

Next season when everyone is healthy for the whole season…. Hahaha

We are 6th worst in defensive zone giveaways, 3 of the teams worse than us are Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, all 3 puck possession teams so it makes sense that they would have more.

I have no idea what the monthly stats are but even if November was god awful, given that we're in that group, then we clearly still have this problem.
