Finnish Prospect Update Thread

What’s the word on Brad Lambert? Only have really seen him at the WJC and to me he looked like a future superstar both times. His Liiga numbers have never been great, but the tools he showed at the WJC were undeniable. Seems Kemmel is the Finn everyone talks about in this draft.

Kemell has been pretty invisible since returning from injury, seems it's been bothering him a great deal, though he was leading all of Liiga in scoring before he got injured. At this point you have to wonder whether the Kemell injury is something he'll be able to recover from or whether it'll permanently affect him, which would be a shame.

Lambert has not been able to function very well in Liiga which is a shame, but yeah his WJC-20 performance was pretty insane. I could see some team reaching for him even if his production doesn't warrant a super early pick.

I’d be tempted by Lambert at 3 tbh

Aron Kiviharju(2006) is the one.

Other than him, there are Rasmus Rinne(2008) and Frans Karjalahti(2009) playing 2 years above their age groups and doing quite well.

In the younger age groups there's something of interest as well but discussing 10yo players might still be a bit early. Perhaps I'll see how that looks in a year or two.

@Erikfromfin, I always look forward to reading your lists. Very informative.

Did you think about dropping Jarventie after his struggles early this season in the USHL? I thought he was pretty bad for such a hyped player. Could've been due to adjusting to a new country, but he was not good.

Didn't see his USHL games but that 2023 draft class is just so weak in general for Finns basicly just 1 man draft with Halttunen I wouldn't bet on anyone else. Been back and forth with him and Nurmi and to some extent Kuusla for that 2nd spot but Järventie gets the nod since he always plays better and stands out in national teams. I like him as a player skilled crafty winger with offense but don't see first round talent in him at this point either.

Does anyone think that G Nick Malik has some NHL upside potential?

Still only 20 years old and had some good stats for KooKoo last season...

Brad Lambert was being featured as part of the 3 headed monster at the top of the draft with Wright and Savoie. What happened to him? Does he fall out of the first round completely now?

Lambert is a very technically skilled player, but lacks in hockey IQ and team play. I don't think he falls out of first round. My prediction would be somewhere in 10 - 20 range.

How is Lamberts mentality?

Reason I ask is I’ve been questioning the young Finn’s mentality lately. I’ve been quite disappointed in a couple of Finnish players the last couple of years. As a Swede there hasn’t been a whole lot of potential star forwards for a long time now so I’ve been rooting for the young Finn’s, particularly Aho, Laine, Pulju and Kakko.

Out of those four only Aho has had a solid career so far. I had very high expectations for all four of them and even saw a lot of similarities between Foppa and Kakko after the WC 2019.

I know the talent is there but they just can’t figure it out. It has to be a mental block/confidence issues, right?

Maybe Lambert has more of a Canadian mentality, where he doesn’t think about it too much and just goes out and play?

Not really sure about your "mentality" theory. Kakko's problem I think is his skating. Pulju I think just lacks skill and hockey IQ. Lambert lacks hockey IQ and lacks in teamplay.

A lot of Ranger fans question Kakko’s mentality and think he’s a complete beta. He has hockey talent, but is afraid to use it. He seems very shy and timid in interviews, and it’s three years now. @EdJovanovski was saying that he could beat up Kakko in a fight, and while I think it’s too speculative to know about that result, it epitomizes how he’s viewed. There are a lot of mentality questions with Kakko. Probably the biggest questions about him.

Well, they should probably trade him then.

What's the point of that? We need him to turn it around. We aren't giving up on him. Mentality would be a problem with him though, not the team. He should play a little more, but he was top 6 until his injury midseason. He'll be top six this season again.

If he's such a complete beta, then obviously that's not a guy you're ever going to win anything with. Should just trade him now before the rest of the league finds out.

At worst, he ends up like a worse skating Nichushkin. He’s still a useful player barely being paid anything. In a trade his value would be low. It’d be bad asset management to have that view.

Kakko's main problem is the same as Laine's; Rautala's terrible, antiquated methods that make his skaters skate in mud. Barkov for example was a weaker skater than both but actually got decently competent training.

And noticed this too. He plays very timid, still. I think that that's partially because he was rushed to NHL before ready. It is very apparent when watching him. He has no attitude at all. I thought he did have some in Liiga so something changed.

It's true that many of these top Finnish players have had some problems with their mental. Aho's is excellent of course, but Laine struggles with his. Kakko's of course is a massive issue.

Lambert outthinks it right now, that's true. But I feel like he could have enough attitude to grow out of that. Joakim Kemell, though, probably has the better mental. Although we'll have to see how he does next season.

It is pretty sad how Finnish players' attitudes still seems to be an issue. Perhaps a systematic youth coaching problem.

Is Finnish 2024 draft group looking extremely strong or am I imagining things? Not just with elite talent in Kiviharju, but in terms of depth as well.

There's 8 players in the Hlinka tourney right now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like that's a lot more than we've usually seen. And that 8 is with the top offensive forwards that I am aware of are not even being included (Emil Hemming, Konsta Helenius, Tuomas Suoniemi).

Two 12 year olds have made their debut in U16 Sm-Sarja this season already. Frans Karjalahti and Otto Boman. Names to look for the future or is it too early?
