I was visiting my dad during the opening weekend of the WC. He's sport interested, but almost exclusively footy (the rest is the odd F1, Olympics etc). He's aware that there's some big German star in hockey but doesn't know the name. I don't think that's uncommon.

BUT, the only other hockey player he's aware of is probably Erich Kühnhackl, so there's that.

Long way to go in this game. Germans can't give up a quick one when the 3rd opens up as that will crush them and they won't be able to recover, at least keep it to 2-1 by the 10 minute mark and they will be in decent shape.

So Germans really don't realize how good he is?

That's a shame but I assume the same thing would happen if there was a terrific Canadian soccer player. As we say in Canada, "No pucks, No bucks".
Jep, probably a good comparison. Actually, there's a terrific canadian soccer player around the corner from me at Bayern Munich playing. Pretty sure millions of Germans know who Alphonso Davies is but never heard of Leon Draisaitl. ;)

I think if you just randomly ask people who he is probably half of them have never heard of him, people who are generally into sports most likely have heard his name somewhere and know that he is supposed to be good, casual Hockey fans know he is good but have never really seen him play outside of the odd national team game and people who are really into hockey know how good of a player he is and what his status is in the hockey world.

When talking to my parents or older people the last universilly known Hockey player was probably Erich Kühnhackl.

Germany plays sort of like Canada, I find. Opportunistic, they like to "bite" and shoot unexpected types of shots. They've been getting better and better, quite impressive.

Good job by Germany to get a goal. Uneven period by Finns, they had good control for the first 10 or so but got disoriented by the goal and penalties. Better towards the end.

Yeah I am pretty confident that Alphonso Davies is more well known that Draisaitl in Germany

Also, Draisaitl is no Nowitzki when it comes to personality. He's quite reserved and "safe" in interviews sadly.

Is Gensheimer more popular then Draisaitl? I would say that handball is the second most popular sport in Germany.

I'd think so. Gensheimer just gets way more exposure in German TV due to the national team games being shown on ARD/ZDF, the national tv stations everyone gets. Also plays in Europe

Finland a bit sloppy. Makes for a more entertaining game. I thought 2-0 meant game over in the 1rst but not the case.

There's a 100% chance that Gensheimer is more well known than Draisaitl. Wether hockey or handball are more popular can be dented at length and without ever coming to a conclusion, but the national handball team is way bigger because a) they compete for titles (or at least used to), b) their tournaments are during the soccer winter break, which leads to c) they're on public TV and get more casual viewers by a huge amount.

I think the Germans are going to tie it, they've been buzzing around the Finnish net and creating some good scoring chances.

Thanks. Do children play hockey more in the north of Germany or in the south? I guess it's in the south.

Nowitzky became a star after the Beijing olympics and the NBA title. He was older than Drai is now.So there is hope
Dirk has been advertising for that crappy bank since 2003. IIRC his quest to qualify for the 2008 games was a big story already, thus him being the flag bearer.
Most of that came from carrying Germany to World Cup bronze in 200x and EUROs silver in 2005. Probably not something Draisaitl can do.

Anyway, back to the 3rd period...

Would love to see the Germans win this. If they do, I'll root for Germany to win it all.

I actually feeld that regardless of the progress we have seen in the last years I don't see the sport to grow into something mainstream in both, people playing it and tv audiences. The reason is quiet simple that compared to football which is an extremely low scoring game and where one lucky bounce, odd ref decision, long shot, can lift the underdog past a top team, hockey is to much of a skill game.
The game here is the best indication of this. The Finns have been playing like the first people to walk upward in the first period, but were up 2:0. The reality is that the top teams can play as shitty as it gets, but in front of the net they are just more efficient which is gonna be enough in 80% of the cases. One lucky bounce or odd call is just not gonna be enough. So expecting something like Greece's run to Euro championship in 2004 is just not realistic here. So from here I don't see people in the smaller makets getting all invested cause the chances of actually winning something are pretty much at zero.
