I'm shocked Norrena's on the team, but seriously, he plays for Finland in a lot of tourneys, doesn't he? Might as well take someone who knows the big ice. I get the impression that a lot of Finns dump on him because he plays in Sweden, but you all might want to check out his stats sometime. If he was a little more reasonable with his contract demands, he WOULD be an NHL goalie.

I didn't say anything about Norrena in my previous post. I just referred to the fact that most of the flyes fans wouldn't consider Niittymäki as an overrated goalie.

I think a lot of teams are building on chemistry... Finland had a lot of it in the WC so a lot of players are returning.

Ruutu!

Urheiluruutu with a gem (it went something like this):

"In the end, Westerlund had no trouble naming the top six defensemen. Outside of them, Ossi Väänänen made the team."

Ossi was Finland's third best d-man in the WCH behind the excellent Timonen and Numminen. He would've even made a fine addition to the Canadian defense there. Somehow the Finnish media is able to notice Ossi going down to 13 mins of icetime since the 20 mins of 2003-04, but they collectively and consistently fail to realize that Berg has a Pejorative Slured hockey sense that costs games.

Very well put. I hope they don't have to put Berg on the ice for any of the important games. Berg was once considered a top prospect because he can skate very well for a big guy and play psysical. But anyone who has ever seen a Berg interview can tell that there's not a lot going on up there, basically Aki is too dumb to play smart hockey..

correct me if I'm wrong...but is Peltonen the Jörgen Jönsson of Finland? :biglaugh:

In the sense that both play in big international tournaments despite playing in Europe, yes.

When it comes to the reason for that, no. Jönsson apparently didn't enjoy the North American way of life and returned to Sweden after a good start to his NHL career. Peltonen, meanwhile, wasn't good enough and failed to get a contract after a few years, then returned to Europe. That said, he is quite good on the big ice an in the obstruction-free environment of the "new NHL" (I hate the term) he could probably be a second-liner.

I don't think it has a lot to do with playing in Sweden, that doesn't matter. The problem is that whenever he plays against anything but Denmark, he sucks. And Denmark isn't exactly a power.

Now, if you think that way about him, explain me why Niittymaki was the club team starter ahead of Norrena when Frank was 21?

Only 4-5 of those would get a spot in the Swedish team, skillwise. But the irony is, that the Finns gets 500% better whenever they play us, so if we face eachother in the later stages, they´ll probably roll right by us anyway, hehe..

Timonen, Pitkänen, Salo, Selänne, Lehtinen, Koivu, Jokinen, T. Ruutu, Kiprusoff, Lehtonen...those for SURE, others as well (like S. Kapanen). Yeah I know it's fun to say 4-5, but the truth is half the team.

Oh yeah and that team would rule the universe. :D

You mean when he was 19?

1999-00
Norrena 21gp---1.79---.935 (playoffs: 4gp---2.56---.899)
Niittymäki 32gp---2.15---.930 (8gp---1.72---.944)

2000-01
Norrena 39gp---1.75---.931 (10gp---1.29---.945)
Niittymäki 21gp---2.48---.907 (-)

2001-02
Norrena 32gp---1.98---.932 (4gp---1.64---.952)
Niittymäki 27gp---1.84---.937 (4gp---2.23---.926)

What was the year when Norrena was backing up Niittymäki in the finals against Jokerit? TPS won the cahmpionship.

That would be a great argument for the 'Norrena or Niittymäki' debate. :D

2000. Norrena ended up getting his job back the next season, and got hurt in 2002

I think Ruutu wouldn't make the team. I mean right now. And Salo is debatable, 7th defenceman at best. Jokinen and Lehtinen would be 3-4 liners.

T. Ruutu would NOT make the team instead of Sedins or PÃ¥hlsson or whatever? :biglaugh:

Salo is debateable? Name 5 guys in their defense lineup that are better?

Jokinen would make the team as a 3rd line center.

But the real problem comes here....what I am surprised to hear...

You think Lehtinen would not make the team? You think he would not make the first two lines? You are so badly underestimating Jere Lehtinen it's not even funny.

Lehtinen should make ANY team in this world. In an instant. He is probably one of the best overall players in the world after Forsberg. God damn...I did not even think that there were people on these forums that would so badly underestimate Lehtinen. Especially finnish people. Lehtinen would make the world all stars team, if it was a team that was supposed to play serious games. He would actually be the second guy I would pick after Forsberg, if I would do a sweden-finland mixed team.

Tuomo Ruutu is easily the most dynamic player on the team. Plus he is going to be healthy. Anyone remember him from the world cup? He was the best player on the ice.

The goal he scored against canada...man...you could just see a superstar in the making. And he was injured.

Anyone got video of this? I need to see again. Even though I have it on tape.

I said Salo would be the 7th defenceman at best so I'll name you 4 defenceman. Lidström, Norsrtöm (sp?), Öhlund and the ex-Islanders defenceman, can't spell his name.

Yes, Jokinen would be 3rd liner, mayde 4th.

Show me where did I say that Lehtinen wouldn't make the team? As a defensive forward he'd be 3rd liner.

Näslund - Forsberg -Alfredson
Zetterberg - Koivu - Selänne

As for Ruutu, ok I'll take it back. ;) He'd have chances, but the fact that Holmström didn't make the team was the reason I said that Ruutu wouldn't make the team. My bad. :innocent:

You mean Kenny Jönsson would make the team before Salo? :D

You did not say Lehtinen would not make the team, you said he would be a 3rd or 4th liner. I said I would select him second in this mixed team. He would be in the first two lines. The whole finnish first line would be #1 or #2 line of that team (historically, it would be the 1st line as they have been much more effective than the foppa line). The other line could be Alfie-Foppa-Näslund. Yeah I know Alfie is a right winger, but I would not want to drop Näslund out of the top 2 lines.

Lehtinen is better than Zetterberg.

If you think otherwise, you are SEVERELY underrating Jere.

Okay I didn't notice the chemistry Selänne/Koivu/Lehtinen have so I'll give you that one too. ;)

So now we only disgree on Salo. And I think I have made it clear to you; 7th defenceman at best IMO.

As for Lehtinen being better than Z, I'd say that if I wanted a goal scorer I'd take Z, but if I wanted a player who is trying to prevent as much goals as possible I'd take Lehtinen.
