I don't think refs have played favourites, they have just been shit

I'm not saying they were, and I wasn't counting "potential penalties" either, it's hockey and whining about that shit is dumb, but the fact is that the Finns were borderline physical in preventing the Czechs from making plays and if more whistles had been blown it probably would have let the Czechs play their game more and prevented the Finns from dictating play so much. It is what it is, I just don't get why a finnish fan would be complaining

A Finnish person isn't satisfied if they can't complain.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Finland lost to Germany. Finland has a tendency to lose to underdogs, especially if those underdogs apply a great strategy.
Yes but in K.O. vs Underdogs??? Never out! Despite i expect a very tight game.

Czechs actually won the holdings - Finns the slashing. All theese interference, holding and slashing went unwhistled. It actually destroyed much of the game.

I think the NHL teams just feel like they don't need to use such strategies, because of the level of talent playing there. Imagine if Finland had Aho, Barkov, Rantanen, Hintz, Teräväinen, Laine, etc. playing? I doubt they'd be playing this kind of hockey.

Teams that play boring hockey become unwanted destinations for star players, and the fan attendance/ratings also decrease.

NHL teams also play each other numerous times rather than just once, so other teams will eventually make adjustments.

I get what your saying, but then again not all NHL teams are as stacked as say Colorado. Like Phoenix or Buffalo are quite terrible. And yet you still don't see this kind of trapping. Why? Because I think it doesn't work so easily in the NHL, even when thinking of the best of trapping teams (e.g. Devils in the 1990's)...

They say the two-goal lead is the worst lead in hockey. Well, except when you're Finland. Then any lead is a good lead. Man, this team is a rabid female dog to score against.

Also, Group B sweeping Group A in the quarters. Who would've thought.
I have to say, one must respect Jalonen with these rather mediocre teams, that was beautiful hockey! (Maybe not in the literal sense but thinking of our players...)

Uh, 1:0 game in hockey, with the only goal scored in the 2nd period. That always means the team which lost was really lame in terms of offensive force. And today's game was no exception.

Yeah, I don't like this style of allowing all sorts of interference - where did the zero tolerance go? Not that they did a too good job of it but still it was better than this.

For sure. after that goal it was Euro 2006. However, credit to Jalonen... Pesan didn't adjust and did have a PP stretch over 2nd and 3rd period. I don't like the defensive hockey but we won 2 world juniors that way and I enjoyed those golds. The key is to score and if we did, I think the Finns would've been flying again.

This went exactly how Finland wanted... Pesan even gifted them by messing up all chemistry and sitting our 3rd best scorer.

I'm mad for sure and I'm a big Pesan supporter.. but, before the game, I mentioned how stupid the lineup was and it was.

I believe the word you're looking for is "effective".

Congratulations to Finland. Now they must play again against Germany. Jukka Jalonen seems to be the best coach Finland has ever had. We will see, if they can beat Germany a second time.

A friend of mine just made this exact comparison
Thing is... I'm okay with them doing it. we are going home and they're not. I'm not complaining about the Finn's but Pesan did have some gamebreakers. He split them up and surrounded them with 'hard workers' and eliminated all creativity.

Spacek gone is a brilliant example
Flek in Top 6? How does that happen?
Hanzl in Top 6?

I would've tossed Chytil and Spacek in Top 6.

Vrana back with Kubalik. they cancel each other and did in our first 2 losses.

All 3 games they played together, we lost. Not because they suck but, to exagerate a lot, it'd be like putting phil kessel on a line with brett hull.lol

The SECOND we put Vrana down a line and Zadina to first line, we won 5 straight. So we went back to the strategy that cost us the first 2 games.lol

I was hoping that Radil or Zohorna would score to shut me up! 4th line killers. Didn't see it.

I honestly don't blame the players.

Tip of the cap to Jalonen and the Finns.

Pesan f***ed up

It's amazing how Latvian organizers have managed to keep this tournament Covid-19 free. It would've ruined the entire tournament if one of the top teams had infections spreading inside the tournament, while tournament was live. Case Italy happened before the tournament, so I'm not talking about that. At least we got to see a somewhat normal tournament. With poor rosters perhaps, but it's very entertaining and a real shame that we didn't have a WHC in 2020.

I think that IIHF will remember Latvia's good hosting and give Latvia another chance to host with fans in the attendance sooner than later.

Textbook win from a team coached by Jukka Jalonen. All heart and discipline. Effective, but honestly quite boring unless you're rooting for the team.

I don't know how good he would do as a coach in a league like NHL where teams play 82 games and possibly playoffs, but as a short tournament coach he is absolutely one of the best in the world. Really squeezing the best out of very thin material.

Biggest credit to Olkinuora, though. Made at least two very critical saves during the last 10 minutes.

Well, I wrote in our Finnish forum before the game that it will be very tight: the Czechs are better on paper and they know how to play against us but we have better coaching and maybe a slightly more coherent teamplay... Jalonen is truly impressive.

There is a small rumor that something regarding Jalonen & NHL might be announced after this tournament. Remains to be seen how true it is. If that happens, my wish as a Finnish guy is that Jalonen would coach both in NHL & Finnish Olympic team next year, but perhaps he would leave EHT & WHC 2022 to someone else.

Actually I just remembered that Finland is the host country of 2022. Need Jalonen to coach that too :). Finland might actually get a better roster that time.

Well, I'm complaining because this kind of refereeing hinders the skillful and speedy side of hockey in the WHC which is a pity. Tbh, I think the referees were about equally bad to both sides in this particular game. But anyway, I just don't like how they allow all kinds of interference on attacking and creating chances.
