When Lafontaine and Keane collided it was a bit nastier looking than last night.

Filip did come back to finish out the 2nd period and the shift or two he took he looked okay. He was involved behind the net and along the boards.

Hopefully it's not bad but I think there's a decent chance he goes on IR or LTIR. I also don't think the Rangers are going out west for 4 games with just 12 forwards so I'd expect them to call someone up. It won't be Othmann who hasn't been playing. Most likely to get recalled--Rempe, Berard, Groulx or Leschyshyn. Maybe some chance for Sykora but I think it will be one of the first four. In any case I think Brodzinski is the most likely to fill in at 3C for now.

On the hit itself. It was an accident. Like others here I'm not happy with how Miller's been playing but there's no way he's trying to take out his own player and he probably feels pretty bad about it. Basically the Rangers want their D to pinch down to keep plays alive in the offensive zone and there was little enough of a forecheck from our team the first half of the game.

2. If that is all it takes to put him out he shouldn't be in the nhl anymore. His health is on the line. Unfortunately he was our best center this year but realistically if that's all it takes he'll never play for us in playoffs anyway. We probably should have used the Smith assets on someone that could play center or wing.

I agree, it's unfortunate but his brain gets rattled too easily. He was finally coming into his own too.

I absolutely agree. The hope here is that its an over abundance of caution, but I think reality is that this kid is one hard hit away from major life problems. Similar to Tua with the Dolphins. The talent is so attractive, but there's no reliability and the downside risk is just unacceptable.

I was expecting them to keep him out of the game after that hit, regardless of if he said he was good to go or not.

I think its a bad sign that he came back but then left after a shift

He does not have awareness, which is too bad. He's like a racehorse with blinders, and he's usually flying around in a crouched way instead of upright.

Same can be said for Miller, who should have had a clearer view of Chytil coming up. Chytil was looking toward the boards at the puck, Miller was coming down looking at everything.

As for the collision, yes, Lafontaine/Keane was worse, and the impact wasn't as severe, but Fil's head still decelerated rapidly. Remember that concussions are about the brain being exposed to acceleration/deceleration forces inside the head, not about the impact of the head on whatever contact surface.

And yeah, I don't get the Miller hate. He's been playing kinda shitty so far but no one's trying to take out their own teammate.

Heart sank when I saw it. Hoping for the best but expecting, realistically, the worst.

Unfortunately, a cage probably wouldn't have made a difference. Concussions don't require that the head actually touch something. Any impact causing the head to move in a jarring fashion (even within a cage) could be enough to cause the same damage. That's why football players, who wear a cage, still get CTE and have tremendous issues unfortunately.

At this point, it's about the movement of his brain within his skull, not external impact to the skull itself.

I'm upset as a fan of the team because he's been our best center and if healthy could have been what got us further than last year in the playoffs. The team was at its deepest with his play this year.

But as a fan of the player, I hope he retires if this is the type of contact that will concuss him. I will still remember him fondly and his quality of life is far more important than any impact he will have on the franchise even if they did win a cup. At the end of the day, it's a game and not worth sacrificing any player's quality of life.

And if you're criticizing Miller for his play as of late, that's fine. But this aint the thing to get mad at him for. Incidental collisions happen in this sport and it was unintentional. Lay off the guy for this.

Kinda stating the obvious here... everyone pretty much knew going in this year, you just can't trust this poor kid to stay healthy. I hate to say it, because I really think the kid has high end talent. But I think you have to start planning for a future without Chytil. And ideally I think you'd like to go toward youth in this case.

Mika and Trocheck are both 31. Zibanejad's game has obviously fallen off a cliff. I posted a bit ago about Mika's 5v5 play last year. His 5v5 production dropped to that of a 3rd liner/role player. It's crazy. His numbers are inflated from being a passenger on a top powerplay unit. At this point who knows if he can turn it around or not. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of the end for him. This team will struggle big time if he can't get it together.

Ideal scenario you go out and identify a young talented center with upside to fill in that 3C spot. Hopefully it's a player that can develop enough to supplant one of the 2 veterans when the time comes. Either way we need to get some actual high end center prospects in the system. We have almost nothing. Laba is really the only one I have any hope for to be more than just a plug

Rangers/Pack have pretty much used Edstrom exclusively on the wing so far. For now I would expect Brodzinski to slot in for Filip. Groulx might be another option. There is some offense to his game though whether he has the ability to fill a 3C role at the NHL level would be something of a question. He is off to a pretty decent start with the Pack this year and he's got decent size.
