Why is there a third place game in the WC, and, does anyone care about it?

Strangely enough there have been some really good 3rd place games historically. It is also important to your ranking, the better ranking the easier groups in the next qualifiers and competitions like the Euros coming up in 2 years. So it's not the same as in hockey WCs where it hardly means anything.
