Kings News: Fiala to for 2022 first-round pick and Brock Faber

Here's my nuanced opinion...the youth just aren't that good right now and Blake doesn't have the time to wait for them.

90% of all youth (especially forwards) breaking in the NHL 'were not good enough' until they had about 100 NHL games experience and 'relatively soon' given meaningful minutes...be that 50 games or 100 games into their career. Very few could break in at 18-20 and were capable of excelling in top 6 roles. There are the Matthews, the McDavids and then there's everyone else. The ones that eventually make the grade and play top 6 and succeed, necessarily didn't do anyhting to deserve that or have to earn that...but actually given the chance...and not 1 game, but dozens to assimilate and grow into becoming successful.

An example of not given a chance:
Lias Andersson comes here, goes to Ontario and learns to play wing. Excels and is the best player there, several games. Then only gets a few games on line 4. Creates scoring chances almost every shift. Gets 3 shots in 7 minutes of time. Demonstrates good hands and scores 2 shootout goals . (I think 2 in 2 yrs)

Then this past season, looks great in preseason with Vilardi. The 2 of them BOTH looked their best as Kings,
when playing together. They looked for each other and made great plays. Lias won almost every board battle in preseason. Very impressive hands, taking pucks like Mike Richards did. Then, Lias got injured,..Gabe then makes the team and had a flat start...after the opening bad start, he pays the price and sent down to learn wing.

Lias gets healthy, goes to Ontario and scores 6 goals in 4 games. Any King player probably couldn't do that. Seriously. Lias comes back and gets crap icetime again. He surprisingly got 1 game as LW1 with Kopi, but got hurt in that game and left. That was HIS ONLY chance in a top 6 role in 2 years. One period.

And now, he's seemingly gone. Watch him go somewhere else now and become a good player and score 15 goals and 30 pts.

My remaining wish list for the Summer:
- Move Petersen
- Move Iafallo
- Move Walker
- Add a Top 4LHD (Preferably with size/snarl) Chiarot, Zadorov, Cole
- Add size/toughness to the bottom six (Crouse, Deslauriers, KYLE CLIFFORD)

It's nice having a GM that knows what he wants. No wishy washy BS.

Target your player; get your player.

Agree with most, except no to Clifford. He's a roster spot just wasted on 3-5 min a night and really isn't effective anymore. Deslauriers , while not the aggitator like Lemieux, is a better, tougher version of what Pepe does.

Basically anyone 23 or under in the bottom six.

Let's use Kaliyev as an example. Blake said we need him to be a top sixer next year. Welp, RIP that opportunity. Now you have a guy who can score 15-20 from the bottom line with PP time and some of the best metrics on the team having the rug swooped out from under him. He CANT perform better until he's given more time and offensive situations.

That's to say nothing of guys like Byfield, Vilardi, etc. who are going to have a hell of a time breaking into the league while watching their compatriots on other teams get force fed offensive situations and PP time up to 18-20 min a game, meanwhile we can't even give them AHL PP time...

If I'm guys like Vilardi, JAD, Turcotte, I'm asking for a trade already, I get wanting to earn it and perform, but you're actively roadblocking NHL success, or at least glass-ceiling-ing it.

I think Kaliyev did the best of all the youth, and I don't think Kaliyev's opportunities are gone next year by any means. I think what they've done with Kaliyev is great and is reaping dividends. Started on the 4th line, and was effective. Breaking up that line would have been silly, it was one of our most effective (if not the most effective). Then, they put him on the PP where he scored 33% of his points. He's right on the development curve where he should be. He moved up here and there at the end of the year and wasn't nearly as effective when playing with our top-6 guys. That's mental, he will overcome that.

Byfield is going to improve regardless of where he plays. His line was a nightmare last year for many reasons, but this is the type of trade that will benefit him, not hinder him. Brown and AA are going to be replaced by far better players, he's going to have far better linemates. As a 2nd OA, he should be able to put up better than Jordan Nolan numbers, regardless of who he plays with, but he's a big guy and has a different curve. Plus he had a major injury. I'm not worried about him whatsoever, and I'm excited to see what he will bring with some effective players around him.

The writing is on the wall with JAD, he's not as good as Lizotte in his role. Turcotte shouldn't need any help getting on a roster with his pedigree, if he stays healthy he will do so. Vilardi, well, we know what he can do. If he brings his A-game consistently he can earn a spot.

I fully see both sides of the coin here, all these concerns have merit. It just shows there isn't really one path to building a winner in the NHL. I think one thing that gets lost here is this: signing a guy like Fiala closes one door but opens another. With his contract, the team certainly is going to need younger guys to produce to give them cap flexibility. For guys like Vilardi, Kupari, etc, it changes things. Currently, if they want better minutes and situations they would have to outperform a guy like Iafallo to earn those. Now, if they even bring something that is a close equivalent, it's more beneficial for the team to keep them and trade AI due to team salary.

The wildcard in all of this is Todd.

Kaliyev-Kopitar-Fiala
Moore-Danault-Arvidsson
Iafallo-Byfield-Kempe

That's some damn good opportunity right there. I mean, Byfield gets an upgrade no matter what. Kaliyev likely will too. And it puts guys in really good slots.

Vilardi, Turcotte, and Kupari should be more motivated if anything. The big losers in the Fiala deal are AA and Andersson, who likely won't be around next year. Couple that with Brown's retirement and three forward roster spots are there, with only one now filled. Vilardi and Kupari should have no problem gaining a roster spot due to salary (playing time being another story), and the door has opened wider for Turcotte if he stays healthy.

Finally, for the love of god, put Lizotte between Grundstrom and Lemieux of the 4th.

A lot rides on Byfield and Kaliyev, IMO. Forget about Turcotte, Vilardi, JAD, etc. Those two guys NEED to break out at some point. I think Kaliyev will and I think he will be given more opportunities this year (I totally understand the concerns that he might not). Byfield is a total wildcard. Our biggest need at forward is for a Kopitar replacement. With his contract expiring in two years, Blake will want to see something from Byfield before deciding which direction to go at center. Last thing we want is for Kopitar to get a 3 year extension (which could be signed as early as next year) to be the number 1 center. The success of the franchise basically hinges on that as well as goaltending. I think we’re fine on D, even if Clarke doesn’t become the next Doughty.

Lets wait and see what the roster looks like in a couple months. It’s sounding like Blake isn’t done yet. We also know Arvidsson will get injured at least once this season which will open a spot up for someone. And who knows if Moore can build on last season or if he’ll be another Iafallo.

I am ok with the trade. The cap hit is probably 1 million to high for me but it is what it is.
The chances of getting a Fiala type of player with the #19 is slim to none + Brock was never going to play in the west so far from his family, that was made clear with him not turning Pro, but still need to confirm this.

The risk of this blowing up is there but I think Blake is rolling the dice since the Arvy and Danault moves paid dividends so he is a bit on a roll. I would put Fiala on a line with Arvy and Danault because why not. They can generate ~80 goals if healthy and potential fix most of our scoring issues.

For the prospects Kaliyev is the first affected. He won't play PP1 unless the new special teams coach feels a need for his shot. I think the 1st PP is overloaded with Fiala- Danault- Kempe -Doughty - Kopitar

2nd PP will be a mixed bag but needs to include Durzi, Kaliyev, Byfield at least.

I see some frustration of posters that this blocks some kids from getting top 6 minutes. I get that. But some kids like Newhook, Boldy were thriving as 3rd liners so lets' see how this plays out in basically year 2 for Kaliyev and Byfeild if you remove the missed injury time.

The rest of the prospects are gravy, Byfield, Kaliyev and Clark need to hit. So the focus for me is on them. Turcotte, Vilardi need more time to recover from lost development years\months due to injuries. Patience here for them is key.

We also have some gems in Chromiak and possibly Fagemo that might surprise us like Spence and Durzi did, so let's hold off calling this trade a development blocker, we still got tons of kids developing in other leagues. When and if they are ready, we can then discuss who should get moved for roster spots.

Kopitar's replacement will either be Byfield or Matthews.

I understand this gripe, up to a point.

There was nobody bulldozing a path for Voynov’s roster spot, he had to force the hand of managment with his play in the AHL & in training camp before we jettisoned JJ. It’s not a terrible way to do business.

And it was never the plan to move JMFJ. Voynov didn't force it either.

Kopitar, Richards, Gagne, Penner, Williams, Brown. That was the top 6. DL would've loved to go into the playoffs with Doughty, Scuderi, Mitchell, Johnson, Greene, Martinez, and Voynov on the roster. They never had to play more than 6 D in 2012. In 2014, they lost Mitchell for a series, and Regher for most of the playoffs. They had a bunch of injuries in 2013 too.

Then when Gagne got hurt, and Penner was a total bust, DL got desperate, and luckily Carter was available for far less than what Columbus paid to get him.

I'm hoping Kupari can solidify himself as an NHL player this year. He has all the tools. Has some NHL games under his belt. Showed some flashes this past season. He's 22 and has an offseason to prepare. He should be poised and ready to establish himself. He can also lineup at any forward position.

Grundstrom should be on the cusp of a breakout season as well.

You get that, plus contributions from Kaliyev and hopefully Byfield, plus a bounce back year from Iafallo, and the forward group looks pretty deep.

The defense still looks very suspect though.

I think Voynov absolutely pushed for a spot, not JJ's directly but it gave them flexibility.

Johnson deal opened spot for Voynov

Lombardi told NHL.com last week that he had an idea Voynov, a second-round pick in 2008, would fit in with Mitchell after seeing them play together earlier in the season before Voynov was sent back to Manchester of the American Hockey League on Feb. 10.

"They were really good, and actually he probably should have been with the team then when I sent him back," Lombardi said. "But, it gave me a snapshot and I said, 'OK, if we've got to do something, we can do it.' "

"bottom 6" King's bottom 6 is looking like
Iafallo, Byfield, Kaliyev
Grundström, Kupari, Vilardi

All that has to happen is someone needs to outplay Lizotte. This is not a typical bottom 6 where the youth is banished with grinders. There is the complaint about ice time. If the lines start playing well, they will get more ice time. There are plenty of spots for the youth to show they can contribute.

Fiala getting 8M is great for the youth. It showed them what level they need to hit to get paid & with that cap hit Fiala makes prospects on ELC's playing on the big club, a necessity.

We only have one right handed shot forward guaranteed to make the team in Arvidsson.

Is that something we should look into?

Johnson deal opened spot for Voynov

If Gagne doesn't get hurt, and if Penner had done what he was brought in to do, there's no Carter. There wasn't even a spot down the middle for him either.

That article is from May 2012. That's half way through the run or whatever. There was no plan to fire Murray, and there was no plan to move Johnson for Carter. Both moves were made in desperation because the actual plan wasn't working. They were supposed to be a contender with Richards, but all they were doing was staying in the playoff race. Johnson became expendable because of Voynov, and Drewiske as the 7th D was a risk they were willing to take to get any kind of scoring depth. If one or two of those top 6 D get hurt though, like they did in 2013 and 2014, who knows what happens.

I really don't agree with how Blake is building this team. There are things that I think he should have done differently. I'm just gonna go with it. I think we should build this team and roll 3 lines.

Fiala Kopitar Arvidsson
Kupari Donut Kempe
Iafailo/Kalliyev Byfield Vilardi

Grundstrom/Kaliyev Lizotte Lemieux

This only leaves out Kaliyev who I'm convinced has not earned a top 6 role yet. He's got good size, but the talent's just not there. You can interchange Kaliyev with a couple other players. IMO Iafailo shouldn't even be on this team.

Arty has shown 10x the game that Kupari ever has.

I’m not sure we are even talking about the same players when I read things like this.

I haven't seen much from Kaliyev. He's got crisp, clean passes but as for offense, I haven't seen much. On the other hand, I've seen a lot of plays from Kupari where I was just amazed at the kid. He's definitely got it. He's gonna be better than Kempe if he continues on this trajectory and is given ample playing time. Kaliyev's got size and that's good. I'm thinking he tops out as a top 9/4th liner that can throw his body around. Kalieyev could've been great, but this team has just mishandled him so much. I don't have any faith in this development system. Blake et al have no idea how to develop. Let's hope he doesn't screw up Byfield. I'm about done with Blake already.

I can't believe everyone has gone back to agreeing with "well the youth just have to outplay the guys in front of them" shit. I guess RIP grundstrom, benched for scoring in three straight games, is a faded memory., amongst a million other evidence-based issues with kid integration.

I LOVE the Fiala move, but the above is a more than fair concern, has a TON of history to back it up, and we just took the last top six roster spot from a blue chip forward. "just be better" is some absolute bunk when you're turning scorers into 10-minute checkers. Soon it will be "oh well we just traded kaliyev for a better bottom sixer because what's the point in having a sniper on the 4th line" if there's no change.
I don’t think people realize how the Kings are operating. They’re going to continue to funnel in external players because they’re afraid of the prospects failing. But the reason they’re failing is due to coaching and ice time.

People don’t realize Blake is try to save his own skin by making sure the Kings are a bubble team. He has very little faith in the forwards and it’s obvious.

If the youth continues to get screwed then we’re looking to another 5-6 years of drafting and another coach to build the right way.

The way this team is ran has all the makings of “got to make AEG happy and keep my job”
