I think the favorites are Canada and Russia equally. Finland is the only country I see actually challenging these teams to gold.

Hoping for the Finns, but not expecting them to win.

I would put Canada as number one. Russia is a beast and have a change if they kill the previous game early on and can just surf and save energy. If not, then Canada has an edge.

Finland has a decent change of winning the tournament, but it needs still two games with perfect execution of game-plan and some lucky bounces. Skill difference is so massive that there has to be some luck in play when playing two back-to-back playoff games against so stacked opponents.

Canada and Russia rather equal favourites, Finland as the dark horse some distance behind them - and for the USA it would take a near miracle...

Like every host team when they're qualified for the semi-final.

not every host nation. Canada played the late 1/2 final in Quebec. but iirc there was a day off in between the 1/2 final and final. So, not a big deal, both teams had plenty of time to recover for the final.

In most cases Canada will always opt for the late game anyway, we value player routine more important than 4 extra hours of recovery time + evening TV ratings > than 4 extra hours of recovery time.

Although, again iirc the final was an afternoon game in Canada. prime time for Russia. I guess we are the more accommodating hosts in that respect. I actually watched the game in Moscow with my neighbors who were quite rowdy to say the least. The Vodka was flowing like the Volga.

I think it will be Russia vs Canada for gold and Canada takes it.

Finland won't give a rat's ass about the bronze and will lose to USA.

Matthews will have a big day. :help:

Finland always gives a damn about bronze.

This is not the olympics. Finns didn't come to this tournament to win a bronze medal. If they lose tomorrow they won't be too motivated to win on Sunday. It's gold or nothing for these guys.

I don't quite understand this logic. What about team USA? Why would they be any more motivated than the Finns? Are they here to 'win' bronze?

They are there to advance to the elimination round which they did so bronze would be an achievement for them.

While I don't buy it that Finland could not be motivated for the bronze game, I guess the logic here is that given USA's roster, even the bronze would be an achievement for them. For Finland it would be a minor disappointment, especially given the team's prowess this far.

Yet Finland was ranked the 3rd best team going into the tournament, so in that sense bronze would not really be a disappointment but exactly where they stand.

I must say, it's pretty funny reading Finns saying that bronze would be a disappointment, the players might not be motivated and so on after years of reading about how Canadian players must care about bronze medal games.

LOL funny how that works...

Bronze medal would be very good medal from this tournament, even I really hope there are extra gear for Finns to overcome Russia. I still doubt that. Team Finland is really good one (that haven't been always the case when winning medals, anyway, btw.), but so are Russia and Canada too.

I don't recognize that there exists really risks for not enough motivated Team Finland for competing seriously to win bronze medals, if losing Russia and feeling disappointment (naturally) for that.

It's been long road for Finns to take some lessons, and some things are inscribed to Finnish mentality. I tend to think Finland is one of best teams historically in finding motivation again after lost final spots, and still winning that Bronze. (someone can search hard stats/and facts about this...)

Bull$%^t.

We both know Canada could care less about Bronze.

If you think Finland cares so much about bronze in the Skoda cup, just look at 2012 and 2013. The Finns were hungry for gold and didn't play their hearts out in those bronze games after disappointing semi final losses. In 2016, it's gold or nada. You must be mistaking Finland for Switzerland or Slovakia? I fully understand that Finns will try their best in olympic bronze games, but even that attitude I feel will be replaced with the new kids on the block.

So, I'll go ahead and say it. This new golden young generation of Laine, Pulju, Aho, Risto and co, are not looking to win bronze games in any tournament that they play in. It's time for this Finnish humbleness to be replaced with Laine type cockiness. GOLD OR GO HOME.

That being said, I'm still afraid that Russia might be too good tomorrow :)

So... you agree with me. I, and pretty much every other Canadian, know that Canadians players all know that bronze isn't acceptable or a worthwhile prize. The funny thing has been hearing other people, Finns chief among them, claiming that it isn't true. But lo and behold once Finland starts getting a bit of talent, yet not close to Canada's level for now, suddenly their attitudes toward bronze start to look a lot like the attitudes that they always denied Canadians had.

Jack, my opinions don't represent the 5.5 million Finns in Finland. I'm just an individual here voicing my own views. And yes, I do agree with you, so please drop the condescending attitude. Canada is the best in Hockey, and only plays for Gold. Anybody who doesn't agree with that is out to lunch.

It's about The pride, not a color of a medal. It's hard to think that Finns would really stop playing if there are still games left.

Maybe that "humbleness" has some aspects we really should get rid of (at least what comes to hockey), but not in way that the national team degenerates back to juniors and behave like such if they've lost the grip to the Gold, and change to win it.

Finland as a country would not be on the World Map with that kind attitude.
