Wainwright is hard to place for me -- I think he's still very capable of good starts, but if he's not on his game, he's become extremely hittable. I think I'd avoid him against stacked lineups, but he's also good enough that he's capable of tossing these concerns out the window.
I ended up winning Carlos Gomez at $6. Possibly an overinvestment, but here's hoping he goes on a tear. My real decision will come whenever Matz returns: I'll have to let go of one player, and decide first if I want to roll with 5 pitchers as my bench, or keep 1 extra batter, which is how I have it now.
My decision will almost definitely come down to cutting one of Daniel Norris, Morton, Bell, or Gomez. I can only cut Gomez if Marte gets CF eligibility, which he should. My thought right now is that I will cut Morton if he isn't lighting things up for Houston, and then Bell if everything else holds, unless Gomez just doesn't hit at all. My preference is to have 5 pitchers on the bench, but in April it can be useful to have the extra batter for all the off days, and Morton is clearly the most objectively weak player in the mix.
Norris I want to be careful with. He'll probably burn me sometimes, but even last year when he was so-so and giving up too many HRs, he still struck out so many people that I think he could be in for a huge fantasy breakout, so I'd rather let him stay on the bench until I'm proven wrong about that than cut him loose so early in the season and regret it. Bell could also be in for a pretty big breakout if he hits consistently again and adds some more power, but 1B is pretty deep and I have Goldschmidt there already.
Figures, haha - I saw that. Gomez is probably going to go 0-for for a while as karma for overreaction to opening day.
I think a lot comes down to how right my huge guess on Morton turns out to be. If he's good, then I'd be cutting a batter anyways when Matz comes back: either Bell or Broxton/Gomez, or I guess Buxton on a real outside shot, but I don't want to bail on him this early. I'm confident I can get Broxton back, but I should also take a look at schedule strength and maybe make the decisions more around temporary streaming.
And... of course, Gomez hit 6th yesterday.
Considering trading Braun, Hanley and Nola for Votto and Carpenter (OBP league). I just feel like Braun and Hanley are so injury prone, and Votto is the GOAT come fantasy playoff time -- he always ramps it up in the second half of the season. Would you pull the trigger? The rest of my pitchers are pretty solid:
Kershaw, Strasburg, Taillon, Cobb, Wacha, Wright, Ryu and Urias.
Glad I picked up Mazara before last night. Also very keen on grabbing Margot...thoughts?
Who would you cut? He's going to be hitting first or second in the lineup, so he''s worth a shot.
I actually made a mistake. I was thinking Mitch Haniger. Probably a pitcher...Wheeler most likely.
Anybody have very deep RP guys that they like? Not really thinking guys who could end up as closers, but more guys who will pitch relatively often and get lots of Ks, maybe holds (which my league counts).
Possibly overreacting, but thinking I might cut Nate Jones loose and look somewhere else. Maybe Knebel, Nicasio, Hudson, but I'd rather not stack too too many Pirates (I already have Rivero, who scored me tons of points this week, and I think he'll be the "cleanest" in terms of dominating for fantasy numbers). Another option would be to grab Michael Lorenzen.
Benoit named closer. On the topic of Jeanmar, Drew Silva was speculating on Twitter that maybe the Phillies will want to keep Neris flexible. Picked up Joaquin Benoit in case.
