IMO Grier wanted to add some size & toughness on his team to help protect Celebrini & Smith who can also keep up. Ostapchuk can take faceoffs, he hits, he's responsible defensively, he can play on the PK & play C or LW, he's very versatile with a decent skillset & can help any team.

I just watched his presser out of curiosity. This is what he had to say:

- Strenght down the middle is important.
- Views Ostapchuk as his 3rd line center.
- Move was made with his vision of his roster going forward.
- Big, fast, physical.
- Bring an element that they were missing on their team with toughness and reliable defensively.
- Compared him to Adam Lowry.
- Where would the Jets be without Adam Lowry?

To paraphrase. Centers are your most important forwards. They need that depth down the middle. He’s strong/physical, will protect his teammates, which is an element they were missing. They have a long term plan and Ostapchuk fits that long term plan.

I’d add… centers are more valuable than wingers and wingers are way easier to acquire and /or replace.

Ok, so that gives him an incentive to trade the guy, but apparently other teams didn't realize he was available? If SJ decided to trade him, fine, put him to market rather than just let Staois pester you until you snap...

Right, they have a potential reason to consider a trade, but not to limit partners to just the guy calling every 5 mins....

Edit: Or maybe I'm mixing up the trades, was it Cozens other teams weren't aware was available?
Different leagues, but the Dallas Maverick's just did this with Donkic. Moved a top 3-5 player in the league without offering him around.

This makes no sense to me, there was no need for SJ to trade him, like, did Grier just crack and trade him to make the calls stop???
Alex Anthopoulos used to do that when he was GM of the Blue Jays. Just harass the other team till they relent. I used to have a dog that would bark all night at a cat stuck in a tree till the cat would just give up on life.

“Steve and I had some conversations throughout (deadline day) and we had some back-and-forth,” Grier said. “It was a difficult trade on both sides. It was good to work with Steve on it.

“But it probably took so long because of what we think about Fabian and what they felt about (Ostapchuk). Sometimes when you have those things it’s not easy for either side to part with a player. It took a little bit of time, but we worked it out.”

Grier said he had no plans to trade Zetterlund, but felt that Ostapchuk could help solidify the middle of the ice in San Jose.

“I didn’t come into this deadline thinking about trading him,” Grier said. “These are kinds of things that happen and come up. We just felt like it was something that we needed to do as a fit for our roster construction moving forward, to add a 21-year-old centre (Ostapchuk).

“You’ve got to be strong down the middle and this kind of gives us something a little different with size, pace and physicality. Ottawa is ahead of where we are and (Zetterlund) fits into where they are as far as winning now.”

Cozens only played in Buffalo before Ottawa

It's Cousins who played in Florida...
lol you aren’t keeping up to the conversation.
Frightened assumed someone was talking about Cozens but they were talking about Zetterlund. Frightened thought Cozens had to fly in from Buffalo to get here, and was told he was in Florida at the time, and had to fly to Ottawa from there.
Had nothing to do with Cousins.

ok lol really looked like you were mixing up Cousins and Cozens

Nice coincidence though since Cozens was in Buffalo and Cousins in Florida last year. I have seen people mixing up both names

I have seen that way too often ,
but probably going to happen even more now, unfortunately.

Ostapchuk is a guy the Sharks would love in the system.

He’s as good a bottom 6 C prospect as you could ask for.

Big, moves well, will be able to chip in 25-30 points, will be able to be used against other teams top lines.

Sharks have Celebrini, Eklund, Smith in their top 6, they have Chernyshov and Musty as skilled guys coming up. Ostapchuk fills a large role for a team already brimming with offensive ability and skill.

I agree. Ostapchuk is younger too, fits their timeline better. This seems like a win-win trade.

Props on Staios to really act like we value Ostapchuk highly to get such a good deal on Zetterlund.

Dorian would have showed all his cards and the other GM would use it against him.
The difference between Dorion and staios and just about everything both of them did (so far) is night and day.
It’s so crazy. From total incompetence/laughing stock/worst of all time to total competence.
It can’t be overstated how terrible Pierre Dorion was at his job.

Staois making hockey trades. Dorion making trades to brag about and then lie or hide when they blow up in his face.

I think we fleeced them.

Grier overthinking it, counting an unhatched chicken, and not even considering any other offers.

I'd be calling for his head if he was the sens GM.

Ostapchuk is going to be a very good player for SJ, we don't know yet what we have in Zetterlund. we'll find out soon enough.

So Ostapchuk is going to be very good player for SJ without having played for them and scoring just 4 points for us in 40 games and is unknown really at 21. But an established 20 goal guy for couple seasons we don't know yet?

loool how interesting. Aragorn, did you just look at 6'3 vs 5'11?

Grier is going to look smart with this deal and it should be a great trade for both teams in a perfect world.

Ostapchuk is criminally underrated here.

I’m excited for Zetterlund but let’s be real Ostapchuk is a great young player.

It was a hockey trade and Sens could afford to deal a center and SJ was looking to add one.

I agree. Ostapchuk is going to be a player. Might have better offensive toolbox than Nick Paul. Lowry is also a great comparable.

Grier knows what he's saying and doing.

Zetterlund can really explode here with us too if he meshed with Stutzle and give us 30/30.

If Grier thinks Ostapchuk will be good enough to be a long term 3C I wish him all the best.

Ostapchuk has loads of potential but the guy didn't show much in terms of being a shut down guy or scoring. He was as effective in ice as Patrick Brown

Knowing Ostapchuks history and path I think he is intentionally building himself up from the very bottom. He is not one to take shortcuts and I think he is very happy to take a slow and steady approach to developing himself into a valuable and well rounded NHLer. This to me means focusing on safe and reliable defensive play, limiting giveaways and mistakes, staying above the puck at all costs... Nothing flashy and points are probably the last thing he is concerned about in his rookie season.

I think this also applies to his physical play. He could be more physical but he is not going to take himself out of the play or risk penalties at this stage. He is passing on some of his physical potential in favour of just keeping things simple. Probably doesn't believe in ruffling too many feathers at this stage either, just not his style to come in seeking attention.

As he progresses, gets more comfortable and builds trust I think he will begin methodically layering more and more elements into his game and he will be way more noticeable. I anticipate thats when he starts showing more of his speed, starts playing more physical, will fight more and and taking more chances offensively.

I have this theory because of all the accounts of how coachable, hard working and responsible he is. I think he is abundantly aware of what kind of player he projects as and that his best path at getting there is by slow and steady progress.
