The Metro is bonkers right now.

Wow, fantastic. I was hoping we'd get him as a semi realistic add (compared to some other players at least like Laine, Tank, or JT Miller), and he'd be perfect as a Nino replacement that delivers in the playoffs.

But for him to go to the metro on top of the other players our divisional rivals have gotten? Kind of an ouch. I'm curious what he'll get paid though.

Waddell should pull a Dallas and steal a winger at the last minute this offseason.

Re: Bear and allowed evidence in the Salary Arbitration hearing, I wonder if his camp considers that they can argue something under (ii) that would go a long way in their way?

(g) Evidence.

(i) Subject to the limitations set forth in subsection (iii) below, the parties
may present whatever witnesses, affidavits, documents and other relevant
evidence they choose to present at the hearing. The Salary Arbitrator, on
behalf of any party, or on his own behalf, may call witnesses or request
documents or other evidence as he deems necessary to resolve the dispute.
The Salary Arbitrator in his discretion shall be the judge of the relevancy
and materiality of the evidence offered and/or the weight, if any, to attach
to any evidence and shall not be bound by any formal legal rules of
evidence. All evidence shall be presented in the presence of all the
parties, unless a party is in default, having failed to appear for the hearing,
or has waived his right to be present. Statistical evidence asserted in a
party's affirmative case must be included in such party's brief in order to
be admissible.

(ii) The parties may offer evidence of the following:

(A) the overall performance, including National Hockey League
official statistics (both offensive and defensive), of the Player in
the previous season or seasons;
(B) the number of games played by the Player, his injuries or illnesses
during the preceding seasons;
(C) the length of service of the Player in the League and/or with the
Club;
(D) the overall contribution of the Player to the competitive success or
failure of his Club in the preceding season;
(E) any special qualities of leadership or public appeal not inconsistent
with the fulfillment of his responsibilities as a playing member of
his team;
(F) the overall performance in the previous season or seasons of any
Player(s) who is alleged to be comparable to the party Player
whose salary is in dispute; and
(G) The compensation of any Player(s) who is alleged to be
comparable to the party Player, provided, however, that in
applying this or any of the above subparagraphs, the Salary
Arbitrator shall not consider a Player(s) to be comparable to the
party Player unless a party to the salary arbitration has contended
that the Player(s) is comparable; nor shall the Salary Arbitrator
consider the compensation or performance of a Player(s) unless a
party to the salary arbitration has contended that the Player(s) is
comparable.

(iii) The following categories of evidence are inadmissible and shall not be
considered by the Salary Arbitrator:

(A) Any SPC the term of which began when the Player party to such
SPC was not a Group 2 Player;
(B) Any SPC entered into by an Unrestricted Free Agent, including
SPCs signed by Players after the Player's Club has exercised a
walk-away right pursuant to Section 12.10;
(C) The SPC of any Player who is not being offered as a comparable
Player to the party Player;
(D) Qualifying Offers made by the Club pursuant to Section 10.2(b);
(E) Any prior offers or history of negotiations between the Player and
the Club;
(F) Testimonials, videotapes, newspaper columns, press game reports
or similar materials;
(G) Any reference to actual or potential walk-away rights;
(H) Any award issued by a Salary Arbitrator as to which a Club
exercised its walk-away rights pursuant to Section 12.10;
(I) The financial condition of the Club or the League;
(J) References to a Club's Upper or Lower Limit, or to the Players'
Share;
(K) Any salary arbitration award issued in 2005-2006; or
(L) Any reference to any salary or other compensation information in
any salary arbitration opinion that took place prior to July 22,
2005. If any salary arbitration opinion issued prior to July 22,
2005 is cited as precedent, all references to any Player's Player
Paragraph 1 Salary or other compensation information will be
redacted.

(iv) In presenting the compensation of any Player offered as a comparable in a
brief, the first reference thereto shall be a complete breakdown by
component parts (clearly identified) of all such Player's compensation
figures in the same format as the Joint Exhibit.

Also, Bear did get COVID which was his malaise during the season. Some other guys were taxied in an ambulance while Bear was welded shut in a hotel room of a road city. I don't find actual rules on how the player contracting COVID-19 and the special transition rules regarding COVID-19 should effect on the salary arbitration, but it may be his camp has cooked up an argument over that.

Bear got racially abused after the 2021 playoffs and then got promptly traded away in straight-up exchange for Warren Foegele (July 28, 2021) whom EDM then immediately signed onto a 3 x 2.75M contract (July 31, 2021). That's evidence on what a player obviously considered Bear's comparable by two different NHL organizations gets paid (without even having played one game in EDM jersey) if they don't get racially abused by the EDM fans and traded away by the organization.

It may be his arguments are aimed more against EDM than us, we just happen to be the dancing partner (who arguably facilitated a bit in EDM's dealing with him).

Good for Palat but 5 is too long

Edit 5 x 6 million? NJ is screwing up their chances. As soon as the young start becoming stars these big contracts are going to kill their depth while the individual projections are tumbling .
They’re 17 under the cap…..

We pay Staal the same 6 mill to win face offs as our third line center…..but they’re killing their chances with Palat?

Actually I thought about the Vegas trade and future considerations and Canes maybe wanting to keep hold of its draft pick for the time being, because you need to have your own specific picks for offer sheet purposes... but, as our 2023 3rd went yesterday in the Burns trade, we are out of the OS business for the tiers that would need our 3rd, 1st-3rd, 1st-2nd-3rd, 1st-1st-2nd-3rd picks for compensation.

We could still do an offer sheet within the salary tiers of:

$1,386,490 or below (no compensation)
Over $2,100,742 to $4,201,488 (2nd)
Over $10,503,720 (four 1sts)

I know a lot of teams made a lot of moves yesterday, but there are very few obvious spots for improvement left in Carolina’s lineup right now:

2C is still a concern on whether Kotkaniemi can step up to that role.
Weirdly for this franchise, there’s a RW glut now (Jarvis, Necas, Fast, Kase, Teravainen plays his off side often, Svech plays off side occasionally)

In general, what do they do with Necas? Is he on Staal’s wing? 4th line?? Or trade bait? I still believe he’s going to rebound from last season and a trade would be a mistake but is there space for him now?

Burns will definitely help the PP but I wonder if he’s a true QB. Burns has a good # of PP assists but are they slap shots with rebounds or true passes?
Does Teravainen QB the PP?
Can Burns play the D required of Slavin, or will the pairings need to be juggled?

Can Andersen and Raanta avoid getting hurt at the same time?

Now that the dust has settled I'm glad we got alot of things for nothing but are we harder to play against? I like Burns and a better point shot may help the PP but still think we lost some grit from our forwards. I can see Patches bouncing around the lineup when he's not scoring. Hope I'm wrong.

Centers have more value.

The point is both Hamilton and Palat will begin their declines soon which will be at or near the time their young talent rises and is ready to compete. They will have those 2 big contracts weighing them down. Those two signings should be done if you are looking to win now, which they aren’t at that level.

The thing that worries me about Patches is that he apparently mostly generates his offense off the rush, and our system doesn't really support that so much. Hopefully Rod can learn to adapt a bit, as Necas would also benefit IMO.
In all fairness, that's because we generally suck on the rush (when was the last time we scored on a breakaway?)...we usually overpass or hold too long or miss the open net

Aren't we one of the teams that create the most odd man situations? Aren't our defensemen some of the best in clearing the puck to a player in an attacking position?

Our problem has long been an inability to finish, but we always have our chances. Patches is basically the perfect add for what we needed.

IMO, What we are lacking, especially with Trocheck and Nino moving on, is guys that go to the net, score from the dirty areas and have the size/strength to withstand the physical play that comes with it. I’m sure that’s why they went after Marchment so aggressively.

Patches isn’t that guy. Kase isn’t that guy and wouldn’t be able to hold up. Staal and Fast do it. Svechnikov can, but that’s not best use of his skill set.

Maybe Kotkaniemi can, but that’s an unknown.

I’m already bracing for the “we couldn’t come to agreement so moved him” quotes from Waddell.

Good questions. I think the team has some flexibility here with Burns.

Burns had 44 assists last year so he’s at least got some skill at distributing the puck. Hopefully the Canes learned from the Hamilton (big shot strategy) and TDA (walk the line, pretty passing strategy) phases of their PP enough to mix it up. If Pacioretty has a decent one-timer I think you put him at the right circle, Burns up top and Teravainen on the half-wall with Svechnikov and Aho either at the net or on the goal-line. Talent is there, just need better execution.

The things I’m concerned about:

1) Who now will take the RS faceoffs? I think eventually Necas could be that guy, but his future is up in the air at the moment. Pederson? Maybe, but he’s not going to get PP time.

2) The Gardiner situation. If he’s back to his old self then that’s fine I guess, but I severely doubt he can make it through an entire season. They need him off roster and they need a 3rd pair LD in my estimation.

3) The 3rd pair. Who out of Bear/Chatfield/
Coghlan/Keane/Gardiner/yet to be acquired LD will make up the 3rd pair? I probably differ in opinion from most of the board when I think that they want to keep Bear around and I have him pencilled in as the 3rd pair RD. They have a glut of 6/7 RD types, not LD.

I am very much on record saying that I'm not fully bought into KK being 2C this year.

That being said, when he was playing upper line minutes at C last year when Tro was hurt, his ability to get his ass in front of the net and just park himself there was noticeable. That's one of the things I actually wouldn't worry about with him at C going forward.

Waddell's ability to find reasonable short term solutions every offseason is unheard of. I wonder how much of what the Canes have done is just confidence that they can find an answer, so they don't have to panic and end up giving Trochek 7 years or Campbell 5 years or Hamilton 8x8 years, etc...

A 116 point team with no poison pill contracts on the roster is pretty remarkable.

I'm excited about our defense(I mean it's pretty easy to build one when you have Slavin/Pesce...but still).

Shout out to Skjei as well. That move looked pretty questionable at the time(lots of roasting for giving up a 1st) but he has really come into his game here. I think Gardiner will be fine on the 3rd pair but we have options as well.

Can't wait to watch Burns ripping shots from the point.
