Teravainen-Aho-Jarvis
Pacioretty-Kotkaniemi-Necas
Svechnikov-Staal-Kase
Martinook-Drury-Fast
Noesen

Slavin-Burns
Skjei-Pesce
Gardiner-Chatfield
Coghlan

Andersen
Raanta

Bear dealt to Seattle for a pick.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Bear’s QO was 2.4. Can the arbitrator award him less than that?

According to Lempo, they could, if I read his post correctly

Well, I tried posting that, but @Gocanes0506 had had it already covered.

But, only in club-elected arbitration the club is restricted to offer no less than 85 % of the final year of the previous contract. Bear's is a player-elected arbitration, so the club can try and lowball him how much they like. The Arbitrator then finds the truth and the fair salary somewhere in between the opening bids.

But: the big part of evidence is the SPCs of comparable players. Bear will probably point out to Bear 2020-22 as a comparable player. I don't know whether such argument can be ignored. It was a weird year.

I think Rod has surgically joined Staal and Fast at this point but I like that direction

Looking at this, I don't think the Canes need to trade Gardiner, someone who would require a pick to dump. As proven by the Canes moves today, the organization finds a huge amount of value in adding salary via trade, not dumping it. Dealing Bear for a pick will be enough cap space to lock down Necas.

For me the question at this point is Gardiner's health as much or more than his cap hit.

The first question is: what kind of player will he be after the surgery? It would be great if he ends up being the player we thought we were getting when we signed him, and I guess that's possible. Doesn't seem worthwhile to spend too much time speculating on that without any of the detailed medical info the Borg has that will hopefully allow them to make a reasonably accurate projection.

The second question is: what are the chances of him staying healthy for most of the season, and what are the implications if he does go down? Is it enough to have someone like Lajoie ready to step into a 4th line role, could one of Chatfield or Coghlan effectively play their off side for 3rd pair minutes, or would the Borg be comfortable filling that spot by trade mid season if Gardiner did go down?

Gotta believe the Borg's calculations around those factors will in large part influence the decisions about Gardiner.

Alternatively, you can play Necas or Kase on their off-hand. If you go full strong-hand, though, you would want either Patches or Svech on the 3rd line.
What chance of Necas going back to center? I just don't see how you go with KK as the second line center unless there is a clear plant to upgrade in season.

the third pair still scares the mess out of me. If Gardiner isnt healthy, we trade for another defender? probably someone they dont want though.

even if he is good to go, that pair isnt good. hopefully everyone stays healthy.

You mean the guy who was 6th on the team in 5v5 goal scoring in limited minutes shouldn’t have a spot in the top 6?

I think the 2nd and 3rd are going to have pretty equal time anyway, so numbering 2C vs 3C isn’t going to be a big deal. Staal’s line will likely get harder matchups and more defensive zone starts though.

Hey, maybe he busts out and makes everyone look smart in Carolina.
