Frankly, it appears the Canes are playing hardball with Marty. Not sure I agree with the tactic, but whatever. Not sure what their plan with him is. Maybe a lowball multi-year deal? Or just sticking with the QO which would definitely piss him off. The Kase signing feels a bit like a f*** you to him.
Suck less?

He's a depressed asset.

If Necas didn't want us to play hardball with him, maybe he should have not sucked donkey ass for the second half of this season.

I'm not sure what Necas can realistically expect after last season's disastrous finish. 2 year bridge deal has made the most sense to me for both sides for months now. $4m max aav

So who’s got their own picks and $4-5M in space to give Necas an OS?
Carolina can still fit a 4.2M offer, which is good as the compensation is only a 2nd round pick.

Can someone go $5M-6.3M? Whoever misses out on JG would have space. Calgary and the NYI don't appear to have the 3rd round pick available for an offer sheet, though.

The kicker for me was when he said he wanted to play Center in the end of year interviews. Like, nah man, you gotta focus on getting back to being even somewhat respectable on the ice before you start talking about a position switch to a higher impact role.

Like I get it, maybe he wants to be a center going forward, but he was so god awful at wing the second half of the season that he was legitimately getting 4th line minutes because we just couldn't put him out there in any other situations. Hearing about how you have aspirations for effectively a job promotion after that kind of performance is a little..... questionable

I'm one of the few here (only?) who thinks Necas fits better as a C so I don't really have an issue with this or with him wanting to play C in general but I get what you're saying.

Assuming no other big moves I think JK and Necas will compete for 2C in camp and preseason, and I honestly give Necas a leg up in the race. I like JK's prospects longer term but his skating is just such an issue for a top 6 player and especially with the likely linemates' skillsets. Rod won't go for it but I really think our best move is moving Staal to 4th line defensive matchup/PK specialty minutes only and JK at 3C with Necas at 2C.

I haven't seen Necas at C enough to judge his play there, but he's fast, and if he back checks with that speed, that would be a big help.
