I don't really buy that narrative. I think that they wanted KK for a long time. You don't give an 8 year extension if you didn't have long-term plans with him in the organization. The offer sheet strategy was unusual, but I think that they always wanted the actual player and the Aho offer sheet gave them a really good excuse to do it.
we really screwed the pooch if we torpedoed our off-season in order to wait 6 weeks to offer sheet a dude with 34 points as a career high. Im not going to say they didnt like Kotkaniemi but that is too long to wait into an offseason to execute your plan.

I think you’re mixing him up with de Haan. Gardiner was signed on September 6th that year.
maybe so. i stand corrected.

If you can't evaluate it yet, why are you crowing about it, then?

I'm not crowing about it. I'm giving a general overview about what the Canes did last offseason, as far as timeline is concerned. My opinion is neutral about Kotkaniemi except about the fact that I believe that it was a futures move and not a right-now move, and that many are jumping the gun too quickly about whether the move is good or bad.

It was clearly plan E or F. They tried signing others, they were trying to sign Saad late for one.

They tried to trade for Kotkaniemi before the offer sheet as well per Waddell. The situation was unique in that there was cap space that likely couldn't be banked with Gardiner going on LTIR, so they decided to use it to procure Kotkaniemi rather than lose it.

Whether it works is a long-term question, and the jury is definitely out on whether it ends up more like the Trocheck trade or the Gardiner signing.

Manson staying in Colorado may make Girard available. I only say that for conversation not that I want him to be a hurricane.

I hope he's one that just shows up, but his late blooming does bother me. His skating sucks.

One thing that everybody tends to forget about this FO is that they often like to keep a bunch of open cap space well into August and September, leading fans like us to whine and complain about the team "doing nothing", and then they strike. That's how Kotkaniemi became a Hurricane, actually.
?

Kotkaniemi was like Plan D after they struck out on Saad and couldn't get the Blues to agree to Tarasenko for Gardiner and pocket lint.
