F Samu Tuomaala - Jukurit Liiga/U20 (2021, 46th, PHI)

He was drafted by Sudbury in the CHL import draft, can he play there or he lost his elegibilty due to playing in the AHL? Played today on the fourth line, yesterday he was scracthed. Looks like he is stuck playing in Finland.

Will be an interesting year for him. The Flyers hired Sami Kapanen specifically to work on his development and the early returns are not promising. We shall see where it goes from here but its a big year for him.

What do you mean by "stuck playing in Finland"? Nobody is forcing Tuomaala to stay in Finland. In fact, he should have obviously gone to play in OHL, but I guess either him, his agent or somebody else was a bit too ambitious and rushed him to Liiga.

The dumbass Flyers let him stick around in the AHL way too long post-draft just because he looked good in rookie camp and he then found himself healthy scratched in the AHL to start his Draft +1. He should have been sent back to Karpat immediately but they waited until November and he seemed to be behind the 8 ball from then on out.

I don't know for sure if Tuomaala is a "bad prospect", but clearly last season for this guy was full of bad mistakes.

Lets's recap:
1.) Scored 31 points in 30 games in his draft year in U20 Sm-Sarja. Ok point totals, but clearly not "too good" for juniors.
2.) For some reason starts the next season in AHL. Unsurprisingly fails.
3.) Doesn't go to OHL (for some reason)
4.) Gets loaned to Vaasan Sport. A team that isn't exactly know as a young player development team. Fails to make impact.
5.) Gets loaned to Jukurit, who at the time were among the top teams in Liiga. Unsurprisingly, fails to get icetime or make much of an impact.
6.) Even after failing to make an impact in Liiga, doesn't go to OHL.
7.) Starts the next season with Jukurit mostly as a 13th forward or 4th line. (WE ARE HERE CURRENTLY)

Yeah, I don't really get his reluctance to go to the AHL but i'm not surprised the raging morons running the Flyers failed to impress upon him how good of an idea that would be.

Tuomaala was demoted to Jukurit's u20 team yesterday

He has played two u20 games so far with no points, but averaging about 20 minutes of ice time and had 17 shots between the two games.

Has 0 goals and 1 assist in 5 games at U20 Sm-Sarja. Heading towards Bustville.
Very low hockey IQ for even Liiga level. Very much about just fast skating and a pretty good shot. Unfortunately they will not take anyone further than Mestis level if the hockey IQ is as bad as his is. I will already declare it as well: he is going to bust big time.

Isn't that what coaching does?

When a player hasn’t good hockey IQ for the highest level, they can maybe learn slightly to become better with their decision making. But it’s still very little what can be done if there isn’t the quick and accurate ability to process the game, as well with having good vision. These type of players practically never make it to the top level, even how good coaching they might get.

Would agree if Tuomaala were 22 or 23 years old. At 19 it would seem there is plenty of time for those areas to be addressed.

I watched the most recent Jukurit U20 game against Pelicans U20 (Jukurit won 5-4 OT) and Tuomaala mostly looked like "just another guy", which is concerning since a guy with his draft position and age should be dominating at that level. Heard the coach shout twice during the game "Samu skate!", and it did seem like Tuomaala wasn't skating as hard as he could a lot of time. Also had a really dumb play where he slew-footed a guy. Refs missed it and didn't call a penalty. Pelicans players went to shove and have a talk with Tuomaala after the whistle.

Right now I don't think Tuomaala is a Liiga-caliber player, and he should play the remaining season either in U20 Sm-Sarja or in Mestis.

Off-topic, but 2024 draft eligible Topias Hynninen looked really good.

After watching today's Czechia - Finland U20 game I have zero hope for Tuomaala to become an NHL player. He's actually quite useless and bad. Huge bust. Should've been a 5th round pick or later.

Tuomaala has 19 goals and 33 points in 18 games for Ketterä in Mestis (Finnish second tier league). But Mestis is a pretty crap league, so doesn't actually mean much.

After being drafted he has 1 goal and 3 points in 36 games in Liiga. That's brutally bad production for a second round pick. In games I've watched, he has mostly been useless and invisible. Sometimes occasionaly makes a nice play but about 95% of the time he's just invisible.

Tuomaala is a good example that great tools don't mean much if the player is dumb and doesn't actually know how to use their tools in game situations.

I think you're the only one that even tracks his progress anymore lol. Flyers fans are already resigned to the fact that he's yet another awful pick by Chuckles the Clown Fletcher.

He looked pretty alright in the Jukurit games I saw. I think he is a Liiga level player next season. At least if it is not with Kärpät as he is not 30+.

I'm not sure what games you've been watching.

Flyers fans may be worse than many Devils fans when it comes to burying their own prospects and whining about the front office.

The way people are killing a player that just turned 20, particularly one as skilled as Tuomaala, doesn't make much sense.

Prospects develop at their own pace (see Owen Tippett as an example).

Where will this guy play next year?
Today's DobberProspects article says he's expected to play for Leigh Valley but that could just be an assumption

Thank lord for Sami. Tuomaala looked really nervous and perhaps a bit insecure? I hope he can help his game as well. Sami was a great skater and Tuomaala actually has some tools regarding the skating aspect.
Has anyone seen him in camp?

I understand the language doesn't seem to be his strength and that contributes to him getting nervous, not old Puljujärvi level but still.

Ya its probably weird sitting there not always having the right words to say and everyones just staring at you. His english has gotten better and theres going to be a ton of young guys in the Phantoms this year so hopefully it makes the transition easier. Hes such a good skater, we need some wheels
