F Rodion Amirov (2020, 15th, TOR) - tragically passed away due to brain tumor 8/14/23

It was a toss between Amirov and Podkolzin, but Amirrov is flashier, while Pod will remain that player who will get more recognition from people who actually watch and understand hockey and remain "controversial" for more casual fans who like themselves stat lines.

I actually watched and thought Amirov was the best skater in games 1 & 2.

Amirov is the flashy forward with skating and moves and the shot and really, really good at that. Podkolzin does so many things that might go unnoticed. There is a lot of Datsyuk in his game. Even the sneaky steals that lead to a goal. Podkolzin is effective in every zone and extremely valuable as a player you can plug in everywhere from PK to PP, from playmaker to net presence.

The thing that made Datsyuk "Datsyuk" is you didn't have to choose between the flashy forward and the 200 foot player who does all the little things. If those are the things that characterize Podkolzin, you're basically describing a Bo Horvat type player.

Podkolzin might not have the flashy datsyukian moves yet, but Datsyuk did not have them at 19 either. While as I ponited out in the Podkolzin thread he did a datsyukian move in the SO and he does those pretty datsyukian things on the offence too.: keeping posession, stealing pucks, feeding his linmates with perfect feeds while under pressure. In fact Podkolzin right now is way more physically adequate than Datsuyk was at that age. Datsyuk's physicality came way later. The thing about Datsyuk is that he always worked on his game adding something new every year. Though while being a flashy forward for his dangles and vision Datsyuk never was that fast flying Bure kind of guy(and that is what Amirov should be aiming at). All that is not to say that Podkolzin will replicate Datsyuk perfectly. He is just a similar type of player. How high he can rise will depend on all the usual factors: his natural skill, hard work, attitude, mental toughness and a bit of luck with his surroundings.

Yeah, I guess what I'm trying to say is Datysuk had a fairly atypical development path. He was a late bloomer and was not really a physical specimen and played in complete obscurity well past his draft eligible age, so it's difficult to use his career stages as a reference for other prospects, or single out particular elements to his game, since he did everything. And like you said, he always kept getting better and better, and that's not a trend we see with very many hockey players. Kucherov is another guy who seemed to always get better and better and not quite have a ceiling. Amirov's been compared to him in terms of flashiness and skillset, so hopefully he follows in this grand Russian tradition.

Podkolzin was the 10th overall pick in 2019. Amirov was the 15th overall in 2020.

If Podkolzin wasn't better, with an extra year of development, that would be a disappointing outcome, for the Canucks. Podkolzin is a very good player, and Canucks should be thrilled with him. That Amirov is even in the discussion, should be enough for Leafs fans. Fans of hockey, should really enjoy these two, and Askarov at the WJC, it should be a good show.

In the end, it doesn't even matter who is better at this point, as they still have some room to grow, before they are significant contributors in the NHL.... The more quality players there are, the better the league is...

Yea I don’t know how this became a who’s better argument. Both have their strength and weaknesses. I’m excited about Amirov potential development and I’m sure Canuck fans are excited about Pod’s advanced game.

They just both played in Karjala Cup on the same team, competing for ice time with one another so their games were being discussed with respect to one another. It hasn't been apparent that any Canucks fans have been in here, but @Atas2000 just made a remark about them that shows he has a preference to Pod's game which is fine. Hasn't really been much of an argument between who's better.

Amirov and Podkolzin are both 2001 birth-dates. They really are the same year. Podkolzin is born in the last quarter of draft eligibles for 2019 (June 24th 2001) , whereas Amirov is born in the first quarter of 2020 draft eligibles (October 2nd 2001).

Not trying to get involved in this pissing match, but they should essentially be viewed as the same age. They came from the same country, and are born only about 3 months apart in the same calendar year. The NHL draft date is really just an arbitrary number due to when prospective players will legally be adults for the start of training camp.

pretty soon a pissing match is going to break out as a consequence of posters chiming in wondering why there is a pissing match while there wasn't one
