Speculation: 2024/25 Trade Rumours, Speculation etc Thread

Soooo , 100,000,000 Canadian gets you 70,000,000 million US imagine throwing roughly 40,000,000 dollars out the window like Chipman and company are right now. Man that would suck.
They buy foreign currency long in advance and have access to it at different rates than the general public. Revenue sharing is also based on USD, and any further expansion fees will be, too. It hurts a bit but it’s not crippling.

Ya i kinda thought the Jets would buy US money in advance , i try to do that and I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Maybe Canada should adopt the US dollar as our currency?
There would be positives and negatives.

We would have zero control over our economic environment, but have more stability with our number 1 trade partner.

If you look at the 2008 economic crash - canadas system and policies created an environment where we didn’t even feel it. Our dollar was like up to 1.15!

Now if you look at the most recent 9 years, ahem, economic policies, umm, we’re not as effective.

There would definitely be substantial risks as a sovereign nation.

A player that hasn't played a game in the NHL is an overpay for a center that has played in 334 games and has 193 points?
I think an organization needs to have confidence in their assessment of their top prospects, even before they've been tested in the NHL. Consider Samberg, who is now performing as a core anchor on the Jets' D. He was projected to be a shutdown D from his college days, and that's what he is. I think Salomonsson has the same potential to be a top-4 D with more puck-moving ability. If so, he's a very valuable asset, partly because he's a RHD and partly because he'll be inexpensive for his first few seasons.

That said, if the Jets are convinced that Cozens can rebound to be a bona fide 2C with offensive impact, they might justify the cost. But I'd bet they'd look at trying to move other assets before Salomonsson. The Sabres might want a young RHD but I doubt they'll find a team willing to trade a top-end RHD prospect.

That’s the gateway to becoming the 51st state.

Jets are going to be in a cap crunch they need their elc so yes. Cozens is a middling top 6 player, Salo could be great.

I'm sorry Mort but I am not sure Salomonsson is even a top 100 prospect in the NHL right now. He's on the border there. We like our own guys, and we definitely need the prospect given the state of our defense. But Cozens is going to get a good return if he gets put on the market. Easier to say no deal. The Sabres would not add.

No deal then.

I am hoping that during the break that chevy is working with both Pionk and Ehlers agents. Hopefully he knows what's happening with those players.

Laughton is the topic du jour as it's a name we've now been attached to. For the right price and role I'm interested. As a relatively cheap add, and for bottom 6 depth I think it's a solid add for the playoffs.

Haven't really heard if they are available, but Bjorkstrand and McCann would be nice adds for the middle 6. (I think DRW204 mentioned them earlier) McCann would be nice if he can also play at C.

Not seeing realistic options for non rental D. I'm liking Voyageur's suggestion about Maatta more and more as a depth rental pickup.

if none of those Utah guys are available... Ryan Donato has been having a v solid year in Chicago. 16 5v5 goals this season show he's not been super-reliant on PP, that would be t-1st on the Jets. he's not getting goal scoring help from linemates when he's on the ice, as he's accounted for 55% of the on-ice goals (2nd in the NHL of fwds with 600+ mins).

i have not watched CHI at all this year so may have the most qualified opinion on him, however, from the stats he's been producing v well. pending UFA though. don't think he has the name value to cost a lot.

I actually really like those types of acquisitions (lesser name but at a lesser price), but provides a tangible boost (like Nino and Names).

Agree on Ehlers.

Pionks numbers and rising cap environment. I don’t think I want to resign him based on what he’ll command. If he takes a hometown discount in the 6 mill range maybe. But dude is gonna get paid - I feel like it’s best to let someone else take on that albatross contract. We should trade for a RD with a year left of term at the deadline. Start planning for the future.

That’s the gateway to becoming the 51st state.

Cozens could be a Vilardi type acquisition. Potential wise.

That being said he would be a weird deadline add. We don’t need a fixer upper at the deadline. We need a ROR or someone that can jump in the line up running.

Reasons I like Cozens:

1. Big, good skater
2. Young
3. Signed long term (set at 2C for a while)
4. Grew up in Whitehorse - might view Winnipeg winters as "tropical"

That said, he could be overpaid if he doesn't return to form (although his cap hit will seem smaller if the cap jumps like it should), and it's gonna cost us something meaningful to aquire him

I’m hoping Chevy stays away from a payday for Pionk…his current numbers are an outlier for his usual production and I seriously doubt he can do it again next year…most likely he falls back to his norm.
Personally, he’s the one I eye as needing to be replaced in the top 4. He’s playing above his norm, likely won’t be able to repeat it, and will demand too much on his next contract.
I would like to keep him for the remainder of the year and playoffs, but if we got an offer or chance at a good player, (ie Andersson, Pulock, Dobson) and Pionk was a must include in the deal, I’d probably move him.
Ehlers I’d love to see come back and I think the cap going up as much as it is and will, makes that the most likely outcome. Had it been a modest couple mil increase, I think Chevy would have been willing to let him go in favour of other contracts, but now, I think extending Ehlers will be a top priority…or at least I hope so

My biggest plus with him is he’s young and can hopefully be coached out of whatever it is currently holding him back. I’m hoping it’s a change of scenery thing…but all that aside, he’s a big risk at both his contract and what it would cost to get him.
Luckily I’m not the GM and don’t have to make that decision
