Also had a nice shootout goal to win the game for the Steelheads.
On pace for 130 points.

If you're the Hawks, how do you not run screaming to the podium if you find yourself in a position to draft this kid? He's exactly the kind of linemate Bedard needs to unlock that next level as a scorer while being a pretty decent finisher himself on top of the vision and playmaking.

Chicago would only need to add a strong two-way winger to take care of the defensive details and they'd have this generation's version of Secord-Savard-Larmer. Fun stuff.

That can’t be the solution. Because the knife will cut both ways. How will the CHL feel if both Medicine Hat’s Gavin McKenna and Brampton’s Porter Martone exit their player contracts to enroll at the University of Michigan as rumored? Every side has something to lose in this brave new world.

Wait, what?

I feel some are starting to question his skating. I don’t really see the problems there. He’s a big player. You have to assess him compared to other big players. Skates well for his size.

I think the bigger question is his playmaking. It’s definitely NHL top 6 level, but is he the type of player that will regularly create scoring opportunities for teammates? Because it’s kind of hard to drive a line if you can’t consistently set teammates up for chances. Being a very good complimentary player is useful, but it could limit his ceiling, so I think the true playmaking ability will be the question asked.

The McKenna one you can kind of buy why it might be useful for him to find a higher level of hockey in his draft season.

With Martone, are we sure he’s even going to be playing below the NHL level next season? I don’t think it’s a certainty he’s an NHL’er next season, so he might want to come up with a contingency plan for next season, but it seems like a maybe, at best, even if he wants to play at Michigan that he doesn’t end up playing in the NHL instead.

For him to play at Michigan he would also have to not sign his entry level and not even attempt to make the NHL which seems like not remotely realistic.

I sort of get why a player might consider that (a lot of the NCAA top 10 picks tend to go back to college for their D+1), but they haven’t even gotten him on campus yet. Seems like a lot to ask to get him to first sign with them away from the OHL and also forego the attempt to make the NHL immediately.
