F Porter Martone - Mississauga Steelheads, OHL (2025 Draft)

Steve Kournianos

@thedraftanalyst
You have followed the draft for many years, I have a hard time believing you never saw a top ranked prospect having a very rough weekend prior.

I always hear that good scout want to watch at least 15 games live to have a better sense on one player.

I’m a blogger and a hockey fan. I say what I want and don’t care much about what actual scouts do. Many of them follow me on twitter but I make it clear I want nothing to do with them or their practices. Watching hockey is too easy.

Did Martone kick your dog or steal your lunch?

Seriously I have never seen or heard of a scout with a more serious hard on against a player in all my time here.

I expect this sort of "analysis" from an Oiler or canuck diehard 12 year old fan talking about the other teams top prospects not a scout.

Not a scout. I’m a blogger and a fan who writes whatever the hell I want.

An impartial scout doesn't scout leagues or players and involve rape culture in their assessments any more then they would if they were scouting Russian players from Russian leagues and include the war in ukraine while doing so as a valid point they are making about that league or player.

It's clear he's not impartial based just on that...........it's personal. Impartial scouts don't include that stuff when simply evaluating.

Not a scout and never claimed to be. I as a fan have biases like everyone else except mine center on how players play. Sue me.

martone is not caught up in any sexual/rape allegations so mentioning that in any way.shape or form when discussing the player is irrelevant and has nothing to do with how he is or isn't playing.

And you know that.

@thedraftanalyst
He’s far from a “good scout.” He’s an outright fraud. This clown has never before posted a multiple-post targeted “report” and has the audacity to claim impartiality. Pathetically transparent.

Please with the personal attacks. Martone sucked this weekend -- it ain't that deep and the world keeps spinning. Are you his dad? A cousin? Hey, it's a tough line of work these kids are getting into, but they're going to get paid a lot of money and hear it way worse from tens of thousands more once they sign their first major deal.

Again, I never claimed to be a scout or wanted to be considered as one. You guys keep referring to me as one, which is beyond silly. It's a message board with lots of posters who watch prospects. And maybe being an NHL scout is a big deal to you guys, but to me, it seems like a pretty thankless job with long hours and shitty pay. I have no interest in that. Shit, I don't even claim to be an "online scout" or a "hobby scout". Literally watch hockey and write what I see because I'm retired and bored.

As such, I have no master and no desire to please anybody. I can literally write and say whatever I want and accept the fact that I'll have opinions that are sure to piss people off. I bet if I got to know you personally, you'd probably annoy me one way or another in one thing or another.

It's 2024. You either like it or you don't. If negative talk surrounding Martone pisses you off,I suggest finding a safe space elsewhere on this forum, because I think he's overrated and will continue to think that until he proves otherwise.

Steve here in the Martone thread vs Garl in the Michkov thread would be a heavyweight WWE bout of epicness on here.

The only substantial takeaway from several pages of crying and name-calling is that Martone is facing his first bout with draft-year adversity. The sample size will either grow in significance or become a minor side note, but that’s up to Martone. He has played poorly in consecutive games and his team got blitzed in the process.

This is sink or swim. If the negative trends continue, his draft stock will suffer. If he rebounds with stronger efforts, he’ll remain in the conversation for first overall.

Either way, a draft season is a story full of narratives, and this is one of them. Last year, Eiserman’s struggles for the NTDP at the November 5 Nations effectively killed any chance he’d go No. 1 overall. I went shift-by-shift for four games and wrote/tweeted about it, and in the process made Celebrini — a Canadian — my undisputed No. 1. So much for the idea that I have some personal vendetta against Martone because he’s Canadian. The kid just played like shit in all areas, simple as that.

Joakim Kemell got off to a blazing start to his draft year then leveled off while his teammate Brad Lambert had a forgettable everything in his, and as of today they are equals as quality AHL prospects on the cusp of long NHL careers. Calling out Martone’s struggles is part of the process just like it was for Lambert, who was killed on a weekly basis for having games like Martone had, albeit over a longer stretch.

Sink or swim.

Fraud says what? You overplayed your hand with the 35-post emotional hyper-criticism.

Correct only on the obvious - Martone is far from having locked up a top-3 or even top-5 pick, 20% into the season. “If he plays bad the rest of the year his draft stock will suffer.” Thanks for that incredible insight.

It's also cute he tries to use Celebrini as evidence of no bias when his pro NCAA/anti CHL one is super obvious. Calling the OHL a joke league when it's arguably the best developmental league in the world(either OHL or WHL) is certainly a opinion

Also really refuted any notion of bias by…coming to grips with the fact Celebrini (clear-cut 1OA) was a better prospect than Eiserman (deeply flawed 20th pick and could have fallen much further).

Calling a shift-by-shift analysis that hurt your feelings “Hyper-criticism” is a bad case of hyperbole. You didn’t like the result, so you resorted to ad hominem attacks. You’re projecting some kind of issue. Maybe if you published work beyond a message board, you’d get feedback on how the process actually works. But by all means, keep going. I’m enjoying this.

I rated Benson ahead of Smith, Drysdale ahead of Sanderson, and Wright ahead of Cooley.

“Last season, nearly 50 per cent of all players on active NHL rosters at the start of the campaign hailed from CHL franchises. The number of NHL players who had gone through NCAA programs was 33 per cent.”

How are you going to dismiss nearly half the players in the NHL just to push an agenda?

Let’s look at some of the best players of all time.

Gretzky (OHL)
Orr (OHL)
Lemieux (QMJHL)
Crosby (QMJHL)
Bossy (QMJHL)
McDavid (OHL)
Lafleur (QMJHL)
B Hull (OHL)
Roy (QMJHL)
Bourque (QMJHL)
Coffey (OHL)
Brodeur (QMJHL)
Yzerman (OHL)
Sakic (WHL)

Hell let’s look at one of if not the best American players of all time- Patrick Kane.

Oh what do you know- he played in the OHL and got drafted first overall from there.

Let’s stop saying the OHL and CHL sucks lmao you lose the little credibility you have with your blog when you say that.

Martone is great. He won’t be an all time talent I don’t think like the rest of these guys but if he is like a Matthew tkachuk- a perennial all star and a winner maybe, just maybe martone won’t be as horrible as you’re making him out to be. We can uplift players without bringing others down. You should learn how to do that you may get more views on your blog. Nobody’s saying he’s better than Hagens- only that he is making it interesting along with the other 2 OHL guys where for the longest time people treated as Hagens Tier 1, everybody else tier 3.

This year the mock draft shows 6 CHL players going in the top 10 according to tankathon.com. 16 players (half of the first round) going just in the first.

8 Americans in the first round. 2 in the top 10. Also of those American players Will Moore may show up to Barrie here this year or next and there is also rumours of Muskegon and Youngstown potentially joining the OHL in the near future. (So you’d be losing Adam Benak and Luka Radiojevic from that list)

CHL has always been the best and they will continue being the best at producing NHL talent.

Facts are the facts

I think you're missing the point of the OHL debate - all of your CHL examples are historic and the "50% of active" figure will be most relevant to 8-10 years ago, when the average player was drafted. Steve's point is that in the last 6 or so years, the OHL has gotten weaker. I'm not sure if he shares the same feeling about the WHL, which seems stronger, but everyone seems to agree that the Q is weaker these days.

I also don't think Steve is saying Martone is going to be a bust. He is saying that he doesn't think he's challenging for #1 especially if his play keeps demonstrating concerning inconsistency and low IQ/selfish plays like this past weekend.

"Has always been the best and will continue to be the best" is perhaps a bit overconfident in anyone's understanding of the future. And anyway, OHL is not the entire CHL.

I don't really have a dog in the fight here - I only want the Sharks to draft a great prospect and stop being dog shit in 4-8 years. I don't care where the kids come from or which league is best.

Any serious analyst who had thought there was a small chance of Eiserman going first didn’t know what they were talking about either, the gap between them was massive.

Anyways for Martone I think that in terms of OHL players he is behind Schaefer and Misa, but the gap is not such that a team that needs size wouldn’t look away if he was available at 1 even

Correct. I believe the WHL is superior to the OHL despite the scoring spike with the former. And I clearly stated that the NCAA trend is significant and is bridging the gap even more so. The OHL is a good development league but arguments can be made that it is nowhere near the best.

But this shouldn’t take away from how dominant Misa and Schaefer have been. They are more projectable. Martone up to this point comes across as big kid taking full advantage. He’s neither driving possession nor playing with consistent off-the-puck habits. When he isn’t scoring it gets magnified.

Do you think the numbers are going to be split in half in 4 years? The numbers are still relevant give or take a few percent

Patrick Kane is the best or one of the best American players of all time and even he (in 2006) went to the OHL and chl route.

From this past draft alone there was 14 drafted out of the CHL.

Also of the rest of the first round 3 guys joined the CHL this year. 17/32 is actually over 50%.

Not sure what point you’re trying to make as the numbers right in front of you show that you have clearly no idea what you’re talking about.

The CHL is a developmental league just as the NCAA is. But the chl produces more nhl talent year in and year out. That’s not to say the NCAA hasn’t closed the gap a bit in the last 10 years but it’s still not in CHL territory so calling the OHL which is apart of the CHL a joke league is laughable. You put the top 50 guys from the CHL into the NCAA and all 50 have a spot on any team with the large majority in the top 6 even on teams like Boston College.

As Jordan Dumais said of NHL central scouting "if they were real scouts they’d be working for an actual team". The same NHL central scouting bureau that said Hughes was the next McDavid; I don’t exactly put much stock into what they say

I think it is was pretty clear if you watched the U18 they played each other in that Celebrini was leaps and bounds ahead of Eiserman, but anyways, off topic, Martone will go top 5 its just a question of where

The draft doesn't guarantee NHL talent, and I'm talking about the weakening of the OHL, not the WHL. The OHL is being scrutinized.

As of today and according to the official NHL site, there are 54 rookies drafted between 2018 and 2024 who have appeared in one or more games this season. Here is a breakdown of the development sources of each prospect:

USHL: 17
OHL: 9
SWE: 7
WHL: 7
QMJHL: 5
Russia: 4
Finland: 4
Czech Rep.: 1

I already stated earlier that the majority of top rookie scorers come from the USHL/NCAA. So NHL teams are promoting more NCAA-trained kids than OHL kids, and the NCAA-trained kids are outproducing the OHL kids.

Keep in mind that two of the OHL kids -- Luchanko and Ritchie -- are no longer in the NHL for the time being.

I'd love to see you put a pro-OHL spin on this one.

Yeaaaaah buddy move those goal posts LOLOL.

I literally said early November is when it became official to me, you said:

"Any serious analyst who had thought there was a small chance of Eiserman going first didn’t know what they were talking about either, the gap between them was massive."

Say what you want about CSB, but they are by definition -- "serious analysts". They watch more games than any of the public services. And using a quote from a flawed kid popped for a DUI doesn't help your case.

For real, inject all these L's into my veins. I am thoroughly enjoying this.

There’s no goal post moving, obviously the best way to form opinions is to watch, but I don’t read that much English-language scouting service; Leroux, Martineau, Boisvert, Brunet are really the only articles I tend to read beyond whatever I happen to see on Twitter. And for them it was pretty much wire to wire for Celebrini. But anyways, I don’t get the point of attacking the intracacies of the point I made, we came to similar conclusion about Celebrini and Eiserman so it is what it is

The whole point you attacked was that I showed no bias when at first I (and several others) felt Eiserman the American was equal to Celebrini the Canadian (which they were after the 2022-23 season) but went unanimously toward Celebrini (and the gap you spoke of) begginning around November.

So again, there is no bias based on nationality with Martone.

Seems we are moving goalposts today to fit agendas- 6 year window lol? What about the last 10? Even still to your numbers there the CHL still has more guys playing than the USHL so I’m not sure what you’re trying to argue.

You do know OHL, WHL and QMJHL are all apart of the CHL, right?

Also in 2020-2021 the OHL didn’t even have a season lol and 19-20 was shortened so they’d probably have even more guys playing. Messed up the development of one of the better prospects coming out of it- Shane Wright.

I never criticized the WHL.

I also gave you a seven-year draft sample of current NHL rookie participation. You’re the one making excuses.
