Also had a nice shootout goal to win the game for the Steelheads.
On pace for 130 points.

If you're the Hawks, how do you not run screaming to the podium if you find yourself in a position to draft this kid? He's exactly the kind of linemate Bedard needs to unlock that next level as a scorer while being a pretty decent finisher himself on top of the vision and playmaking.

Chicago would only need to add a strong two-way winger to take care of the defensive details and they'd have this generation's version of Secord-Savard-Larmer. Fun stuff.

Portillo's Martone

That can’t be the solution. Because the knife will cut both ways. How will the CHL feel if both Medicine Hat’s Gavin McKenna and Brampton’s Porter Martone exit their player contracts to enroll at the University of Michigan as rumored? Every side has something to lose in this brave new world.

Wait, what?

I feel some are starting to question his skating. I don’t really see the problems there. He’s a big player. You have to assess him compared to other big players. Skates well for his size.

I think the bigger question is his playmaking. It’s definitely NHL top 6 level, but is he the type of player that will regularly create scoring opportunities for teammates? Because it’s kind of hard to drive a line if you can’t consistently set teammates up for chances. Being a very good complimentary player is useful, but it could limit his ceiling, so I think the true playmaking ability will be the question asked.

The McKenna one you can kind of buy why it might be useful for him to find a higher level of hockey in his draft season.

With Martone, are we sure he’s even going to be playing below the NHL level next season? I don’t think it’s a certainty he’s an NHL’er next season, so he might want to come up with a contingency plan for next season, but it seems like a maybe, at best, even if he wants to play at Michigan that he doesn’t end up playing in the NHL instead.

For him to play at Michigan he would also have to not sign his entry level and not even attempt to make the NHL which seems like not remotely realistic.

I sort of get why a player might consider that (a lot of the NCAA top 10 picks tend to go back to college for their D+1), but they haven’t even gotten him on campus yet. Seems like a lot to ask to get him to first sign with them away from the OHL and also forego the attempt to make the NHL immediately.

with the 1st overall selection in the 2025 nhl draft we select from the ontario hockey leagues mississauga steelheads.... Porter Martone...

No Canadian bias here....but he or Matt Schaefer would be my top choices for #1 overall in June. Martone can do it all + is captain of his team at 18 years old.

You must be pleased with the rumor that Martone could be headed to Michigan, assuming your avatar implies you're a Wolverines fan.

I see a lot of people saying he's a clone of Matthew Tkatchuk. In your opinion, what is this boy's ceiling? Tkatchuk-lite or Tkatchuk-plus?

I don't see Tkachuk at all.

Martone is physical, but he's not a shit disturber. He also doesn't skate as well.

I second this. We were quick to give Martone the "Tkachuk label" because this is what we all dream about when we see a guy like that, but I don't think that's accurate, at least not today.

He certainly has some physicality and power in his game, a lot more than most prospects do, but I would say he is a better playmaker and goalscorer than he is a powerforward imo. At least in terms of play habits.

However, in his mid-20's, in the NHL, during the playoffs, on a line with an elite playdriver, he could become that Tkachukesque player everyone wants to see.

I think playmaking is his specialty for sure.

His IQ is really top notch. He sees the ice well, and seems to always be a step ahead of the play.

Honestly he reminds me of Dylan Strome, but more willing to use his body.
