There's many reasons, but a big one that hasn't been mentioned yet, is that several Michkov fans called habs fans delusional last summer for saying Demidov was the same level of talent as Michkov. According to them, Michkov was multiple tiers better than Demidov.

It's pretty clear that if not for his trips to Rotenberg's doghouse, he would have outscored both Michkov and Kaprizov in the same amount of games. Whether that makes him a better prospect is another question as the surrounding cast is quite different.

But I think in hindsight, it was better for his progress to have to overcome this situation. Adversity breeds toughness and he proved he has character by just keeping his nose down and working to achieve undeniable stardom and receive the recognition of his coach. He might not have improved as much if he had been handed premium minutes from day one. Stats at 18 are meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

The Habs fan base were horrified with his usage but the way he was starting to overcome it, produce with limited Ice team and eventually dominate into way more minutes is very key in his development
