I mean the rate at which he was playing prior to the halt in play, he was virtually playing at that pace as it was. So what you have said is that "he should be exactly what he appears to be right now"

Very astute
was trying to be positive groucho. go bitch out an actual troll.

blash had hronek on the ice as much as possible with bertuzzi-larkin-mantha meaning when zadina was on the ice it was either cholowski-bowey-nemeth-daley-biega-ericsson as his dmen . and his centers were filpula or helm . think that over

It’s funny how you can read this thread and immediately tell who has watched Zadina play and who hasn’t.

But hey, let’s shit on a 20 year old who put up a half PPG pace with line mates who have no offensive talent, on one of the worst teams ever.

There was a lot of "Detroit are geniuses" and "Ottawa are idiots" in the immediate post-draft discussion.

I know because I was bitterly disappointed that the Sens passed on Zadina for a guy who had scored 8 goals for Boston University.

I thought that Tkachuk was getting an artificial boost from his pedigree as happens from time to time. There was a lot of discussion around his interview and character, and in the aftermath of the disappointing outcome of Curtis Lazar who had been drafted for similar reasons, Sens fans like myself were convinced that Dorion had outsmarted himself and not picked the obvious offensive talent for a team that was screaming for one.

Tkachuk's mature and impressive all-around stint in the NHL thus far surprised me and I have to eat a lot of crow about that. But there's also a bit of revisionism going on here with respect to the original narrative about how Detroit made out like bandits yet again.

In any event, you can hardly be conclusive about their comparative worth so soon into their respective careers. There are always people out there trying to jump the gun about that sort of thing which is just silly.

Lots more to come from both players.

I don't see any real alarm bells with respect to Zadina. Let's see how he develops.

Zadina is a going to be a PPG player. He protects the puck well. Put up good numbers on a very bad team.
Glad to see reasonable Willy fan, who does not say things like ImAGine iF WE picKEd ZaDiNA bEfOre Hughes. If we skipped on Zadina we would take Bouchard, and if you guys did not pick Hughes and took Z he would already be 30 goalscorer, instead He was playing with Filpula Helm And Nielsen and he did very well. Anyway that number 82 on Zs jersey is looking pretty sick, much better than 11.

I wasn’t coming at you as if you were a troll. Just pointing out that your statement of “he should become _____” looks to be rather easily fulfilled given how he was already playing last year. He should exceed that bar with only slight improvement, and it feels like on surface you are selling him short.

Um, just take a look at the Sens OWN draft GDT when they picked Tkachuk over Zadina:
GDT: - 2018 NHL Draft | June 22nd @ 7pm est

I think it's kind of funny looking at the Detroit vs Ottawa GDT in comparison. A lot of Detroit fans were over the moon with the Zadina choice and calling Phoenix's screwup by drafting Hayton.
GDT: 6/22/2018 | NHL Entry Draft | 7:30PM | NBCSN

I think both Tkachuk and Zadina will be amongt the top forwards of their draft class for different reasons. I'm happy with who Detroit got, and I'm sure Ottawa fans are happy with what they got.

Barrett Hayton is going to be a fine player, Kotkaniemi was probably a bit more of a reach IMO.

I think Kotkaniemi had risen all the way up to 5 on draft boards, right before the draft happened.

Hayton, at highest, I recall being around 11.

Pretty sure that draft boards had Seider out of the top 10 as well right?

That was more an issue of underscouting than anything. Hayton was a definite reach at 5.

Here's a pretty accurate look at what people thought prior to the draft. Kotkaniemi at 9, Hayton at 11. Zadina/Tkachuk trading between 3/4, Hughes at 6.

At a glance I think it was KK and Hayton being reaches that allowed for Islanders to get Dobson, Detroit to get Zadina and Hughes to drop to Vancouver. Major mistakes by Montreal and Phoenix.

Fair enough that's how I remember the draft as well but the guy ranked 9th going 3rd is a bigger reach than 11 to 5th IMO and Montreal left Zadina on the table, the Yotes left Dmen there (which was a position of strength for them to play devils advocate).

wow was going off memory there but could also see why they took the more certain pick.

that being said I think Zadina will be more impactful than the the 2 guys teams reached for.

As I recall some saw Brady Tkachuk as a reach but I didn't think so at the time he just brings a different type of impact.

I just think that Hayton is going to have a strong career but maybe people missed him as the WJHC last year?

Nobody missed him. Despite the crazy stats he was only Canada's 4th or 5th best forward. Lafreniere, Cozens, Veleno were better than him and Conor McMichael was at least on par. All of these guys had fewer points but were better during the tournament. He scored a ton, but he wasn't the hero of that team.

This is going to be the story of his career as an under appreciated player, even more so playing out in the desert.

He has had 2 really solid WJHC in the 2 years from his draft and a solid D+1 year along with the slow acclimation to the NHL last year with a really good stint in the AHL given his age.
