I didn’t just mean for right now but in the future as well.

Like I said before he is a goal scoring version of JOhnny Hockey, which isn’t a bad thing but it’s not the type of guy to build a team around he is more of a complimentary piece.
he's only 20 years old, what he is and what he will be isn't clearly define just yet. He could be Martin St.Louis too.
watching him now and watching him in the NCAA this year and last, he has improved his quickness a ton and he's much more dynamic as a player now.

Well, I have I far more realistic outlook on prospects than most of HF in terms of both expectations and value. As far as I’m concerned, for an undersized 20 year old coming into a foreign system in the heat of the playoffs, he’s easily far exceeded expectations I would have put on him in this time frame.
Caufield came into a foreign system during the regular season, not the heat of the playoffs.

not disagreeing with your eventual point, but keeping it real.

Habs down 3-0, no goals for Caufield, time to bash the 20 year old. Lol

Well, when you have comments saying he goes #1 in a redraft and he's the best pure goal scorer in the world, you have no one to blame but yourself for ridiculous expectations...

it's not unjustified to say he could have went before Hughes, like you do acknowledge that right ?

He will most likely not be the best player of the draft when it's all said and done but nothing out of this draft class is a real standout at the moment.

The kid doesn't deserve to be bashed because some posters have unrealistic expectations. The truth is he's been great these playoffs but you can't expect a 20 year old (not even) rookie to lead a team to a Stanley Cup.

Has he struggled in the finals? Yup.

But most Habs players have so lets all relax and enjoy watching the kid progress. He is a tremendous talent who still has lots to learn.

On March 26th he was playing against Bemidji State and here he is 3 months later picking up his 11th point in his 19th NHL playoff game. Say what you will about him but Hab fans have something to be really excited about as he will be in his age 20 season next year as an NHL rookie.

It's not just that, it's that every prospect will make mistake but because of the hype his mistake are amplified which is not fair. He has the tools and he has the talent, he will be a good one.

He is already a good one. Star in the making, like Suzuki. KK got a great future too!

No, he shouldn't get bashed, and I think he's actually been better than a lot will let on. He's learning on the job right now too, so even some jitters are more than excusable (hell if anything playing under the lights in a historic franchise like MTL as a heavy underdog...I think he's been showing a lot of poise in general, pretty unflappable really, especially for his age).

All I'm saying is some posters are raising the standard for the kid then also complaining he's getting held accountable to that standard. If you want to cram him into the spotlight, that thing is gonna shine on everything he does, so don't act surprised.

For example, saying he's not doing much when he doesn't have the puck isn't that wrong--his metrics are pretty bad considering he's starting 70% of the time in the offensive zone, 20% more than any other Canadiens forward, and even then his team relative stats are subpar. It probably doesn't really matter to anyone when he's potting game winning assists in overtime vs. a powerhouse, but it's also not an inaccurate criticism, and an opportunity for growth.

A lot to learn? yes. Sky is the limit, though. The guy has insane potential and is realizing imo only a piece of it right now. Absolutely focus on the good, be thrilled you have the kid, be happy that his future is so bright.

In any fanbase there are always a few that get too carried away. He's looking like a stud though.

Now that I'm 100% on board with. I love how he's just walked up the levels. And I forget if it was Pronman or Wheeler, but one of their writeups before the draft went through every criticism...and the end result was really just "still...that's a lot of goals." It's easy to live with the other stuff when he's racking it up. No one cares if Ovechkin wins a Selke.

Haven't had much interaction with Habs fans in the past, have you?

Not much since '93, no

This year is a little different getting to pat Toffoli on the back and dealing with my conflicting feelings about Corey Perry

He’s really impressive, just so dynamic and dangerous all the time. Crazy shot, great with the puck on his stick, quick and shifty. Probably won’t end up the best player in his draft (my money’s on one of Seider, Zegras or Byram), but should end up one of the better ones.

Has a very legit shot to be a DeBrincat level player, and a small chance to be a shoot-first MSL level player.

What about that statement isn’t true? He had tons of giveaways last night, he was bailed out by Price then the post.
He's proven to be very adept at playmaking/passing as well. He is way better in that regard than i expected. And while he won't likely bring value on the defensive side, he is also not as bad as I would have expected. He backchecks hard and shows good effort and decent defensive awareness.

I think regardless of expectations....the kid is growing a lot in experience and I am excited to see his progression going forward. The vets seem to love him as well, which is encouraging to see.
