Hockey is one of those sports where luck plays a significant factor in box score stats. Sometimes you make a great play, and the goalie makes a better save. Sometimes the puck goes off your leg, and you know nothing about it. At the end of the season, they usually all even out. They all count the same.
Lafreniere isn't having highlighted troubles. Rangers fans have tried to explain that he's playing well enough, but he was lacking any type of luck. His on ice SH% was 1-2% for a long time, which is unsustainably low for any player. Now he's getting some luck for it all to even out. His on ice SH% is still low. It's now hovering in the 5% range. He's likely due a few more points like this before it's all evened out, as some of us said would happen.
It's not fair to him to act like this is a fluke, but when he was getting terribly unlucky that he was playing poorly. If he deserves criticism for lacking box-score stats when he deserved them, he should get credit for box score stats when they are a little luckier.
