True, but the question is 'is this team "legitimately capable of winning" the Cup?'It would be a very poor strategy to disassemble a team that is legitimately capable of winning for the hope of a different team that may or may not be capable of doing so. I often think that fans of this team are more excited by the hope of winning than actually watching the process of winning occur. Maybe it is an age or maturity thing on a site like this, but anyone who believes that failure does not precede, and in fact is not almost universally a requirement of, success hasn't lived much of a life.

I'd love that to be right, but I think you're far too optimistic.I don't see why not, I mean sure you will say they haven't done it yet, but it took Washington 14 years.
It took Yzerman 13 years.
It took the current Tampa core 12 years which included getting swept by Columbus after a 62 win season and then getting laughed out of the building at the NHL awards.
People forget that happened but it happened they were literally laughed out of the building.
I don't see why the Leafs can't do it.
They have great depth on the wings
They have a rock solid top 2 centers, I would like to see Kampf as the 4th line center instead of the 3rd line center but that's a piece they can add later.
They have a solid tandem.
They have a good defense, although I'd like to see another piece added there too.
They aren't far away at all
I look forward to Bunting's reputation and how quickly it's going to change from being a moron to not being a moron since he plays in Carolina now.If he stays healthy Bertuzzi should be able to replace Bunting's production.
Losing Bunting is addition by subtraction. Bertuzzi's not a complete moron like Bunting is. That alone makes him worth the extra million bucks.
Add in the fact Bertuzzi's here on a one year "show me" deal for a player with a lot to prove and this has the potential to be a homerun.
Best case scenario: Bertuzzi is a huge success. Nylander becomes redundant and is traded. Bertuzzi signs long term and becomes a fan favourite.
I would LOVE it if that happened.
Worst case scenario: Bertuzzi gets hurt and doesn't work out. Leafs let him walk as a free agent. The cap space afforded his salary will be valuable next year.
At minimal the Leafs replace a complete moron with someone who only has moronic tendencies.
That's a win.
I'd love that to be right, but I think you're far too optimistic.
Does how long another team took really affect our likelihood? Lots of teams have taken less than 50 years....
We have two very good right wingers, one of whom isn't very good when the playoffs ramp up. Two or even three left wingers who might be very good. One center who's '"rock solid", at least in the regular season, and one who might be better described as a lead weight.
Good but not great defence and probably good but unproven goalies.
"Legitimately capable of winning the Cup"? I'd like to believe that, but my practical side says 'no'.
I didn't say one of them ramps up, I said one isn't very good when the playoffs ramp up.Which winger isn't very good in the playoffs and which one ramps up their game?
I have a feeling the stats won't agree with your opinion.
He definitely needs to be given an extensive look on PP1. Watching the tape on him he should easily be the best net front guy on the team. He's surprisingly skilled in tight and can threaten from a lot of weird angles (think prime JVR when he was with us). Honestly I think he's gonna stick on PP1 when the dust is settled.I just dont understand this resignation that he won't get on to the top pp unit. He thrives there- he cracked it in Boston! Now I know TO was the best pp in the league last year but he brings a completely different element- a greasy net front presence- that no one else in that lineup can provide. Youre telling me a 33 yo Tavares or Nylander whose only sporadically engaged at best is unbumpable??!! Once he gets on hes not going to let go- hes a top ten net front guy in the league imho- his whole game is built for it!
Hes scored at a 70 point pace 2 out of the last 3 seasons so I think thats a reasonable base. You can add 5-15 if he clicks with am34 and marner. Assuming he's on the top unit at least half the time- and I think he will be thats pretty well an 80-85 point baseline and thats honestly what I see. In fact there is probably upside from there...
.... and then you deduct about a dozen games lol! So you end up with something like 75 in 70- with 30 goals!!
Yes.True, but the question is 'is this team "legitimately capable of winning" the Cup?'
I think easily a career year for Bertuzzi. Domi's challenge, I think, will be getting enough ice time to exceed 70 points.Being on that line he should be getting at least 25 g. And if he’s on the #1 pp unit that would add another 5 at least. Full health and big minutes, he should be getting 65-70 points. Points aside, I hope he is that gritty net front presence we lacked until O’Reilly came. Bunting tried but he often just got knocked down. Excited for both him and Domi. I think we could see career years for both.
Seems like your brain is too with that take.Team e9ukd be better with hyman instead of Mander user Nylander l. Phone is mfuhctionin
