I wonder about the implications not for this season but for next. How are visas going to be handled? Are we going back to the bad old days with claims of political asylum, defections and the like?
Without getting into politics, I can't see this lasting another 10 months.

It’s not wading into politics to envision a scenario where a peace will not have been negotiated prior to summer 2023. In fact, a partial mobilization all but ensures prolonged war barring a radical change in course.

Burrows had a sophomore slump with similar-ish rookie numbers (on pace for 13/10/23), and a similar level of professionalism/work ethic.

Granted, Podkolzin is a lot more skilled and I don't see it happening, but still.
Burrows had like 3 goals in his sophomore season IIRC, except for that one insanely nice goal vs Calgary that AV laughed at.

I'm only surprised this didn't happen a month ago to trap the bulk of NHL players in Russia.

doubt potential NHL'ers will be affected

sounds like this is going to affect poor rural areas on the east side of the country. guessing malkin and ovechkin will be able to go back at christmas.

There’s a literal travel ban for Russian men of military age (18-65) from leaving Russia without valid authorization paperwork. It’s not a trivial impediment.

If civil strife escalates as a result of mobilization, there may come a point when exempting NHL millionaires becomes politically untenable. Would you want Pod or Kuz to be left without a chair when the music ends?

Imagine a bunch of 63 yearolds trying to fight

They raised the eligible age for conscription from 18-40 to no age limit. The idea was to allow for conscription of specialists like doctors and engineers.

There’s also rumors that Russian airlines are not allowed to sell plane tix to destinations outside of Russia to men 18-65. Not confirmed except in Washington Times, an iffy source.

I see that instructions on how to break your arm (relatively painlessly) is trending on social media as Russian men explore all desperate options to avoid being called up for the military meat-grinders in Ukraine. And flights out of the country to anywhere were going for $3200 a pop, assuming you can find one.

This military mobilization affects Russian men from 18-60 who've ever spent even a year or two in the military even as a reservist or a raw recruit. So it's hard not to believe that some hockey players in Mother Russia might be caught up in this edict.

Podz and Kuzmenko must be smiling every day that they left this mess behind them. As for 'Big Tree' Tryamkin, who knows?

I certainly don't have enough actual hockey knowledge or experience for this to be a thing other than a gut feeling, but I just feel like Podkolzin is going to be an absolute stud.

Like in his rookie season he sort of flashed elite level everything? I had no idea his shot would be so good, he had flashes of legit elite playmaking, flashes of speed killing defensemen, flashes of physicality taking over plays. And despite showing all of that, what would you say is his number one attribute? It's tough to find any of the talking heads that can pinpoint what it is, but mostly all agree that it's his......like, will to be good?

You know how a lot of times we would say "man Virtanen just has all the tools, if we could combine them with Motte's heart and character you would have an UNBELIEVABLE player". I feel like Podkolzin has that mix of elite tools, and the drive to use them.

I predict something like 20 goals 30 assists, 100+ meaningful hits, and that the fancy stats will love him. Glue guy that just wills his team to wins that we otherwise might not have had.

He's shown flashes of high end defensive play as well. I can see him topping out as a Landeskog-ish player.

Landeskog is a very good stylistic-comparable. Obviously his ceiling isn't anywhere near as high but a 50-point top-6 winger than plays a very heavy game with some special teams utility.

Kuzmenko-Pettersson-Podkolzin

As a few others have alluded to, I think Boudreau should replace Mikheyev with Podkolzin on the Kuzmenko-Pettersson line. Put Mikheyev with Horvat.

My gut feeling says that Podkolzin is going to have a break-out year this year. To what extent I am unsure, but I think we'll see good things from Podkolzin.

I'm wondering if the following lines could work?

Kuzemko-Pettersson-Podkolzin
Miller-Horvat-Boeser
Pearson-Dickinson-Garland (might be a tough ask of Dickinson to play center here while having the ability to create plays, generate offence, and utilize line mates).
Hoglander-Lazar-Joshua

That would be a very stacked top 6 however.

Strong game today

He does everything right, just probably needs to be more assertive. He might be a little too risk-averse because he doesn't want to be seen as a liability, which kind of limits the amount of skill he can show.

Not that I blame him because he probably feels what we all see which is Bruce doesn't trust him simply for being a younger player.

Also in his time with SKA he learned that 1 mistake = sitting at the end of the bench for the rest of the game.

Looked fantastic again to me.

I haven't looked up any stats but I see him make a lot of good zone entries. Usually just by chipping the puck past a defender, keeping his feet moving and pinning the puck on the boards for a few seconds while his linemates take position.
