This to me was clear cut slam dunk 4D and 4F until the playoffs.
Kerfoot's play has made me think that maybe he is more valuable to protect then a extra D.

I am undecided who is more valuable Holl or Dermott as the 4th D which makes the "protect" 3 or "protect 4" less important.

Maybe protecting 7F will allow the leafs to trade for a forward that another team can't protect. More research required on this front but what once seemed like a given is now up for debate.

Can we expose everyone associated with TOR?

I concur Kerfoot to me was our best forward vs Habs .. Willy to me was #2 .. then Spezz .. man this could be a non playoff team next year .. it is not clear cut to me either .. Holl is an easy guy for me to say bye bye too .. but don't think Seattle wants him at all .. Dermy will likely go to Seattle either way as he wants more $$$ and Leafs do not have CAP room for him

Coleman Kerfoot and Goodrow would be a solid 3rd line .. all can skate .. all can score .. all are gritty .. and all can play defense

If they want Kerfoot they can have him. Easily replaceable.

This would seem to be the most logical... though I don't know if losing Holl kills us, but then who are the other 3 forwards you protect? Not worth it...
Even if the team did decide to move on from Marner, you do it through a trade to get assets back.

Imagine wanting to expose a top 5 scorer in the league.... How are people that stupid?

Really stupid, the fact that there is a Tortorella as coach thread has confirmed this fan base has lost it.

I get everybody is angry and upset and yes there should and will be some change but suggesting we expose a top 5 player or hire torts is just lunacy.

Yes wasting valuable cap room for a guy who hasn't scored one single goal in 18 straight playoff games is smart.

What a dumb comment.
Why wouldn't you trade the player a get a draft pick? or get an asset? Could put him in a deal for Seth Jones or Eichel.

Yeah, it's also smart to completely disregard the 90-100 point pace he has had in each of the last 3 regular seasons. I know, I know; the regular season doesn't mean anything if you don't win in the playoffs. Let's just come at these things with at least a small slice of common sense.

This, with two caveats:

1) I would take a long hard look at the option of exposing Muzzin and protecting Dermott. Capspace is obviously a massive premium for this team, and at Muzzin's age and with his style of play, he's likely to decline before the end of his contract.

2) I would also consider a trade with Seattle where we end up exposing Rielly or Marner for them in exchange for X. It obviously needs to make sense, but Seattle will have a ton of capspace, but Marner's actual salary isn't actually all that high anymore, so it could make a ton of sense for them. They'll also likely be pretty flush with picks/prospects from various other wheelings and dealings. Rielly as well is entering the last year of his contract, and I don't know if we should be paying him the salary raise he'll be looking for, considering our cap structure.

Justin Holl is a good guy in the locker room and a decent player but even at $2 mil he should not be protected. We need someone better in that top 4 and we can sign a 3rd pair guy for league min. Not to mention we already have guys like Sandin, Dermott, Lilly who are chomping to get their shot at full time duties.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Sandin
Dermott - Lilly

I think that gives us a very affordable d-core with good puck movers and defensively competent d-men combos on each pair.

You go with the 7-3-1 format and save Kerfoot. As much as I dislike the guy, he's been a revelation these playoffs and he's only 27.
