Was not being engaged part of his issue in Detroit?

I think it might have been last year.
Led the team in preseason scoring. Everytime he was on the ice, we put the puck on the other team's net.
Yet he starts in the AHL while nobodies, never-weres and has-beens started with Detroit.

Finally got the call to Detroit.
He opened the season with 2 goals and 6 shots in two games (total of 23-24 minutes). He's rewarded by watching his icetime fall from 11-12 minutes to 8 minutes.

His shots/60 plummeted as the season went on.

There just didn't seem to be any way to get ahead in Detroit.
Very, very odd situation.

Svechnikov is a good, smart, hardworking player with great hands.
He's slow - a problem exacerbated by his injuries.
But I think his IQ, size and hands make up for it.

He's brilliant at converting the on-the-bards touch-pass from the D to the center on the breakout, whether in his own zone or the neutral zone.
Most players take that pass, turn and end up in a puck battle on the boards. Svech one-touches it to the center and we're moving on the fly.
That skill alone made him better than the horseshit Blashill used night-in, night out.

He's got a scorer's shot, a powerplay-level IQ, and he's 6'2, 210 or whatever.
I'll never understand why Detroit buried him below guys like Perlini, Hirose, Kuffner, Brome and all the other nobodies who accomplished nothing in Detroit.

What a bizarre situation. Though it does explain why he doesn't look at all like a guy who couldn't hack it on one of the worst teams in the league.

I think it comes down to what sports often comes down to.

Guys have their guys.
Stevie Yzerman had his guys. Blashill saw Stevie bring in Fabbri, Perlini, Brome, Erne etc - and said, "Oh, If I want to keep my job, I better play them."
Blashill also likes certain kinds of guys. Low-event, grinders.

The fact is, either Detroit has drafted like ass, or developed like ass.

People like to say Blashill is a good development coach.
I'd point to:
Jurco - Massive fall off
Sheahan - Massive fall off
Tatar - Massive fall off and traded
Athanasiou - Massive fall off and traded
Mantha - Massive fall off and traded
Larkin - Massive fall off, 2 straight years
Ouellet - Showed promise and fell off
Marchenko - Showed promise and fell off
Brendan Smith - Ditto
Pulkkinen - Ditto
Cholowski - Ditto
Svechnikov - Never got started
Zadina - Not Filling the Nets
Rasmussen - Looks like a 4th line C at best right now

Some of those fall offs are due to Datsyuk/Zetterberg getting old and retiring.
Some of those were just bad picks, likely.
But I think the Detroit Red Wings development system has been broken.
We'll soon find out if Yzerman and company have changed anything.

Probably the same reason Jets played Ondrej Pavelec in goal for years when better options were all around. He was responsible for some of our best draft choices in the years he sieved his way through the league. Sometimes less is more.

Pretty stoked for this signing. He's looked good and not nearly as slow as I thought he would. He has the smarts to be a top 6 player.
Hope PoMo learns how to play him best, properly and Svech finally can show his skill and produce in the NHL. Game 1 last night didn't give much hope, from the Coach's decisions, useage.
Svech showed alot of compete and "try" in his few minutes of spattered icetime.

Turned out to be " closer-to-the-ice Press Box-like " in the lineup. He & Ves should have had more opportunity as the top dawgs couldn't get it done!

This is the challenge for Svech.
When you play 6:43, it's going to be hard to get any flow going. He's got to find away to do enough in 6:43 to stay in the lineup - a tall task.

Someone had to be bumped for game. I’m just glad it’s not Cole.
I can't remember the last time the Jets had a bottom 6 completely comprised of players that I wouldn't banish to pressbox. Usually there's one or two that I'd be fine to see sit upstairs but I don't have an issue with anyone right now. I actually would sooner pressbox Harkins or Vesalainen over Svech based on preseason.

Based on game 1 I thought Svech was the weakest. Ves looked fast, Harkins was making things happen, svech was just meh.

Vesalainen is a bit of an enigma for me. He's so tantalizing with his size and skillset. Once or twice a game he'll make a little play that I'll be like 'THAT'S WHAT WE WANT TO SEE FROM YOU!' and then he goes back to being somewhat invisible. I'd love for Maurice to throw him on the second line and give him a solid 10 game audition there. For cripes sakes we've given Copp how many games up there and it's pretty obvious he's just not a top 6 guy.

Seems he's in that Copp rut where you have to earn a look in the top 6 by putting in your time in a checking role, but by then you've got no offense developed.

He has the size - I just don't see the skill that many talk about.
Or is it potential skill . . .

Saw enough of Svech I guess.

Scheifele's back. Someone has to sit.

I'm happy to see that Moe is giving Perfetti another look. If Perfetti doesn't manage to claim a spot, Svetch would be in for him.

Speculation can be fun at this point. Perfetti makes the most of 3rd line minutes. Copp does not make the most of 2nd line minutes. We soon see Perf - PLD - Ehlers and Copp - Lowry - Stastny with Svetch/Harkins/Vesa fighting it out for the two 4th line winger spots.

Svechnikov -

Struggled in the first game but I'd like to see more -
Now this guy has skill - but needs to execute better.
Maybe that's the wrong describer - maybe better decision making is a better way to put it.
At least that's what I see from my recliner
