Im not even a Sharks fan but I hope Kane gets nothing. So tired of people behaving like he has done and getting compensated for it. If another team wants to give him a chance that's up to them.
SJS shouldn't have to keep paying a player who doesn't follow the rules of his contract.

As a Sharks fan, clearly the lower the cap hit the better but I figure this can be no worse a result than a buyout so it's likely to what degree. Dude has skirted COVID protocol rules multiple times to a point where it's reasonable to be skeptical about his actions. I think he's been doing a lot of it on purpose to get the contract terminated for his benefit as it relates to the bankruptcy proceedings. My best guess at this point is that all his debt is tied to his current contract and they can't go after him for future contracts so he's trying to get out of this one in a way that holds up. It sucks because I would love to have Kane the hockey player on the ice for the Sharks. I think they'd be a playoff team with him but the team has moved on from him and I can only hope for the least amount of damage to their cap structure as possible through this process.

Contending teams are going to line up…to inquire about this guy. They almost have to. He’s basically free top 6 LW at this point of the season. There’s not really much risk in adding him at a pro-rated $750K. If he doesn’t work out, just bury him in the minors. If he does work out, you added a impact rental without giving up any picks or prospects.

I’d go farther than a “top 6” and say he is a 1st line LW modern NHL power forward still in his prime that can create his own scoring chances. Agree on the rest about 1 year and possible bury if it goes bad. Low risk high reward.

I hesitate to say this but if the Sharks were a contender this year I think they’d try and make it work for a run.

Agreed. I don't think he has many people in his corner, especially after the fake vaccine card. I think the NHLPA is going through the motions, but I really don't think they actually want to back him up. Maybe they win something in the grievance case, but maybe not.

Either way this is great for the Sharks, and I'm happy management finally stepped up and just did it.
Ya the PA really has no choice. It's all about precedent as well. If this happens to another player and the PA were to stand up for them and not Kane, I'm sure Kane could probably go after the union for not fighting for him.

I don't foresee a situation where the Sharks aren't paying at least some of his salary long term, but this was probably best case scenario for them.

I don’t give a shit about Kane but the NHLPA is doing the right thing, these are guaranteed contracts and that’s what they care about.

Note that Milstein didn't say there was interest from NHL teams. Just... "teams".

That's not how a union works. If I am a hockey player, where you have guaranteed contracts, you don't want them to be terminated willy nilly. Even the Mike Richards one, which was far more egregious, got 60% of his remaining contract. If you look at the termination fees, they carry for 17 years + Recapture of 5 years - All against the CAP.

Riemer + Kane (50% Retained) + 1st Rounder for Mrazek + Ritchie

not sure why leaf fans think there is a chance they bring him in. Corp owners don’t need the backlash by bringing someone in with his baggage. Not that he couldn’t help on the ice. I would be shocked if Dubas even places a call.

NHLPA filed a grievance, so we shall see. Was more just a fun proposal. Leafs if they want him, can get him at league min. once this gets cleared up.
Yeah, but even with the grievance the consensus is that the contract is not coming back. There's also zero chance we're giving up our best goaltender and a first for 50% off of Kane, which would equal about 2 million in cap space per year.

Myself and everyone else who enjoys watching the Leafs lose sincerely hopes you sign him at whatever value.

Oh God I f***ing hope not.

He would be a disaster here. All of his loser friends are here.

Has he had streetfights with all of them yet?

I hope he and Lucic end up on Vancouver in a couple years and they follow them around at night with their own reality show called Kane & Looch.

I hate to be the rain on a parade, but for those saying no, Kane's getting another deal in the NHL.

Assholery aside, he's a talented player. Legit power forward who can get you 30 to perhaps even 40 goals in the right situation. At likely what will be a bargain for a player of his caliber, a team will definitely take the gamble.

it just doesn't sit well with me that this league just allows contract termination of a black player.
people talk about systemic racism and doing more for POC, but when one gets dragged thru the mud and mistreated such as Evander Kane it becomes "YEAH BUT IT'S DIFFERENT. YEAH BUT. YEAH BUT"
it's all so tiresome.
