Do you follow pro sports at all, especially hockey?

Long enough to know that you don't take a line of text from an internet forum and attach your own context then use your perspective to educate perceived simpletons like myself, apparently.

"Evander's ready for the new season. He knows all about the exception. You could ask him yourself. He'd tell you ... "

"He is not a young guy anymore and it's time for him to step up and become a leader on this team..."

I don't know if I'd call it calling him out for his on-ice performance. In fact I'd guess it might be more a calling out on his off-ice performance actually...

Without having heard the original but just going from the report here I don't necessarily take it as a calling out at all. It isn't like he is saying Kane should have done such and such a thing but didn't. It is more like a suggestion for the future. The kid has grown up I hope he becomes a leader sort of thing. Of course I don't know how Kane would take it but I can guess he might not be impressed.

There's a fresh interview with Wheeler making the rounds in which he is quoted as saying "Evander is not a young guy anymore and it's time for him to step up and become a leader on this team..." or words to that effect. Not anything particularly crazy really but it's a bit unusual for one player to make such a specific comment about another...

Wow, between that and the comment he made on Twitter today about profitable NFL owners wanting to lock out the players based on what the Bills just got sold for (to the same guy who owns the Sabres), Blake's on a roll. Perhaps his little one is keeping him up some nights...

Seriously though, if he did make that comment about Kane becoming a leader, it's a challenge for Evander to grow up and be a pro - on and off of the ice. Let's hope we see that - even Tkachuk was a punk early on and turned out to be a stud.

Love this.

I don't see the comment as a negative . More acknowledging that Kane is now not only a prime talent but Wheeler expects him to be a leader. Blend of a challenge and showing confidence in 9.

The best.

This shows to me that the rumour that Kane is disliked in the dressing room is false.

really?

It kinda says the opposite to me...I'd say it's a less combative way of saying Kane has been a bit of an ass the past few years and it's time for him to step up.

Do you seriously think Wheeler would have said something like that if that was the intent?

No way. Wheeler doesn't make waves and is very measured about what he says when it comes to the team or hockey.

PS what I was talking about was the tweet in response.

Given all of the heat around Kane, I think Wheeler should have been more measured and diplomatic in his public comments. He could just as easily had said something like "we're really looking forward to Kane having a big year as an important leader on the team". Having said that, I don't think it's a terrible thing to have a bit of tension going into training camp. Whatever gives this group a zap to shake them up and give more than they have would be welcome.

It will take the media's focus away from "does he want to be here" and put it onto "is he up to Wheelers challenge" In any event Kane's first media session when he arrives will be interesting and well covered everywhere. Get your popcorn ready.

I'm surprised wheeler said something like that at all actually. There's no way a player makes a comment like that about another player (particularly a player named Evander Kane) without the media jumping on it. I don't get the people who always respond to this stuff with "oh there goes the media again trying to stir **** up." I mean when I first heard the quote from Wheeler - before I'd heard anyone in the media comment on it in any way - my instant, initial thought was "oh boy." I mean it didn't take any media response for me to immediately think Wheeler had made a pretty bold statement there and it was likely to create a stir.

They've been talking it up on the big show this morning and the general consensus is that there is an element of Wheeler "calling Kane out." That's my feeling too.

I can't see Wheeler making that statement and not expecting it to be taken a certain way. :dunno:

BTW, I don't necessarily think Kane is dis-liked in the dressing room. I've known lots of people over the years who I liked hanging out with and felt were funny, entertaining people but whom I would have preferred not to have to work with...

why did Kane remove that tweet is what i want to know, and why is WHEELER taking the role of Ladd, and calling out a player, which lets face it, that's exactly what he did. I dont recall Kane doing this ever, and he wouldn't via the media. Is this really the effect Wheeler wanted to have. Perhaps he wanted to be the center of attention for a change. I'm still put off by it....as Kane said, he could have shot him a text. This seems very calculated to me.

Again, Kane plays when he is on the ice, so what the hell is Wheeler talking about when he wont show up till January anyway.
----------------------------
On the flip side it could be seen as Wheeler saying that Kane having a career season is the key to them making a playoff run, but cough cough, Pavelec.

I still dont like it.

Kane never removed the tweet?

Seems like a little friendly rib from Kane to Wheeler. Once again Kane has successfully trolled the local media into an uproar over nothing.

It really doesn't take much. Any twitch or flutter in relation to Kane seems to be Priority ONE for the local sports media.

BTW: Has AIH determined whether Wheeler is a racist now? :sarcasm:

explain how Kane "trolled" the local media? Some of you guys give Kane WAY too much credit as a canny media manipulator. I don't think many of his tweets are planned or thought out much at all. He just says whateva...
