I'd rather get two high end assets than four pieces of meh. I mean a D-man prospect ready to step into a top-four role. If that was the only return I'd be happy, but if it's a slightly lesser D-man prospect and a mid 1st that would still be better than what Buffalo will get from four pieces.

No one gets two high end assets for a rental...

The team could use the depth he’s asking for. I’m happy to hear it’s the ask, but I hope he finds a partner.

Kane's young, fast, physical, the 2nd leading scorer on your team...why is the focus on trading him rather than re-signing him?

Like most bottom of the league teams... the problems are deep, and it's going to take awhile to turn this thing around. With that said, Buffalo also has multiple forwards locked in at top dollar (Eichel, ROR, Okposo) for the forseeable future.

It's in the teams best interest to recoup assets spent trying to "accelerate" the rebuild, and continue building....

Kane is our only high value rental asset. Any other trades that we could make the bring in additional assets to build, would require subtracting from future cost effective years (young RFAs, Prospects, etc).

It's a no brainer

Cause we blow, the city isn't particularly enticing and no normal UFA would want to re-sign here without a vast overpayment. I for one would love it if Kane comes back in the summer after a rental-only trade but don't have high hopes for it happening.

Near certainty he wants the playoffs for the first time in his career, and to re-sign with a more talented team. This is the largest factor, IMO.

He’s not that smart with the puck, and isn’t good defensively or without the puck. This is the secondary factor IMO. Grade on various facets:
He gets “A’s” for:
Speed
Carrying play up ice
Effort / compete
Sticking up for teammates
Scoring (he’ll score a lot of different ways).
Physical play

He’ll get “D’s” for:
Vision / awareness
200’ play / play away from puck / positioning
Shot selection

As far as prospects go, don't most teams try to give up those players who have the most potential for bust/low ceiling? *cough*brendan lemieux*cough*

Too much for Kane IMO. Like way too much...people were doubting whether Kane could even return a 1st only 2 months ago and now he's getting 1st, good prospect, an OK roster player and a conditional. Quite unlikely.

I don't think Roy is considered a "good" prospect. His D+1 and D+2 years were not good ones. He's injury prone, and has been just okay in his first year in the AHL. He still has a long way to go in his own zone. I think there's potential there, but he's more in that Bailey/Baptiste/Borgen prospect tier than the Guhle tier. As for Boedker, many SJ fans would consider him a cap dump and would not believe he provides much value to the deal - and, frankly, would be happy to clear out a $4m cap hit for the next two seasons.

Didn't Roy just blow out his knee for a 2nd time...

Exactly.... just because there are "4 pieces" doesn't mean the deal is going to be a crazy return. Jason Pominville, with term, returned 1st, 2nd, Larsson, Hackett.....
A "four piece" return could also involve a pick (like the Minnesota 4th) or a prospect (like Bailey or Baptiste) heading out along with Kane.

That roster player need not be anything more than a roster placeholder to keep the Amerks intact. The meat of the deal is the pick.

I wonder if the Washington Capitals would go hard after Evander Kane as a pure rental. Ovechkin isn't getting any younger and this might be one of the last kicks at the can for that Trotz.

I listed them earlier in this thread as a good fit.

Whose the prospect to go with the pick? Not really a prospect but I’d love to get Burakovsky but I’m not sure that’s realistic.

I dont think we'll get a Burakovsky... I went with:

1st (late 1st)
Hobbs (B/C prospect, RD, 21 Yrs old, 1st year AHL)
Connolly (NHL depth, 1 more year at 1.5)
Conditional 2nd (If Kane re-signs, or Caps win Cup)

I honesty have no idea. Depends what the offers are and how desperate a GM gets.

Id take just a first from a bubble team whose desperate to get over that package.

If I’m the Caps, I could see falling into the trap of thinking Kane will help push them over the top.

Banger with skill. They could make a lot of depth with him running a line a third line.

If Kane was sincerely interested in staying in Buffalo he'd let Botterill know. Unless his girlfriend is a Buffalo girl I don't think there's anything here to interest him much when he will have the opportunity to play on the West Coast. I'd be shocked if Vancouver doesn't make him an offer.
