So, did either the Ottawa Sun or Ottawa Citizen even mention this story? I didn't see it, but maybe it was posted.

CBC picked it up, but to my knowledge neither the Citizen nor the Sun have.

Making matters more confusing, CBC seems to incorrectly refer to the cheques as "Bank drafts" which the original story by The Day and the actual lawsuit did not.

To be fair, this is the wording in the original story.
The suit lists an unpaid draft Melnyk issued on March 17, 2017, and four more drafts issued March 19, 2017. Four of the drafts were for $200,000 apiece and the last was for $100,000. Three of the drafts were issued from 11:07 to 11:57 p.m. March 19.

Media has been bullied pretty hard by Melnyk on numerous occasions now. The local papers and TSN1200 seem to have no option but to tow the line or have their access revoked.

Well I dont really understand, selling papers is number 1 and this is a big story. Very strange.

Right, they were ambiguous. CBC explicitly said bank drafts, which is just going to further the confusion. Not blaming them, we almost all came to that same conclusion and it wasn't until a copy of the cheques surfaced and @MiscBrah provided some helpful info that it became clear that Draft was being used in a much broader sense.

Wrt why Citizen and Sun aren't covering this; there isn't much to add to the story at this point it seems. No comment from Melnyk, and I've yet to see any story add

The story is newsworthy, but aside from a sensationalist headline, I'm not sure what either paper could add.

Neither paper reported it. Its not about adding, its about acknowledging what happened.

I wonder how the extension of the current CBA will affect Melnyk. Seems like he was probably hoping for a way to get out of the up front bonus money loop hole.

I mean maybe he would be able to make that case when the league is negotiating, but I doubt anyone at the BoG would think he was arguing in good faith for the stability of small scale franchises, rather just his personal situation.

The Ottawa Business Journal did run a blurb on it, so I guess that's something, at least.

... I mean, clearly not one of the major papers, but they at least mentioned it.

So frustrating. Because this is a team that will perpetually need to fight for more revenue share to help it compete...which wouldn't be as hard an argument if all small market owners were doing everything they can to make things work:
