Well …. I I don’t remember and I don’t find it funny - he’s also not fighting a law suit when he’s talking to the media -

The few rich people I know seem to have some legal issue around them. I googled 4 sport owners off the top of my head (Kraft, Thomson, Rogers, and Gillette) and they all have pages of legal issues …

Boats and Casinos feels peddy compared to some of the stuff I scanned quickly … I think we spend way to much time worrying about him… and not enough supporting the team.

you can dislike the owner and still support the team - Alfie and EK did it.

If the Sens were put up for sale 6 months later then they were Melnyck would never own the tram because he had his Stock Exchnage fraud case come to light which was the start of his criminal and financial trouble and got him kicked out of Biovail / The NHL doesn’t bring in an owner who’s finances are that vulnerable and who’s lied to a federal body

got The Score notification that almost said Sens sold to a new group, and got slightly aroused until double checking and it said Pens instead :(

Specifically, the claim alleges Melnyk “at times used profanity and levelled insults at executive team members, including constantly calling into question their competency. Mr. Melnyk sent abusive emails to the executive team and frequently threatened to dismiss them.”

Former Ottawa Senators executive sues Melnyk, team for $1.55M | Ottawa Citizen

That was back in 2017. If that came out in 2021, it would've been a much bigger deal (a lot has changed in 5 years).

Who knows if there's anything there beyond profanity and threatening jobs, but there have been rumors for years. And who knows what kind of non-disclosure agreements were signed with settlements, that would prevent former employees from speaking out.

But the media is coming for billionaires (and rightfully so, in many cases), and Eugene Melnyk is a Mr.Burns like caricature who would be easy to target.

I think execs are more directly in the line of fire - they can at least, loose their job. It felt like the OP was attempting to allude to something more recent.

It's not just executives. Look at Robert Sarver, owner of the Phoenix Suns.

Allegations of racism and misogyny within the Phoenix Suns: Inside Robert Sarver's 17-year tenure as owner

I have no idea what Melnyk is like behind closed doors. But if you're a billionaire with a not-so-great public reputation... you should be looking over your shoulder right now. Things that were deemed acceptable 5 or 10 years ago are no longer acceptable today.

I doubt that goes anywhere - we’ll see I guess. I can’t see it going criminal, maybe it goes civil, or maybe the league fines him. Anything short of removing him as an owner is a free pass.

I know people who have worked for Geener, and I’m sure there are brutal stories … but I’d be shocked if the league pulled the team from him. He might like that - they’d have to buy him out.

It doesn't need to be criminal, not even close.

I can almost guarantee that Sarver will be forced to sell. But that's the NBA, and Adam Silver (along with the players) have been much better at holding owners, and executives, to account than Bettman and the NHL.

If something came out in the NHL, with Melnyk, specifically? Who knows how it'd go. The Blackhawks owners were able to keep themselves at arms length by having McDonogh, Bowman and Quenneville take the fall (although if anyone thinks they didn't know what was going on, I have a monorail to sell you...).

If something came out about Melnyk, would he have a fall guy? And would Bettman and other owners protect him? Somehow I doubt it. Rocky Wirtz has made the NHL and other owners a TON of money by revitalizing that organization in one of the biggest US markets. Melnyk hasn't done anything close for the league or other owners. I'm not sure there'd be near as much loyalty.

Fair enough - I won’t pretend to know these situations well… but with Chicago’s ownership not even scratched I can’t see Melynk having a team stripped from him for being a jerk … unless it’s worse than that.

Didn't they pretty much force the former Clippers owner out for racist comments?

*I am not insinuating Melnyk has done that

if Bettman wants to get a stadium built in Ottawa and he knows Melnyck has to sell to make it happen he could start looking under the hood and see if he can stir up the pot to get some presssure going. There are reports of poor behaviour out there so it wouldn’t be odd to have a look at it.

Eventually Melnyck ownership will come down to if he can afford and get himself into a land deal in Ottawa. The city and some local richies tried to get what looked like a good opportunity going. The Franchise value should be at least $100 milllion more then it is and the NHL wants to be a part of $4-5 Billion investments like Lebreton. Melnyck can’t just hole up in Kanata and stay there for her next 20 years. NHL teams are built for big land deals and he’s got to get something going

I'm not expecting any action from Bettman but of course you're right that they know a downtown arena is vital for the franchise ever thriving rather than just surviving and want that to happen. Melnyk meets the minimum requirements of an owner and on the subject of him being removed for transgressions, there would need to be said transgressions for that to happen. I don't mean this nefariously, but he can't hide out in Kanata for 20 years because its extremely unlikely he will be alive that long being a liver donor recipient. His building won't be an issue for him in his lifetime if he so chooses imo.

Penguins have an arena and land around it to develope. Anybody who buys the Sens has to build an arena.

Or maybe new ownership will have a good rapport with the city and other local businesses and won't have the mentality of "casino or bust".

Did you read the story? I can't believe people can sue for that

We have heard this story a lot
That the NHL was the one to say no? And that the price tag had to be $750M at least for the offer to be considered? That is news to me at least

Was it a Kevin Francis scoop?

No , I think the 750M Friedman make reference for the price for the Pens team. I think for the Sens, the league want the deal not under 550 - 600 M and the offer reported was 425M
