ESPN: Getzlaf's comments on Carlyle

Getzlaf's statement could not be any more true: Skating drills blow! I highly doubt we will land Getzlaf anywho. Time to stop that winning and get Mackinnon :yo:

The usual players won't be. NYR, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston etc. Most of them have little space to use on yet another forward and a lot of them need to upgrade their defence. FA's are not dumb to just look at the teams standings. They'll obviously realize that if they were to join the team and play a position that we are sorely lacking that the team will improve tremendously. FA's don't join a team that are years away from competing, we can become a cup contender in this one summer if we can pull a minnesota. But at the end of the day it's about whether or not the player likes the city and if the money is enough.

Getzlaf is the last person who should be talking about players coming prepped and ready to go. Horrendous previous season.
 
Realistically what teams other than the Leafs will have both the cap room and financial resources to sign one or both of these guys?
 
Getzlaf Wife is from LA area, the whole Hermosa/Newport area is where all the Hockey players live (Kings/Ducks).

They are all a tight nit group, a lot of the wife's hang out together.

Also Getzlaf Wife's family is all from the area. I doubt Getzlaf is going to move, he has a young son, and a newborn on the way.
 
what a shock, media and Leaf fans will blow this up into a big deal.

And this is fair. But just because all those things you say might be true doesn't mean it isn't worth the attempt.

I criticized the **** out of the Leafs for making no attempt to sign Kovalchuk. You haven't heard me say a thing about Brad Richards because I know they at least tried, which is all I can ask of them.

I don't know if we have a chance or not.... but on paper we could fit them in salary wise. I highly doubt it though.

So you've spoken to them and they've informed you of this have they? I am not saying they will come to Toronto, just that you haven't the slightest idea of what they will or won't do.

And I saw something yesterday (when I remember the source I will post the link) saying that Perry wants to play closer to his parents and the rest of his family.

If you have the time and energy, look at all the clubs that already have number one centers, plus all the other clubs that lack either cap space or budget plus a couple of non TO locations that would have to kidnap an FA to bring him there. There really aren't that many options if he decided he wanted to leave.

He already has a Cup, he gets to play with Kessel which is likely a lot more attractive than beside a Kris Versteeg or a Drew Stafford and maybe he wants to be the #1 game in town. If he actually wanted to explore his options they would need to show him positive potential rather than another floundering year so that means at least getting out of the bottom 10. It might be academic if the Leafs flounder some more.

Based on most of the other big name FAs I have to think Getz is 80% likely not to go anywhere. Of the two, I think Perry would be the one to go, but still most likely he stays. There is some concern on the Ducks Board they might lose one (yes just Board members but they know their situation better than we do). I can't figure out what the issue there could be. Schultz wouldn't give them a chance but Selanne will die in a Ducks uniform:confused: They sucked last season but are just a year removed from 99pts. It doesn't strike me as a place to run away from but not good timing for them to have another bad season if G & P are pending FA.
 
Don't get why people convince themselves were going to sign every big FA. Highly doubt we get Getzlaf or Perry.
