There's a reasonable chance that his injury cut off about 70 games this year though. He was definitely the leading candidate to start the year with the team ahead of Brannstrom who the team clearly would have preferred to take their time with.

Yes there is which is why i said it was unfortunate. He could have stabilized his situation

At this ppoint the depth charts are quite different

Why? I said if they hit their ceilings

If they hit their ceilings they are all top pair players and they'll never get played 1 2 3 on the left. One will switch sides or one will get traded
Tampa just won the cup with three number 1 left defencemen lol

Sometimes I just chuckle about the hype around Wolanin. The reality of his situation is that he is 25 years old with 43 games under his belt.

That is a massive bust for JBD if he doesn't surpass that

I'm good with any opinion that says he looked good in his short stints with the team and it is truly unfortunate for the Wolanin family that he slipped on a puck last year. Doing so may well have cost him his career.

We have

Chabot
Zaitsev
Gudbranson
Reilly
Brown
Zub
Brannstrom

Then you have to start looking at roles on a team

Chabot is the left side puck mover. Brannstrom with added strength might play that role as well. Reilly is a leftie with quite a bit more experience and is bigger.

How much left side puck moving do we need?

They clearly want to play hard physical hockey. Is that Wolanin's strength? No. And he very well get out puck moved by the other left hand puck movers

short term is he better the Reilly?
Long term is he better than Brannstrom?

I hope he can become what some guys here think but if i had to bet, I'd be betting on him being on the wrong side of the numbers game
I like Wolanin a lot I think he is a classic late bloomer also he is way more NHL ready than Brann who might not even start in the nhl this year

I think we can ride with chabot bran and wolanin this year and than in a year or two shift bran over to rd for Sanderson or Sanderson shifts over

I guess all im saying is Wolanin's injury hit pause on his career and until we have reason to believe otherwise, should not be viewed as career altering. The expectations for him now imo are the same as they were prior to his injury.

They’re really trying to make sure our younger guys are comfortable and feel protected out there. Specifically brannstrom I’m thinking.
Not a bad move

Where did you see that? From what I saw he’s plenty mobile for his size. You have clips? I’ll reserve judgement in regards to a timeline till he plays a year or two in NCAA.

I’m not particularly sure why we “need” Brannstrom on the right this season.

His mobility is OK. He can't make decent pass to save his life at this point.

How well does a guy like Karlsson clear the front of the net or break up a cycle. There are many different skills players can have.

And Wayne Gretzky couldn't body check beyond the bantam level.

Some skills are more fundamental than others.

Gretzky doesn’t survive the early years without Semenko. As I said, a team needs varied skill sets.

There are aspects of Wolanin's game that I really like, he moves the puck well and there is a deceptiveness to his game with the puck that is valuable, that said he has some pretty big warts in his game. I don't know if he can defend at the NHL level, wether it be in zone coverage or defending the rush he really struggled in the NHL. It's unfortunate he got injured prior to the start of the last season because it was an important opportunity for him. I'm sure he will be given the chance to showcase himself in the upcoming season, but the leash will be short imo. For me Brannstrom has shown to be more well rounded as a player, there's been flashes of an offensive ability similar to Wolanin, although not as consistent. Wolanin is no longer waiver exempt so it's likely he will get a good look out of the gate but if Brannstrom overtakes him there will be no looking back.

Hahaha.

I think we're done here.
You obviously not old enough to remember 1980. This is getting off topic anyway.

You obviously prefer a team built like the leafs all flash and dash with zero character and grit Good for you, it frees you up in the spring for other things. I prefer teams that have skill, size and grit. I like aggressive hockey, which means I’m forced to continue watching through late April in May.

Really?

I watched Gretzky plenty in the early 80s, including a few times in person.

Semenko was a mean enforcer but Gretzky was fine when he wasn't around.

As for skill versus "toughness"? I prefer both. Tyler Kleven doesn't have much skill right now. If you think he's going to be in the NHL by age 20 that's cool. But I'd say that means we'll have the worst D in the league at that point.

Klevin is 4 years away IMO. 2 years at least at UND and a year in the A.

Yeah but when you acquire players, even during a rebuild, you don't HAVE to acquire all mediocre (at best) players who are tough. Try a few different things.

well if we can get a legit top 6 or top 4 id be all for it, who do you suggest?

A stop gap d-man was kind of expected as Brannstrom and Wolanin are still young, and JBD and Sanderson likley join the team at the end of the year. We did have to acquire cap

Anthony Duclair for one. No need to trade a 4th or 5th for him either. For other forwards look to acquire Tyler Johnson with some retention by Tampa.

Or overpay for one year of a better D. Give Bogosian $2M for one year. He's not great but he's better than Gudbranson or Brown.

There are countless options. I'd rather have Jaros or Lajoie cutting their teeth in the NHL than have Gudbranson.

im interested to see what happens with Duke, and some of the remaining free agents. I have no interest at all in Tyler Johnson personally, not a fan of his game or contract- but some of the sweetner rumors could make that interesting

Bogo would have been a great fit, I thought he was going to be a target of ours for sure. Id take Guds over Lajoie and Jaros pretty easily however
