Erie Otters 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part I

As much grief I give Dave Brown, I have to give credit where credit is due. As a manager, I still will question his decisions. As interim coach, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in Niagara. He patted each player on the back after every shift. He clapped when Burns made a huge save or when we drew penalties for PPs. Every time we had a TV time out Wes Wolfe drew up a play. The players seemed in high spirits. Now this should be the norm, but after two seasons with Butler it was refreshing to see life from the coaching staff.

This weekend was nothing to hang their heads about. You don’t play to lose, but we controlled most of the game play. We skated with two of the top teams in the league and two of the better goalies in Parsons and Flores. We don’t have many days to practice with two road trips this week. The biggest thing to do is stop taking penalties especially Ty Henry although the interference call was weak.

We should play well against OS and Sarnia this week. I’d like to think we can keep up skating with London and make it interesting.

Any news on SB?

I can’t imagine SB will be back.
It’s well known around that he is an abusive person. I have heard more and more stories from the past since this whole Erie thing happened.
Not the type of person you want coaching teenagers.
He's an old school hard ass coach. Anyone who has been around hockey knows that. You would think some vetting would have been done by Erie. Cue up the next Erie coach. Hopefully the next one lasts for a while.

Crazy to think during uncertain times, it could be our last.

They were too cheap and desperate for “a name” to consider the potential negatives with the decision. I hated it from day 1 so personally, I’m glad he’s gone and got a bit exposed by this vs just fired for performance. Obviously, if not for this, we might have had to deal with him for another 1-2 years.. yawn

As for who’s next.. I would suggest Erie brings in a new GM to do that but I highly doubt they will. If I could bet this on DraftKings, I would wager a solid amount that DB keeps his spot and doesn’t have much pushback internally. So that means we have to rely on him for another coaching search. Yippie! Maybe this early exit for SB gives them an extra few months to conduct a proper, thorough search? I won’t hold my breath. It’s more like they just prompt from within since it’s cheap and easy

In the Hunter era is Dickinson the best D?

Why is this in the Erie thread? Doesn’t seem relevant…

Definitely hard to imagine we bring in a new GM, especially if JW daughters/estate don't want a lot to do with the team.

I guess while we are at it, given the uncertainty of the future Erie COULD be hiring their last HC and DB could be our last GM. If Dave stays on board I can't see things going well over the next several, pivotal, years for Erie's long term success.

30 years is a long time to be coaching in any league, but the world has changed a lot in the last decade or so. Simply cannot get away with being a prick like one could in the past, just doesn't fly anymore and some of these old school guys clearly haven't been able to adapt.

It’s about time. I’m glad Erie stuck to their standards and whatever happened wasn’t swept under the rug.
Stick to their standards?
Why bring in a coach accused of having sex with a minor that has a long history of misconduct issues to begin with?
If anything the team should also review their hiring processes and determine how his pattern of problems was overlooked in a time where theres a massive microscope on Hockey.
The organization is just as at fault here for putting the players in this situation with a horrible hire in my opinion.

...in his time with North Bay Battalion...I never saw a positve player interaction on the bench from SB....mistakes and referees were the only time he fired up.....totally different kind of play when he left....Otters can be better...

I think they just hired whoever they could/knew to turn the team around. At the time of hire, we essentially had a hole at the bottom of the ship and slapped as much duct tape on it to stay afloat. That’s why SB was brought in and wasn’t expected to be a long term hired.

I think accused and acquitted are two different things. If he was accused why did NB keep him around so long? Other teams kept him employed knowing the same circumstances. We aren’t saints and have our own issues. Why didn’t the league step in and say the Otters couldn’t employ him?

I just think that their standards are a no tolerance for being racist. If the team is expected to be held to those standards, the coaching staff should be as well. The league has all these policies and SB crossed the line.

His reputation speaks for itself.
Sounds like he just got away with something disgusting and there are more than enough situations and example that point at him being a disgusting person.

Probably shouldn't rush into anything. Take the offseason to do a proper coach search and get someone to really build around. Even if that means you just run a lame duck interim coach the rest of the year.
Its tough because this was the year they were supposed to peak in. They were supposed to go all in this year but based on the trade deadline inaction and the possibility of not having a true head coach for the back end of the year......guess not
