Watched the highlights of last night’s game. The McCall kid looked good in the one play where he regrouped and then threw it cross ice to Spence/Fimis/Alfano on the fourth goal. Thats obviously the only clip I saw of him but he looked pretty polished there. I know he’ll be 20 in two weeks but still. I’m sure Stan likes the +4 in two games too.

On a broadcasting note, it sounds like somebody gave Bednard the phrase “open look” for Christmas :)

With the Schaefer absence and Ambrosio hurt he has been leaned on very heavily.

You can see his lack of chemistry at times with the team. Being out of position on breakouts, passes to no one, or even running into or skating in front of teammates. I fully believe if he was here from the start all of those would be non-issues at this point in the season.

With that, he is definitely a top 4 defender on the team. Semantics would argue he is 1, 2, 3 or 4 with Daviault, Henry, and Sauder also being in those top 2 lines and possibly still a top 4 if Schaefer was here. I'd probably put him ahead of Daviault.

McCall looks good for just joining the team !! He was on point for the PP and one of the better defenders last night as well .. Hughes looks good too..

In fact those 2 are doing circles around both Mess and Holomego ..

I mean Christian Gihriny put up more points in a month than Mess has in 3 years .. wtf

I have been following with interest the discussion regarding possible trades, and what Erie's strategy should be, both approaching the trade deadline and for next year.

I think it is very hard to posit specific potential trades, as we do not know what is going on behind the scenes. That is not to say that it isn't entertaining to think about what could be.

To me, though, the question is a more general one. i.e., whether Erie should be a buyer, a seller, or stand pat. I think the answer to that question depends on what is a realistic end game for Erie in the Western Conference.

Today, January 1, Erie sits in the fourth seed with 40 points. Of the teams ahead of them, Windsor is a lock for the first or second seed, as it has all but wrapped up the West Division title. For Erie to move up, it would need to catch either London or Kitchener, or both.

Erie is 13 points behind Kitchener and 18 points behind London, with three games in hand on each. There is no indication that either of those two teams is running out of gas. Given our injury situation and less than adequate BUG, I cannot see any realistic trade(s) that would enable Erie to close the gap between Erie and either of those two teams. As a practical matter, I think Erie's ceiling is the No. 4 seed.

On the other end, Erie is 15 points ahead of the No. 9 team in the conference, Owen Sound, with three games in hand. Even if Erie did absolutely nothing to improve its roster, I cannot see Erie falling so far as to not make the playoffs.

Saginaw is presently the fifth seed with 35 points, Flint is the sixth seed with 34 points, Sarnia is the seventh seed with 31 points and Sault Ste. Marie is the eighth seed with 30 points. Erie has three games in hand on each of those teams, except Sarnia. Erie has six games in hand on Sarnia.

It is hard to say, but I think Erie can hang unto the fourth seed even if it makes no moves. But regardless of whether if it does or does not hang unto the fourth seed, it is still headed toward a first round match up against most likely Saginaw or Flint. The only difference might be home ice advantage.

The winner of that first round match up will almost certainly be facing London in the second round. Even if Erie upgrades substantially, I do not see Erie beating London in the second round.

In sum, the only reasons I see for Erie upgrading at the trade deadline would be: (1) to enhance its chances to secure home ice advantage in the first round; and (2) to enhance its chances of beating Saginaw/Flint in the first round.

Conversely, if Erie stands pat, it will still be in the playoffs, will still have a decent chance of hanging unto the fourth seed, will still most likely be facing either Saginaw or Flint, and will still have a decent chance of winning that first round match up.

I do not wish to overly downplay the value in getting to the second round. That would be a significant step forward, given where the franchise has been since it last won the OHL title.

That being said, if this analysis of the situation is correct, the relative value of upgrading versus standing pat simply is not that great. It does not justify spending a lot of assets that mortgages the future. At the moment, I would say that making a move to upgrade the BUG that does not cost a lot of assets should be done, if for no other reason than to avoid running Erliden into the ground and getting some insurance against an injury to Erliden. Beyond that, I think any trade would need to be extremely attractive and not cost a lot to be justified.

Erie has three more games before the trade deadline on January 10, at Kitchener on the 3rd, home against Windsor on the 4th, and at Guelph on the 8th. It shall be very interesting to see how those games go, and what impact they might have on what Erie does at the deadline.

Very well put and I think Saginaw is in a similar situation. Once we get Chernyshov and Willis back, we will settle into the 4/5 slot. Even if we happen to beat you guys, London would sweep us pretty easily. Both of our teams are in a bit of a purgatory state this deadline, but maybe with opposite decisions to make.

Our third line was killer tonight and the fourth line no better.

Headrick has 2 goals in 3 games, Challenger has 1 goal in 28 games. Great work Dave Brown!

Something is coming to a head real soon. Lucky we only had one fighting penalty at the end.

If i were Erliden I'd be pissed at my team for no offense.

He’s definitely a one and done. I can’t see him returning next year. He holds the team on his back and they can’t get him the win.

I think we had a solid first period considering previous outings. I think once Kitchener scored, it sucked the life out of us.

Quite honestly, if I was wearing a blue sweater on the ice tonight, I’d be ashamed of the effort. We wouldn’t have an off day tomorrow if I were the coach.

We are missing pieces on the back end and we need support on the third and fourth line.

I am not singing the praises for Burns, but tonight he looked good in relief. We still need a BUG, but you can’t fault him tonight for the effort. I felt that was the best we saw of him this season. He made timely saves and kept them in it.

Did Erliden get hurt?

Nope. I honestly believe he’s tired of holding the team down. The team doesn’t play in front of him, so he didn’t show any effort for them. I don’t think he moved at all to save any of the goals he allowed.

Costanzo having a really off night could’ve played in his head. Costanzo had a rough warm up.

If he quit on his team at this level...

IMO that points to much larger issues brewing in the locker room. One doesn't simply just "quit" when they are so close to the top leagues in the world.

The team staked him to a 3-0 lead in five minutes, so I don’t know why somebody said they weren’t playing in front of him (I know it wasn’t you).

It didn’t look like he quit to me. He just had a bad night. Butler probably wasn’t 100% on starting him anyway because he faced 40 shots the night before.

To respond back to the original comment, we need defense. The defense led to Erliden getting scored on.

In terms of quitting, he’s likely fatigued from the night before. He made some insane saves in Kitchener that Saturday he needed more support. It’s clear we need a move on the back end.

He’s one of the hardest workers on the team, but we can’t solely rely on him everyday to get the job done.

I would agree, Erie needs another solid D. With MS out for a long stretch and Ambrosio out indefinitely, the team has been essentially playing 4 d with some relief once in a while from the other 2. It becomes even more obvious in the 3rd. Would like to see the TOI, but guessing 4 of those guys are logging over 25-27 min a game That is not a situation you can play through for very long, especially playing top teams in with speed like Windsor and with little rest. Looks like they have 2 stretches in January with 3 games in 3 days. Good luck with that. Need to grab a 3rd pairing guy that can log some minutes at the deadline. probably get one for not a lot.
