After watching last night's performance, and looking back over the season as a whole, I think that it is difficult to conclude that there is any hope whatsoever for this season. Train wreck, tire fire, dumpster fire, etc., are all reasonable descriptions of what we are seeing.
This is not just a bad stretch of games. The team is becoming more and more undisciplined and dysfunctional in the extreme. There is something going on within this team that is not good, and it is getting worse. I have little inside information, but it is hard to believe that what we are seeing on the ice is not reflective of what is going on internally.
There are rumors that Molnar is dissatisfied with his ice time with Nitra and that he will report after the World Juniors. I certainly hope that happens, but would he want to report to the Otters given their current state?
I personally feel that the 2022-23 season is not salvageable, at least in terms of making the playoffs and making a decent showing there. However, they cannot let this disaster unfold without doing anything, and they cannot wait until the end of the season to begin to right the ship. If 2023-24 is to be something better than what we presently have, the they need to start now,
First, Adams needs to be dismissed immediately. The reasons for this are obvious, and have been discussed on this board at length. No need to repeat them here. Even if the replacement is only "interim", it would send the right message, i.e., that things must change.
Second, Brown needs to be dismissed as soon as possible. Again, the reasons for this are obvious, and becoming more apparent game by game. Frankly, I would also do this immediately if I had anyone available who could manage this job. He and Adams bear the ultimate responsibility for what we are seeing on the ice.
Third, I would trade Kyrou immediately. I know this would be controversial, and that one could argue that his trade value would be maximized at the trade deadline (although there have already been some "blockbuster" trades in the OHL this year). However, my reasons for making this suggestion go beyond getting maximum trade value.
In my judgment, Kyrou is hurting this team very badly. He is without a doubt the most talented player on the team, and he can be fun to watch at times. However, he has become very undisciplined. At first, I thought he was simply trying to do too much, but there is a line between trying to do too much and being selfish. Unfortunately, I think he has crossed over that line by what is now a fairly wide margin.
At times, I have had difficulty in determining whether he is playing forward or defense. He is all over the ice, frequently out of position, and hangs on to the puck far too long. The result is that he sometimes scores highlight reel goals, but most of the time his teammates are standing around watching, and he frequently coughs up the puck when he tries to stick handle through two or three opponents because he is unwilling to dish the puck off. Last night was only the latest example. Kingston's first two goals resulted directly from his turning the puck over in situations where he could have gotten rid of the puck had he wanted to do so. He then added to this by taking a needless penalty which led to Kingston's fourth goal, and which put the game out of reach completely.
I cannot help but think that when your best player is doing these sorts of things, it has a very bad effect on his teammates. Your best player should make the players around him better. Unfortunately, I think the opposite has occurred. Kyrou is ultimately responsible for his play, but a good coach would not have let it get this far.
You might call this addition by subtraction, or simply a situation where both the player and the team would benefit from a change of scenery. In any event, I think this might be best for both the player and the team.
I believe there is enough talent on this team, even without Kyrou, to be a respectable OHL team if they play as a team in a very consciously disciplined manner. They might not go far in the playoffs, but at least they would be interesting to watch and something to build on for 2023-24. I think this process needs to begin now, though, rather than waiting until the summer.
