Erie probabky drafted Molnar with the same expectations they had with Slafkovsky last year.
They’re hoping after the NHL draft, the player signs a contract with his NHL team (Young EU players almost always have an NHL out clause) is then sent down to Erie to develop post draft - similar to Tomas Hamara in Kitchener.
These drafts aren’t always expecting the kid to come over right after - calculated risks are taken all the time. Do you take a less talented player who is guaranteed to report, or a 16/17 year old kid that you’re hoping reports after being drafted into the NHL?
The biggest problem is outside of Kulakov, Erie hadn't had an import since Sopa (via trade). The last two imports drafted were Cjeka and Puddubnyi.
So do you draft a "home run" player that never reports year after year or do you end up taking a slightly above average player you know will report?
It is amazing to think of the what if with Molnar and Slafkovsky, but the bigger issue IMO is land imports consistenly.
