Epic Calder Race 2024-25

I feel like it’s been like this the whole season. When Michkov was lighting it up, Philly fans were loud, when Celebrini went on a tear, Sharks fans were loudest, and now we’re seeing it with Hutson. At this point, I believe it’s Hutson’s but that could change if another one of those guys goes on a tear. It’s weird how personal it gets for people, it’s really not an important award in the long run
Honestly, the only reason I ever was loud in this thread was because the Russian trolls were annoying.

The haters should just make peace with the fact that Hutson is going to inevitably win that trophy, and start enjoying his glorious rookie year. He's going to win it, because he's putting up numbers that are stacking up on a Historical level. Is he always going to be the best player of his rookie class? Perhaps not, but he is right now, without a shadow of a doubt.

The fact that Hutson is The One, doesn't mean that Wolf, Celebrini or Mitchkov are bad; on the contrary, this Calder race is one of the more interesting in recent years. Celebrini projects to be a great two-way centers, Mitchkov have shown glimpse of brilliance, and Wolf could be the next great goalie. We don't know.
At the end of the day, they might end up with a better career than Hutson.

But as of now, you can bitch and moan all you want, use your weird "advanced stats" that nobody cares about to form some stupid argument that don't make senses to nobody but yourself to justify why Hutson should end up as the second best player, behind your own favorite player, etc, in the end, it ain't going to matter: Hutson is almost PPG as a rookie defenseman, which is f***ing insane, and shows no signs of stopping.

Unless Hutson gets hurt or stops producing, the Calder is his
Can we call our opinions “facts”, or are you reserving that for yourself?

I’m going to just comment on Hutsons play as I watch almost every habs game. Michkov and Celebrinni by all accounts are amazing and I’m really rooting for Michkov as a habs fan because I think Demidov is a very comparable KHL season to him with less minutes played.

Anyways back to Hutson. The combination of this kids agility, stick handling, lateral movement, passing ability, and IQ is other worldly. I think the hype he is getting is very warranted. He is constantly and consistently generating scoring chances. I think he’s pretty unlucky to have 3 goals as well. I expect he will have around 9-10 goals by the end of the year. But even when he makes a simple play he usually does it in a way that his teammate gets the puck in a spot that’s just slightly better than other guys who make the move and pass. It’s hard to explain but he just does little things that you would think anyone could make that pass and they could but it would just be a little different be that a little slower or in a different spot etc. being that small is probably beneficial for his game. He is just more agile and add in his little subtle fakes or fake skate backs as I call it, nobody can really stop it. Defensively he is just fine. His IQ and angling is elite, he’s surprisingly strong for 162lbs but his weapon is his stick. He’s absolutely pin point accuracy on breaking up plays with that stick. I don’t know what his ceiling is. He’s 0.83ppg currently and it’s not crazy to think he could be 100 point guy in his peak. Im not cautious in being overly excited about players. I enjoy the hype. Life is too short and hockey isn’t life and death. I’m all for the hype on players. Being cautious does nothing for me in my personal life lol. Enjoy the ride. The Lane train is f***ing real

Opinions ain't fact
Opinions are stuff that you think could happen, and can be right or wrong, like "Hutson ain't going to Win the Calder" ain't a fact, it's an opinion and honestly, a dumb one at that

Dustin Wolf playing his 26th game of the season tonight. His Sv% is 4th best in the league among all goalies who have played 20+ games this season.

Wolf carrying this team to the playoffs. He should win the Calder at this point but probably won’t.
If the Flames make it into the playoffs, Wolf will get top 5 Vezina trophy votes. If the Flames make it to the dance and the Habs don’t, doubtful Hutson wins it. At the end of the day winning matters, especially to those who vote on these rewards.

Wolf's last 10 starts. If he can cut out the few bad goals, he's threatening to regain his AHL form. He just might pull this off, which would be such a great story given he was picked fourth last in his draft year bc he's small.

Mannnnn…. It’s times like this that I wish this board had more than 6 flames fans. How are we supposed to compete with the screeching habs hoard? As the saying goes, in Montreal, the habs are more important than Jesus Christ himself. If anybody bashes Hudson, they might as well be heathens.

Anyways, wolf had another great game. Absolute black hole offensively though so he’s probably not winning the Calder however.

There are more than 6 of us... it's like 9

As far as this current Calder race is concerned, I had Celebrini first, Wolf second, and Hutson/Michkov tied for third earlier this year, in December.

My list has since changed as I've watched more games.

Here's how those changes shape up; I'd now have Wolf first, Celebrini and Hutson tied for second, and Michkov a more-or-less distant fourth.

And the reason for that is because Dustin Wolf's last stretch of games have been incredible for Calgary. He is seemingly single-handedly willing them to a playoffs spot right now, which is incredible to see.

Celebrini has kept up his high level of play for the Sharks, but Hutson has really been on fire recently and kind of caught-up to Celebrini I feel in his importance to his team/quality of play.

I say that, but Hutson's games against Toronto last Saturday and Detroit last night were amongst his poorest ones of the season. So maybe, if Hutson doesn't go back to the frankly astounding level of play he sustained since mid-December and early-January, and Celebrini keeps trudging along like it's nobody's business, I'd end up having Wolf first, Celebrini second, and Hutson clearly in third place.

Anyhow, if there is a year for a goalie to win the Calder, Wolf's current season is basically the perfect archetype for it and I think he fully deserves the trophy at this point.

And I say that as a Montreal Canadiens fan that has been loving Hutson's play to death in the last month or so.

This is how you have a reasoned and unbiased take. Everyone should learn.

I'm honestly surprised more DET fans aren't advocating for Edvinsson as being more deserving than Hutson. He's been a monster this year.

I know which one would be more impactful in meaningful playoff games. Hutson's 2nd percentile defense is... something.

Because he isn't a rookie, that is the major reason why. And even if he was he is still being nearly doubled in points by hutson.

Since we’re arguing EV points for Celebrini vs Hutson it should be worth noting that Wolf has a .942% at 5v5

If it weren’t for the flames having one of the worst penalty kills in the league his stats would be even better
