Svechnikov is 16 only, he can't be considered a star power.

We'll I would wait to make that judgment, he was Russia's 2nd leading scorer as an under ager at the U17's earlier in the year. Guys 6'2, maybe 16, but has physicality of an 18 year old.

The fact that it is banned means that it must be eradicated. But the political question is why was it banned now after so many years on the market, coinciding with a general crackdown on Russia, knowing that it is likely that many athletes would be caught in the transition? It would help if a case were laid out showing that its use creates a competitive advantage that could mean the difference between winning and losing.

Meldonium is an anti-ischemic drug which is used, whether it works or not, to treat people with ischemia. The fact that it has never been approved in North America may assess its level of effectiveness. These are people suffering from some form of heart failure, who have severe trouble getting oxygen to their lungs. Starting to get a picture? In fact, mainly elderly people suffer from ischemia. The legitimate question is, how much of a difference does Meldonium make in the bloodstream of elderly people, and is it sufficient to create a competitive advantage among young, international class star athletes whose hearts are like turbo-jet engines? Does Meldonium have the effect of a mini-EPO, producing more unnecessary red blood cells than even a highly-trained, extraordinarily well-developed cardiovascular system can use? That hasn't been demonstrated, and is a main basis for the outcry from those who smell a rat!

Aren't there NA equivalents to meldonium which did not end up being banned? Meh, the whole scandal around this drug seems more political than anything. The Russian team will have to do its best with what it's got.

OTTAWA, April 13. /TASS/. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Wednesday the meldonium concentration of below 1 µg/ml in a doping test of an athlete carried out before March 1, 2016 is permissible.

Unfortunately, the timing of this pronouncement by WADA is too late to reinstate the U18 team. This team was well-prepared and had an excellent chance to win Gold in this tournament. Its like saying that a little bit of EPO or steroids is acceptable!

It's official: WADA screwed up a bunch of 17 yo hockey players and other athletes from Russia. Incompetent or perhaps simply corrupted organization. I am sure nobody will be held responsible since WADA is out of control and has to answer to no-one.

Also I am curious to see how many of those media outlets who was saying the Russians were doping big time will give update on the current state of meldonium.

So Maria Sharapova is expected to play at Roland Garros, so U-18 Russia is defintely screwed since most of the kids could only play in this tournament only once in their lifetime.

Minulin and Popugaev 2 good U18 players in the WHL not named to the team, anyone know why? Also why no Sokolov?

Popugaev is still in the WHL play-offs, Sokolov is having a shoulder surgery, Minulin rumoured to be injured too.

WADA's case against Meldonium, which was jumped past speed warp to take advantage of the political climate, is now disintegrating in their faces. Don't look for any Meldonium-exclusions in the WC.

It had nothing to do with politics. WADA had noted several Easter European (not just Russian) athletes test results had the substance and began to take notice.

oh, popugaev should be done soon no way they get through Brandon.

Anyways Russian goaltending looks like it might be a problem. Goalie looks deep in his net, no confidence - 2 goals on first 3 shots.

Russian team got beaten down 8-2 by the US team. This is abysmal. The whole meldonium story is just an excuse to get at Russian athletes, as if athletes from other countries don't use any equivalents.

This is ridiculous, first they cause the Russian team to be dismantled, then they step back on their claims against meldonium. I mean this is ridiculous.

Definitely a conspiracy cause the US had problems, in the past, advancing past Russia at the U18.

They haven't stepped back from their claims. It's still banned. They just don't know, like everyone else it seems, how long it takes to clear. WADA should have given a longer grace period from the outset. And Russian officials should have ensured that the players stopped taking it the moment it was on the WADA watch list last year. Maybe they did, but it doesn't sound like it.

WADA are screw ups and they're pushing politics into sports imo. But the Russian officials screwed up big time - they should have warned the players! I don't know how 'loud' WADA proclaims their doping update, but it seems that many Russian officials missed it. Some of the fault definitely lies on their shoulders. I'm very frustrated at the fact that this Russian team will now be disgraced, especially because of politics.

I mean, 8-2 against the US - that is a spit in the face for Russian hockey. The US team has always been excellent and I'm by no means taking away anything from their skill, but Team Russia has to at least play on equal terms with Team US.

Have you watched the game? Have you watched/followed junior hochey, especially at U18 level? there is absolutely nothing special in that result. It was actually an even game. Zhukov crapped the bed big time, but that happens. I'm anyway kind of n favor of not having a dominant G prospect in net fr the NT like in recent years to evalate the skaters better. It is juniot hockey. It is emotional. After not hitting an open net for a 3-2 lead out guys just lost the ballnce after getting scored on two times right away. Again it was mostly on Zhukov too, who wasn't good at all. And it as the first game of the tournamet. Good way to start against a top team. The players won't get complacent now and will put some effort into net games, I'm sure.

And no, they don't have to play close games against US every time. They are kids, they are younger than the Americans. It's a great eperience for them. I'm definitely watching the game against Switzerland tonight.

It is ONLY about politics from the get go. Otherwise they would ban equivalent drugs used in the west.
