Not sure if anyone will claim either Bolduc or Engvall, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they are claimed. One thing I am certain of, it will be no big loss in either case.

Engvall’s contract will go down as one of the worst in Islanders history if he’s no longer with the big club. Was a bad signing then and even a worse signing now. Displeased with his timid play both Roy and Lamiorello may be sending a message to Engvall. Don’t care how much you make learn to sacrifice your body for the team or don’t play at all.

I’m surprised by the Engvall waiving. Not because it’s unwarranted but because it’s an admission by Lou that his long term contract was a mistake.

Engvall is still the same soft player he was before and since the deal was inked. In fact, one could argue that he exceeded his low bar of expectations in last season’s playoffs.

Bolduc looked improved but Cho was the better option. Bolduc still shows panic in his game that needs to change. Surprised Wahlstrom still not waived. Don't get the love, its almost like MDC, wait he will come around and never does
Looks like they are seeing if Wally can reshape his game into a 3rd/4th line grinder type with some offense.

That would involve him having some form of awareness out there. His awareness is about as good as the PK last year outside of the SHGs Holmstrom scored.

100% agree.

Engvall's effort/toughness warranted this move a while ago, but to admit that Lou is wrong (4 years in adavnce) is the most surprising thing by far.

Wally was always a physical player. He didn’t shy away from contact.
The problem is he doesn’t have the defensive awareness and agility that someone like Clutterbuck had.

Sounds like Lamoriello viewed Engvall as the third cog of a second line (aka a top six player by definition) and was willing to live with him shying away from contact in that role.

I'm going to assume Engvall passes and he goes to Bridgeport. What impact does that have on our cap space? Is he just a non factor now because he's not in the NHL? Or do we still have to carry his hit?

Engvall in the NHL = $3 million cap hit.

Engvall in the AHL = $1.85 million cap hit PLUS
Gauthier in the NHL = $787,500 cap hit
So, Engvall + Gauthier = $2.6375 million cap hit.

So there was really no reason to keep Engvall in the NHL to be a 4th liner. Waiving him enabled the Isles to be cap-compliant, and Wahlstom/Gauthier provide more physicality on the 4th line.

The difference now may be that he’s been told to play a certain way to remain the NHL, ie a bottom six roll vs a top six one.

Also, the Isles needed speed at the time he was acquired and he played well with Nelson. Lou may have looked at that and saw a possible solution there.

He’s clueless on how to make space or find the open space. Brett Hull wasn’t the fleetest of foot, but knew where to go.

They're the 12th and 13th forwards, and they play with 2 guys who do. All the options have holes in their games (for $1m or less there are going to be holes). Roy and Lou apparently think they'll be better fits than the other options.
