For any organization, after back-to-back years where the team still couldn't manage to get out of the division despite all the moves & signings the GM made, giving him a broader role or promotion wouldn't even be seriously considered.
But this is alternate universe of MLSE, where I'd honestly be shocked if Shanahan departs Treliving isn't given his job, at least in some capacity.
In fact, despite my comments the other day expecting Shanahan's departure - I still think it's highly likely, they have to sacrifice someone to appease the fanbase - I would not be surprised to see him return.
Though more likely his role will not involve over-seeing the on-ice product but the business side (which I'm certain MLSE is very pleased with where they are under him), yet still entirely possible he keeps his entire portfolio (Yeah, I cringed when I wrote "portfolio", almost like I've turned into a corporate creature just watching this corporation disguised as a hockey team play).
Shanny back, impossible you say? Pelley told us last spring his mandate was "just win" blah-blah-blah then 2 months later the Leafs were bounced in the first round and Shanahan still had a job. Point being, with MLSE never, ever, ever bet against them running it back.
